i get pretty tired of hearing men complain about these aspects of video games. But i dunno, I also tend to avoid places where they're congregating. (as evidenced by seeing your posts)
a lot of straight men aren't happy. So they complain about everything.
I haven't been offended by playing as a female character in video games since playing as Samus in Metroid, and I'm not about to start now. Don't like female leads? Don't play video games.
This seems like twitter/x anger bait bot engagement content.
Please keep this junk out. If you have a problem with a whole group of people based on sexual preference and gender, please go get therapy and stop spreading hate.
Definitely rather look at a woman. And feel even more powerful being a woman whipping ass in the game. And sometimes smaller hit boxes. Also makes me feel like an ally even if i never leave the house?
I'm straight & my favorite character is female Captain Shepard in Mass Effect. Jennifer Hale voices her perfectly & it's a legit badass portrayal that makes the male version come off to me as a whiny asshole by comparison. I love a good, strong female lead in a story that isn't a stereotype.
For what it's worth I don't think a single straight man who has had the opportunity to directly test their straightness "in the field" as it were has ever done this
I find it strange as well. I’ve never played a game and felt an immersion break because of a female character in the game. I don’t understand that thought process at all. I could understand not liking a particular character, but just hating women characters in general is some weirdo incel shit.
Straight MEN don't care. We grew up playing Tomb Raider, wrecking shop with Chun Li and were pissed Heavenly Sword didn't get a sequel. I think what you're referring to are frothy mouthed incels who aren't smart enough to be manipulative narcissists, so they just fall back to pass-aggro misogyny.
Straight men don't get angry about female leads in movies and video games, they like everyone else gets angry for pandering. If the female lead makes sense and has good character development, no one cares. But why make a character female just to try and pander to diversity? It ruins the game
I remember playing a lot of Korean multiplayer games in the early 2000's and most of the time it seemed no one wanted to play a male character because if you are straight why would you want to stare at a dude's ass for hours at a time.
Maybe they're afraid to empathize with or relate to a female because their whole identity would shatter? Or they're worried people might think they want to be a woman since they're playing a game as one.
My fav character is Lara Croft, currently playing Last of Us 2. Both are strong characters in a worlds where genders don’t matter. Played the Uncharteds and prefer to play Drake than Chloe. This seems like the same scenario of all gamers could be murders imo
It's not straight men, it's incels. Most straight men I know have no problem with female characters. We may like them for horny reasons, but only incels hate them.
I’m a straight man. I remember as a kid one of the biggest reasons I wanted to play Metroid was because Samus is a woman. Not in a weird or creepy way, but just because I thought it was cool, and I hadn’t played a game with a female protagonist before. I don’t get why it’s “emasculating” to some.
I don’t get it either. When given a choice in character creation, my husband will almost always make a female character. He says if he’s going to watch the back of a character in a game, he’d rather it be attractive to him lol.
Oh, they do love playable female characters. Just look at gacha games. It's fine when the girls are collectables to ogle at like objects. What they hate are female characters who are people with well-developed personalities and practical dress sense. It defies their misogynistic beliefs.
I had to play as Isaac Clarke all through Dead Space. I dealt with it for a good story. So these manbabies can just choke the fuck up on the bat and deal with it.
I’m a straight man, white, in my 30s. It never ever occurred to me that playing a female character was anything different than playing a male one. For god sake I grew up playing hedgehogs and dragons… How close minded can you even be before melting
Yeah about Tomb Raider the only discourse I remember was about her sexualisation, mostly in a positive way, debating on what was objectification and what was empowering (maybe not in those terms).
But no one was talking about having a hard time identifying with her at the time. No one.
I disagree, I can only play as a female character if I find myself sexually attracted to them, which is why I've exclusively played Mrs Pacman since 1994
And it's always nice to have an attractive behind to stare at as your character runs around - cuz that is what is going to be directly in front of you the entire game.
I probably have a few thousand hours in as Lara Croft, playing Tomb Raider. those guys are complete assholes & get mad as well when mom’s tardy bringing their Uber eats order to the basement …
Many of them probably protest about it but secretly enjoy it. The protesting is possibly just for show, so their friends say "Nah, he can't be... he hates women video game characters..."
Meanwhile he's in the bathroom at Sanctuary Hills, doing his hair and makeup in the mirror
I don't think the issue is as prevalent as the online weirdos make it seem. I have a lot of male friends who exclusively play female characters when given a chance.
The crowd that whine about this probably wouldn't play the games they complain about anyway if it's not a bog-standard idiot shooter.
i don't usually care about picking characters of any gender since it doesn't affect the gameplay, but i mean
who doesn't love cool, lovely looking characters, am i wrong>?
