another woman is dead because doctors refused to give her standard medical care AFTER SHE ALREADY MISCARRIED. abortion bans are killing women even if they don’t need one. porsha ngumezi should be alive.

“Less definitive from a legal perspective” is an absolutely ghoulish phrase on which to condition to the provision of life-saving medical care. The people responsible for this are fucking monsters.
This is typical—OBs generally don’t want to see you til 13 weeks and most miscarriages happen before that. I had two miscarriages at 13 weeks, fortunately at home w/o incident. But unless you have existing OBGYN relationship, you are at
at the mercy of whatever doctor in ER/urgent care you can find.
But now in places where ER docs will be afraid to intervene, not having an existing doctor relationship takes away possibility of your doctor giving a shit about you enough to risk intervening.
right, i’m just clarifying this would be highly unlikely to happen in a state without an abortion ban. in new york you see the doctor multiple times in the first trimester.
No. In pregnancy practice in general. I’m talking about New York in the 90s but my friends of different ages and places confirm. I always thought it was because OBs don’t want to get involved until you’ve passed the common miscarriage window.
This is sick. What is WRONG with this country!!??We should ALL be ashamed !!! There’s Blood on ALL your hands that support this. Pro LIFE!!?? BS! She DIED! 😤😡🤬🥺
they moved her out of the emergency room when she was passing blood clots the size of grapefruits. i can’t. i fucking can’t. women in states with abortion bans are not treated like humans.
I’ve already told my wife (who is 6 months pregnant) that if that happens to us here in Ohio. We are driving to a blue state straight from the emergency room. Michigan and PA are less than 1.5 hours away
Wishing you and your family all the best, with an uncomplicated pregnancy and delivery and a healthy baby. It must be more than usually terrifying to be pregnant right now, and anyone with a brain is at least a little scared during pregnancy.
It’s good that you’re close to states with protections. This poor woman was in Houston, meaning that every nearby neighbor state also has abortion bans. The closest state she might have been able to get help is Kansas, which is still hundreds of miles away. Absolutely horrible.
Where the fuck are the lawyers and millionaires who will now take these cases to specific courts so they can end up at scouts and force a reversal…oh right. We don’t have those options now the way magats do. Why? Because Dems are ball bags. That’s why.
And then the anti-abortion crowd call us pro-choicers "baby killers". Methinks they should take a lesson from their holy book and remove the entire logging truck's worth of beams from their own eyes first. Us 💙 just want to ensure every kid is a wanted kid who isn't living in poverty.
I suspect it's no coincidence that two out of the three deaths (that we know of so far) were women of colour. All three wanted their babies, and two had other young children who lost their mothers because of GOP fuckery.
I'm not at all sympathetic. They chose to go into a profession that puts people's lives in their hands. Sometimes that means they are going to be called upon to do something heroic, and heroic actions are never without risk. They let her die because they were worried about their own skins.
I used to be sympathetic but I am coming to your view. The doctors (and hospitals' legal teams) have to start having some guts and take care of their patients.
Fuck Texas!
Fuck there stupid ass inability to help women in need, I hate these people! I am moving out of here as soon as my daughter graduates bc it is too risky to stay here
One story is a tragedy, but doesn’t tell much about relationships between the law, miscarriage outcomes, & abortion. It raises questions. How many successful miscarriages are there, medical or surgical? what was different here? Were insurance protocols a factor? How busy was the ER? More info please.
These bans always baffle me. Doctors take a Hippocratic Oath to follow a system of regimen which, according to their ability and judgment, benefit their patients. Denying or delaying care is not helpful to a patient when it results in the patient’s death.
Refused isnt the right word. Both the pharmaceutical option and d&c procedure are consider abortions. The doctor chose not to deviate from the standard operating procedure either out of incompetence or negligence and has zero to do with an abortion ban.
This is so upsetting we will have to create posters with women that have died along with pictures of women that can no longer have children and march just like families that march for gun safety because at the end of the day pro life really means you don’t care who you kill
It would seem thar Doctors are terrified of being prosecuted for assisting an abortion when the fact has already happened. The crunch will come when it's one of the Orange Ape's cabal.
