Yeah, I sort of think I've figured out what's going here, and his stuff is critical. When he said "as a non-servered man..." in the way that he did (and I think he meant it, and that it's true) something clicked.

I'm happy to be pulled along for the ride with this show, but the one thing I've been wondering about is the whole business with the numbers. It's obviously very important (all this "Cold Harbour" talk). I'm guessing that *only* severed people can do it, and Mark is about to discover that.

I suspect you're right about the last part, but not necessarily because it's a valuable activity in and of itself, but because Mark represents an ideal test case for something and his performance in that task demonstrates something about him that they're very interested in confirming.

He has the countenance of a man taking care of children with the innies, which to me makes me think he pities them for some reason. He doesn't objectify them like other people in charge, but also doesn't necessarily respect them as adult human beings.

This was part of why I did not like season 1 very much. Cobel almost makes for too tropey and fallible of a touch point for an antagonist organization whose strengths are either leaning into eldritch horror or faceless corporatism. But Cobel like gets mad and kicks your dog. It's a bad fit.