This is really a non issue. There are a handful of tools out there that post stupid opinions and they don’t come close to representing the actual demographic.
I don't know, but it's weird. I feel very awkward playing a female character. Intellectually I know it's ridiculous. I guess as a bloke of a certain age I was socialized into a way of being before I had much of a say in it.
Nah. I’m in my 50s, been married for 22 years with 2 kids. I always play as a woman if the character exists. It don’t think it has anything to do with your age or socialization.
Wait what? Was the horizon zero dawn series not a blockbuster hit? Is fem Sheppard not a thing anymore? Don't mistake internet incels who probably don't even know how to game for being gamers.
Because the manipulation there doesn't result in telling them they're the best thing in the world while the female hands him a sandwich and spreads her legs
I just realized, other than fully customizable characters, I've never played a game with a Black female protagonist. In fact Viviene from DA is the only person that comes to mind...
I've only played 4 games with a black woman protag; "Remember Me", "Dandara", and "Forspoken", and "Resident Evil 5", and that last one only half counts as she shares playable protag role with a white man, and isn't even playable until new game+
No like seriously, POC are regularly left out in the cold as far as representation and if someone brings that up they'll be like "nuh uh look here" and it's some fantasy race with darker skin...like bitch...
They think it makes them less of a man and/or gay to experience a story as a woman character. Almost like its something to be ashamed of, especially with how other men would treat your character. Worse yet- it means no male-perspective sex scenes. Weird huh?
I’m mad for female playable characters and will always choose the female option in character creation if given the choice. The whole Witcher 4-Ciri thing is just professional online rage producers manufacturing a nontroversy because that’s just their job.
i love female characters in games imo - there should be more representation. Who cares what ppl think if they wanna be shallow. I'm keen for The Witcher 4 - but I should probably play TW2 & TW3 😅
I enjoy playing female characters because I get to look at their butts while they’re disemboweling some big ugly dude.
Also I watched Xena for like 10 years straight.
I’ve always thought it was either they were closeted or that seeing nothing but old retvrn memes gave them an incomprehensibly high standard of a woman that doesn’t and never did exist to begin with
They’re never mad about conventionally attractive female PC’s. They got mad when they perceived that devs like Naughty Dog were purposefully putting “ugly” (read: normal looking) women as protagonists in their games. A lot of it was sparked by TLOU part II.
I'm a straight man, and I dont mind female playable characters at all. It all depends on if the characters are done well or not. A lot of guys complain about Ellie from Last of Us being a lesbian, but as a straight man, I find that relatable.
I personally don't play as a woman in games where you customize your character but that doesn't stop me from wanting Lydia fighting by my side in Skyrim or reacting to Lady Dimitrescu the same way every "based" man did when REVIII came out (I have mommy issues).
Straight men live in terror of doing ANYTHING that might be construed as gay, and what else would you be if you played anything other than a manly definitely into the ladies man
Straight male. I make characters that look like my wife because I'd much rather be looking at her for my 1000+ hours in Monster Hunter World than a random dude's ass.
As a straight man I must confess, I am always mad about female playable characters, because when I submerse in a game and character they always make me feel pretty, and badass, and I am mad that I'm not brave enough to go feel pretty and badass by myself irl.
woah hey please don’t rope me into this (straight man) that being said it is embarrassing seeing these dumbass “culture warrior” types arguing about whether or not a woman in a video game is hot enough to earn their respect
Funny. Most straight men that game actually liked games like the original tomb raider and Stellar Blade. Beyond Good and Evil. Alien Isolation. Mirrors Edge. Resident Evil I could keep going. It is all about how those female are betrayed in game.
They don't like not being the center of attention. Games with "ugly" women, lesbian relationships, and feminist messages are seen as hostile to them cause they realize the power isn't in their hands as much as before.
"To the privileged, equality feels like oppression"
What gets me is how they melt down so incandescently over a female character not being fuckable enough and it's just like...did you have to be sexually attracted to Crash Bandicoot to be able to play that game, too?
More seriously? Probably because they've lived their whole lives being told to be scared of doing "girly things", and "playing as a girl" is pretty high on that list.
Many video games do kind of heavily lean into the player "being" the player character, not just watching and guiding.
And in general I think intuitively if you control something like that, you end up inhabiting it too, which if you're (unjustifiably) scared of appearing not masculine enough, of doing things that don't conform, is something that does cause anxiety.
As a sidenote. Using the label "straight men" here definitely has set some people off. Probably because they identify as a "straight man", and hold that as an important part for their identity.
Not saying this is a wrong statement, just saying that's why people are set off.
Aloy (Horizon series), Jesse Faden (Control) and Selene (Returnal) are my favourite game protagonists in that order. And that's because they're strong well written characters.