And women voted for this - remember that. In the words of the Jam - “you’ve made your bed you’d better lie in it/you choose your leaders and place your trust”
Physicians are struggling with these barriers and frustrated that their hands are tied. A more accurate description would be “another woman is dead because of the abortion ban which prevented doctors from providing life saving medical care.”
I agree the abortion ban is killing women. I think using the word “refuse” is not fair to the physicians caught in the middle of this. They are at risk of being prosecuted if they provide this medical care. I see so many headings inferring the blame on physicians and not the politicians.
These poor families. They should all start suing Texas for vast volumes of money. Won't bring their loved ones back, but will publicly highlight and embarrass those dolts.
I hate to be so direct but I think the time has come to stop pulling punches with these racist Nazis on the right. It doesn't matter how many times you post her name and circumstance, they don't care about her, she's black. Take the country back, 2028
I don't understand why there cannot be a class action against the doctors for malpractice...and the same for the insurance companies more importantly...the bans could get very costly for them...and we all know cost outranks religion
This could have been me. I should not have privilege because they laws recognized my right to medical care and the doctor who sprung into action to help me. This breaks my heart.
This is just heartbreaking. I'm angry crying. Beyond the inhumanity of the law, that doctor created a false medical record. At the very least, he should have his medical license revoked.
Honestly, sue doctors and hospitals for not giving standard care. That is malpractice. Make the courts decide whether trying to avoid possible prosecution is a defense to malpractice.
They deny that it's connected, because they apply hindsight to the process. They think that, since by the end it was clear that the procedure wasn't an abortion, that it was equally clear when the decision to wait was made. But the sac could've been a nearly complete miscarriage or a 5w pregnancy.
The Supreme Court and all those responsible for that law will have to stand before God and give Account!! They will be judged for trying to play God!! RIP My Dear Sister !
They’re not pro life. They’re pro pregnancy. They want to eliminate the programs that actually help people. They only care until children are born. Then, they pat themselves on the back and throw up their hands and say not my problem anymore. It’s so disgusting and dishonest.
I think the right is okay with women dying because they believe they’re saving more babies. They’re lives being born into a world without a mother is not the concern.
It doesn't matter to these people how many women die due to abortion bans because in their minds, if you're a woman and you fail to give birth for any reason, you don't deserve to live.
White evangelical women voted for these deaths, just like white evangelical men always vote for the continuation of school shootings. It's going to get worse. Mark my words.
My condolences for this tragic event that should never have occurred. I feel we have gone back in time, how much further back we go to the dark ages is very worrisome.
This was a year and a half ago. MD handling case used misoprostol which was standard procesdure at Houston Methodist Hospital at time. D&C's allowed in Texas with miscarraiges, but was determined not to be needed. Obviously a bad call by MD and not fault of TX abortion law that I too disagree with.
Listen, I live in Texas and disagree with abortion law here. Not because it bans life saving care, because it does not, but because it disallows abortions to healthy mothers and fetus' prior to point of viability outside the womb. And ProPublica is an oppiniated rag. #FactsMatter just not to them.
Absolutely unacceptable. America your medical laws are a mess. If there is no fetal heartbeat the baby has died and there is a risk of bleeding. A D&C is necessary and it is not an abortion! I am glad I live in a civilized country.
We aren't, the issue of the, "it won't happen to me," is strong!
Look at all the gerrymandering the state got away with, when rural predominant white communities have more power than some towns, it is obvious.
They are literally trying to buy religion into schools. $60 per child, Christian only.
I feel doctors need to stand up for patients and stop being so afraid of politicians that they violate their Hippocratic Oath. Yeah they might end up in court, even jail. Better that than a woman losing her life due to their inaction.
Yall should be blaming those who wrongly use abortion then 🤦🏿♂️.. if they didn’t over use it and only used it for the women who had miscarriages maybe they wouldn’t have banned it
This could have been me if I lived in Texas. My very wanted child miscarried at two months. After I started hemorrhaging and required an emergency D & C to save my life. Luckily, I live in WA state and was at a teaching hospital so four med students observed and learned.
These draconian states with their strict abortion laws, do not seem to comprehend that a miscarriage means that fetus is no longer viable and sometimes a D&C is needed to safely complete the miscarriage. Calling a D&C an abortion is just plain wrong.
