The free speech absolutists are just exercising the freedom of not using speech to address how they’re huge hypocrites that only seem to defend racist and nazi shit.
Libertarians don’t have anything to say about anything, because really all libertarianism stands for is people who want things for themselves and not for other people. It has always been bullshit. People who refer to themselves as Libertarians need to be ignored.
Most Libertarians went MAGA because the main objective was always just pissing off other people. Before Trump they pissed off most people a little bit, but as MAGA idiots they piss off >50% A LOT.
“Biden was worse. Harris would have been even worse than that” — something like how reason mag covered the election. Taking all the realizations of what the gop was planning on doing & then claiming the dems would be worse
Libertarians IMO have never really argued in good faith. Most are driven by a particular bit of government or regulation they dislike, but they won’t extend it to the bits that they do want
Come on, they are not Libertarians, they never were, they are Conservatives with Conservative policies under a freedom label because it looks more palatable.
Oh God it's so much worse 😭 I literally CRIED when I found out about him using Parler, being friends with Brandon Herrera, shoeonhead and founded the boogaloo boys
Reason magazine can drive me crazy but at least they aren't hypocrites IRT due process and the carceral state (compared to libertarian party types anyway.) Josh Barro is another writer in that general camp.
The stories are OK but the commenters and readers have obviously been trained by a quarter century of glibertarian bullshit to ignore disappeared foreigners and focus on "freedom means me first" content
100%, the comment threads are a cesspool that I am occasionally tempted to reason with, but there's a registration step that deters me enough to remember that arguing with ideologues is almost never worth the effort. As a teacher wanting to include some non-nutso perspectives from my right, OK.
I would rather not know what all the former 🚁 accounts were thinking about strangers they have no reason to care for getting snatched by plainclothes goon squads of questionable governmentality
In fairness, @ilyasomin.bsky.social has been outspoken in his criticisms of the current Administration, and consistent with his libertarian principles. I give him credit for that. And in some instances, so has @jadler1969.bsky.social.
Oh for sure, I loved CATO's recent breakdown of DOGE where they praised most of the cuts, hoped for further deep cuts to "entitlements" and only worried about the possibility that fed workers in charge of approving oil drilling rights may be impacted
My favorite part was near the end when they briefly mentioned "concerns" about the constitutionality of the executive branch denying funding passed by Congress, then shrug them off because spending cuts are good so who gives a fuck whether it's legal. The libertarian classic
The libertarians I know (old high school and college friends) are apparently very happy with Trump. Turns out they’re find with big government and censorship as long as it isn’t directed towards them.
I'm currently teaching Executing Freedom by Daniel Lachance, very good cultural history of the death penalty in the 20th century US,. It has lots to say about how right wing libertarians reason their way to supporting the carceral state. Came out ~10 yrs ago but I see the patterns everywhere now.
Right-libertarians! In the Cato institute vein. Believers in the power of markets, the evils of “regulation,” and the need to prevent the state from encroaching on our civil liberties
Institute for Justice? What have they said or done? My question is more about how their usual beat is related to the Trump Administration's actions rather than any disdain for IJ.
Reason is tonally quite odd right now - it feels as if the consequence* of labeling the ACA/social-security/etc as unimaginable tyranny is that disappearing activists off the street is renderable as a weather report level story. When everything's been state overreach forever, nothing really is...?
there's a fun group you can sometimes find of libertarians who are actually anarchists and just don't know it yet because 1. haven't read theory and/or 2. the word 'coercion' has become a monolith in their brain

They don’t give a shit
In other words, I feel it man.

virtually every libertarian I’ve ever known is a hard-core fascist Trump supporter. They’re all just fucking garbage.
