A male humpback whale set a record by swimming more than 8,000 miles from South America to Africa and traversing at least three oceans — most likely in search of a mate, researchers said.

Or so you think it’s the record. They prolly been doing this since forever we only now just found out and we acting like it’s a discovery. Stoopid hubris humans.
Point taken Margaret.
As a NYT subscriber I would’ve happily gifted the article if I hadn’t already blown thru the paper’s stingy 10 articles per month limit in the first few days of December.😾
Reminds me of something I heard long ago. “If all the girls lived across the sea, what a good swimmer you would be.” Must be the whale heard it too & got the hint.
That is just sad. People suck because you just know that the reason he couldn't find a mate is due to the fact we are killing the planet that sustains us.
Most recent surveys actually indicate the opposite, they have been recovering, BUT food scarcity due to climate shift could be an issue. Maybe this male went in search of a population with less males (too much competition) or better food abundance to support more offspring?
Terrified by the prospect of a whale species quickly going extinct that has been around for 800,000yrs+ for a reason that probably doesn’t involve hunting?
I’m not terrified by it on a daily basis, but the thought of it isn’t very pleasant.
It's also not true. Population got down to about 6000 in the 1960s, and it's now above 135000. They are not an endangered species, although other cetacean species are.
Yep. Whaling began to peter out in the 60s - it didn't get banned in Australia until 1979,and I have dim memories of visiting the station at Albany as a toddler. Now, whaling is abhorrent and I'm all for a global ban, but humpback numbers are rising not in decline. We don't need to make shit up.
I doubt that'll be an issue for him. Given humpbacks' non consensual and non monogamous tendencies, on top of how the study suggested climate change played a role. the paper also considers that population growth a possible factor, ya know from where we hunter 95% of them to extinction.
Fact: Trump magazine cover, people don't realize they have the power; don't worry; the dark web has spoken, banning or not buying any time magazine covers; it will solve everyone's problem.

And I would walk five hundred more
Just to be the man who walked a thousand
Miles to fall down at your door 🎶
Is the record for the whale or for our observational ability?
Still a nice little story.
Why are you so miserable?
Who hurt you?
And point me toward tomorrow
We did what we had to do
Won't forget, can't regret
What I did for love
And I would swim 500 more
Just to be the man who swims a thousand miles
To fall down at your door.
"Humpback? Sperm? Oh, come on now!"
Funny how that’s not the headline you go with.

(and at what speed) that potential
mate had to swim to evade him.
Ignore our opinion page as it acts as the PR department for UnitedHealth.
And completely ignoring other important factors.
Can't wait for the follow-up article about how he drowns a newborn calf to mate with it's mother nonconsensually.
Get laid.
Fascinating how they use the fin markings as sort of a fingerprint to identify the whales.
Ps, I know the natural pattern of whales before any nature buffs correct me 🙄🤷♂️🖕😂🫶✌️🙏
I’m not terrified by it on a daily basis, but the thought of it isn’t very pleasant.
And I would swim 8,000 more
Just to be the whale who swam 16,000 miles
....To find a mate
😂🙃🤷🏻♀️