And they claim to be pro life!! They’re killing people and the right is too stupid to recognize this! I worked as a nurse in a Catholic hospital and we did D&C’s when necessary and never heard anything like you do in these Red States! Ignorant people following a false god!
This is murder. There was no reason they could not do a D&C. The party of family values is perfectly fine with children losing their mother for no reason.
You know that anybody can sue them and tell it was an abortion that they covered it up and they will have to spent years and $ in court to prove it is not true?
Exactly. Pregnancy and childbirth can go sideways in an instant and Drs don't always have the luxury of time to play "Mother May I" several hours later with some board.
I speak from personal experience here. During my own pregnancy, at the very end I developed pre eclampsia and after a stressful fetal NST ended up on bedrest.
Then, at the end of labor when she was crowning, baby's heart rate started dropping. Her cord was too short.
She needed a bit of supplemental oxygen once born to pink up and cry but the 2 minutes in between were pure terror. She's in college now, thriving and brilliant but now it's her generation going to be most affected by all this.
First of all, prayers for the family. This is going to continue to happen as long as Texas keep voting as.....e in office like Assh...abbott, the assh...e like just voted in again as senator sh..tho..e cruz. God is not happy!!!
This breaks my heart. In 2004, while in Spain, a predominantly Catholic country, I had a miscarriage at 12-13 weeks. My family was devastated. I was bleeding profusely.
Do you know what doctors in Spain did? They rushed me in for a D&C. I discharged myself that evening so I could mourn with family
This is insane, women are being left to die because of men and their obsession with controlling our bodies, our reproductive autonomy - how could a dr stand by and just watch her life slip away?
I do struggle with this Republican concept that a D&C is an abortion when the fetus is already dead. Why deny care for the woman in that scenario? The only explanation is controlling all aspects of the woman related to her uterus, vagina & ovaries. We have ceased to matter outside of reproduction.
Getting people to ask aloud why abortion wasn't acceptable in "that scenario" is another way to control the narrative on controlling out bodies. Abortion is healthcare, in any scenario. #abortion #normalizeabortion
I am in complete agreement. And I work in healthcare and have had to have a D&C so am well aware that it is a medical procedure. I was just trying to understand the Republican “logic” in denying this care when the fetus is obviously not viable. That’s all.
the people making these laws aren't normal people, they're deranged
there is no logic
and it's a good question, i've asked many times. they're disturbed men and women who want to control women. Who see women dying via childbirth as some kind of religious b.s.
The procedure is the same.
The issue is the Dr can't neccesarily prove the fetus was dead, so any abortion cab be investigated and the Dr can have a civil lawsuit filed against them.
The procedure is identical regardless if the fetus is alive or not.
also they passed another law that any doctor who is found to have assisted/performed an abortion is liable up to $100,000 and 99 years in prison.
and they can just make up that they had because *they* don’t think it’s ever necessary.
doctor’s hands are tied at this point. it sucks ass
because a D&C is an abortion. an abortion is a medical procedure, point blank period. denying what it is only helps “pro-life” fascists keep control over our bodies.
Yup. I miscarried in my second trimester and had to be induced to remove my son. That is still considered an abortion. I really.... REALLY wish people would realize that abortions aren't just for unwanted pregnancies. This shit is dangerous and I don't understand how they don't care.
Terrifying & infuriating. My youngest daughter had retained placenta after her 1st child was born in June. She was hemorrhaging. It's likely to be a repeat experience if she has another child. I'm terrified for her and now hope she doesn't try for another baby. What a horrible time for this country.
but Trump won the presidency and republicans won a big majority in the senate and kept the house, because voters thought eggs are more important than women. elections have consequences. people will think about it when prices for eggs go up anyway.
You were warned long ago. Don't expect the mainstream media to save you. The mainstream media failed democracy long ago. Read: Breaking: Bad: The Hypocrisy of the Mainstream Media and How it Elected Donald Trump https://a.co/d/5F4AERL
This is so fucked up. Black women are three times as likely to die from pregnancy complications than white women. That number will go up even further with this abortion ban shit. This shouldn’t have happened. Her children are motherless now because of a doctor neglecting their patient.
The maternal death rate has skyrocketed for all demographics, including white women. The last I saw, Texas's white women had a maternal death rate of 39/100k, which is approximately 1/2500. By contrast, in most of Western Europe, it's about five times that at 1/12k.