Tomb Raider, Stellar Blade, Nier Automata, Street Fighter, Metroid, Resident Evil3, Alien Isolation, Celeste, Beyond Good and Evil, Control, Parasite Eve, and countless others would like a word with you.
I’m a straight male and I just bought the Tomb Raider Remastered Collection for the Switch. Earlier this year I played and beat a wonderful game called The Legend of Zelda Echoes of Wisdom. I really don’t understand what the problem is with female main characters.
I forgot that I absolutely loved the Princess Peach Showtime game. That game was the epitome of a fun game. And I really enjoyed collecting the different dresses.
because to them women are supposed to be either eye candy or something they can exploit, old school Lara Croft would've given them aneurysms. So would Jill Valentine. (Yeah Jill needs help here and there but she's part of a team, that's expected.)
Game developers can't even wright a good male character most of the time. The gamer boys are trying to give them a handicap by keeping them away from trying to write a woman, let alone a MC
We can't treat issues that aren't the same as if they are. As this issue is caused by societal attitudes and upbringing this can happen to any straight man thus it's a straight man problem.
Until a few years ago it felt as if some women were the ones getting mad at female playable characters though. Now the big difference is that grifters are not evangelists nor activists but youtubers.
I genuinely do not care about the gender of a character. But if the writers need to keep pointing out “Strong independent [insert gender]• i’m gonna get annoyed at least.

😂
One of the developers prom Eidos said it best referring to the original Tomb Raider.
“If you’re going to be looking at someone’s bum while playing, it should be a pretty girl”
Men and pandering
They're infantile parrots.
+10 points
bros really out here complaining about enjoying the sight of a fine honey's ass while doing awesome stunts and shit in a game with em.
some absolute hoeless behavior.
1. Laura Croft
2. My D2 warlock
3. 2B
4. Ms. Pac Man
5. Samus Aran
And it probably seems like more than there actually are because the ones that do whine so fucking much/so loudly about it.
He did the puzzles, I did the boss fights.
Can't recall female characters being remotely controversial back then.
What the chuds want back is the 90s, 00s, gamer magazine ,lad culture, from when they were 14.
1/2
If you check Steam , etc, there's an absolute ton of racy , lewd , hentai games , and games that are basically just interactive porn.
The options are there for them , I know they've looked
But no one was talking about having a hard time identifying with her at the time. No one.
Still.. why don't men in games look like this anymore?
Game developers “we need to attract more women to games”.
Jenkins “I’ve got it!! Let’s just make pac man and put a bow on him! And call it Mrs Pac-Man!”
Devs “what’s gonna be different?”
Jenkins “the bow. That is all!”
Devs “get this man a raise!!!”
AC Valhalla allows random choice between male/female
I take a chance and it chooses female
I don’t mind at all
I’ve played as a female Eivor everytime and it makes perfect sense.
I’ve never ever played as the male Eivor
Meanwhile he's in the bathroom at Sanctuary Hills, doing his hair and makeup in the mirror
Ah, okay, that's fine then.
The crowd that whine about this probably wouldn't play the games they complain about anyway if it's not a bog-standard idiot shooter.
who doesn't love cool, lovely looking characters, am i wrong>?
They're absolutely missing out.
This nonsense looks like a fb post.
If that's the case, women should be far more upset about ONLY having male playable characters.
And black women gamers? Have we even had more than like 5 black women protags in gaming ever?
Subnautica: Below Zero
Assassin's Creed: Liberation
Half-Life: Alyx (VR title)
Dishonored: Death of the Outsider
All of them really fantastic titles.
Source: Am one. Not like them though.
There’s backlash when ppl are asking for human rights and there shouldn’t be when morons spew hateful crap because why bother?
Point. Out. Stupidity.
They somehow both want their cake and to fuck it too.
♥️ female characters like Shadowheart, Karlach, Minthara (BG3), Jessie Faden (CONTROL) & Ellie (TLOU:P2)
Also I watched Xena for like 10 years straight.
They literally fear us.
"To the privileged, equality feels like oppression"
And really worries me about Zoo sim game fans, too.
Many video games do kind of heavily lean into the player "being" the player character, not just watching and guiding.
Not saying this is a wrong statement, just saying that's why people are set off.
If said FPC is barely clad, in a skin tight / poured on outfit and/or with "jiggly" physics then said male gamers tend to be far less vocally opposed.
And then there's 9-foot tall #LadyDimetrescu. #YesMaam 😱🤣
If you feel attacked by this, that's a YOU issue, and you need to log off and figure that out 🤣
The post is wrong, and if you don't give af, you should. Nobody likes being generalized against.
Telling people to shut up because they're the exception is just kind of wrong.
I'm also not straight so idk.