I want to know if there is ONE doctor, just ONE, who will put it all on the line for the profession, the patient, their own conscience & treat these women. They don't even report this. I believe they really don't care what happens to their patients. What a sad state of affairs for Texas women.
Women are dying because they are not considered in the equation regarding “fetal heartbeat” and until the compassionate, thinking world wakes up to that..women will be slaughtered for the hate of them, by those with less than moral intent and a hellbent obsession to force national religion on us all
I appreciate your feedback and I stopped calling him that, once it was brought to my attention by another. It was never my attention to hurt the trans community. I now call him slug in posts after the one you commented on.
He has like 12 kids by at least 3 women, I think he's trying to exceed Nick Cannon, both in the # department and the weirdass names department (guessing his ex wife is the reason the older kids have traditional names with common spellings)
Why did white women vote to keep this going? And why not enough young women bothered. I'm old & have been fighting for women's rights, human rights my whole frickin life. What the hell? I just don't get it. The most shocked people you'll find out there are my tribe: older women like myself. 🙄
But what about all the other white women? Seriously, I'm at a loss. They're okay with this threat hanging over their daughters? And where were the daughters? I'm very dismayed by those who voted for him directly and by default by not bothering to vote. Apathy, nihilism, racism, sexism among women.
There are a lot of conservative white women out there. They cling to power, to their conservative husbands, fathers, pastors - and are convinced an exception will be made for them if they need it.
On the subject of those who didn't vote - I'm at a loss.
Good luck to you! I mean that. Thanks for caring. I'll be passing the torch to women like you. My grandmother was in the labor movement. Black listed by Joe McCarthy. This is a long long fight. Glad to have you aboard!
Let’s not blame the doctors. This is 100% on the republicans party and Trump. This woman died because politicians who know almost nothing about women’s bodies and anatomy put bans in place instead of trusting women and doctors.

at the mercy of whatever doctor in ER/urgent care you can find.
don't wait. her life could depend on it
they'd need the national guard
it's russian roulette in TX
why are we not constructing and advancing 1000's of cases through the courts
constant pressure
some will make it to scotus. overwhelm them
expose them
it's the only road
we're half the population
why are we not boycotting, organizing?
Shame on the Republicans!
But, in the short term, suing doctors for malpractice in these situations is critical to protect patients.
You need to make doctors fear a lawsuit more than a (very unlikely) prosecution.
the trials would be front page news daily
Why should they sacrifice their families because Texans keep electing idiots?
Fuck there stupid ass inability to help women in need, I hate these people! I am moving out of here as soon as my daughter graduates bc it is too risky to stay here
Catholic and other religious people are saying they are saving the lives of the unborn by not supporting women and girls in need help.
How they will feel when it’s one of their own?
I just don’t believe it’s God’s will.
It’s all so sad and hurtful. I don’t understand their thinking.
WHY??????
This should NEVER happen!!!
Fuck the lying 6 shitbags on the bench of the Supreme Court. They will reap what they sow.
Women are going to pay the price.
Anybody really think talking about is going to fix anything?
20% of pregnancies are aborted by God. They are called MISCARRIAGES.
Look at all the gerrymandering the state got away with, when rural predominant white communities have more power than some towns, it is obvious.
They are literally trying to buy religion into schools. $60 per child, Christian only.
We do multiple things, and we know changes don't happen over night but it is a struggle many of us continue!
Among other actions, perhaps we should start talking about wrongful death suits.
the lawmakers
anyone and everyone
sue for emotional distress
anything
Then, at the end of labor when she was crowning, baby's heart rate started dropping. Her cord was too short.
It’s the legislators in Austin who are responsible for murdering her.
been saying it for 40 years
it's finally coming home to roost. maybe people will wake up
Do you know what doctors in Spain did? They rushed me in for a D&C. I discharged myself that evening so I could mourn with family
The Texas Ob-Gyn Exodus makes it look like things are about to get a lot worse..

again. nuts
if even 1/4 of young women did this it would open eyes
get a vibrator
not a man who thinks you're an incubator

i'm a white woman by the way who wouldn't vote for Trump in any circumstance

People have been taught lies many their entire lives about abortion
it's brain washing which opens you up to all other kinds of brainwashing
Dead Women don’t vote.
