The most generous I could be would be a month or two after he bought Twitter, when the mainstream really started paying attention to how much he engages with Nazis
Nah. Calling that rescue worker for the collapsed Thai cave rescue a "pedo" in 2018 is the absolute latest cutoff point, the date beyond which we could all see the writing on the wall
I would go with 2018 when he called that diver a pedophile because his feelings were hurt that they wouldn't wait for him to MAKE a submarine, to save the kids in the cave. He's such an ass.
The cutoff is the Thai kids trapped in a cave / submarine debacle. He showed himself to be a dangerous idiot and an asshole. Don’t know how anybody bought a car from him after that.
Although I guess if you weren’t on Twitter at the time, you may have been unaware.
Even before he directly affiliated with MAGA, when people were saying “his politics are so mysterious..”
Like he did not try to overthrow an indigenously-led democratic socialist country to get their nationalized natural resources industry under his control
That seems around the time, but it is tricky. I bought a Nissan, and I don't even know who owns the company, much less their politics, so there is some wiggle room for people who didn't even think about Elon. But certainly no Cybertruck owner can make that claim.
If you still supported Musk after he famously tried to rush return to office before there was a COVID vaccine, you're a huge asshole in my book. And every revelation that followed about him as a person, and his politics, made it increasingly obvious that he's a selfish & dangerous person.
8 or 9 years ago my partner did soft informational interviews with Tesla employees before deciding whether to apply. She came away saying "I don't work for corporations masquerating as cults"
the cave rescue (2018) is the first five-alarm fire moment off the top of my head but with minimal research i could probably push it back further if i was feeling ungenerous
He was always a bit odd, but that's not the same thing as there is something really wrong with this guy. Calling the diver a pedophile was the time it was really obvious to me.
Same. That pushed me toward skepticism of full self-driving, then outright scorn of it … and then down a slope of disillusion, until his antics early in the covid pandemic made my disgust toward him total.
for me it was immediately after he started throwing around accusations of pedophilia at that one guy who rescued the children trapped in the cave, which was in 2018
supporting musk after that has always been a red flag for me
I don’t know when the cutoff is. All I know is I got mine in 2016 which grandfathers me in for free supercharging so I charge up as often as I can on his dime.
I just don't understand because Elon aside Tesla's have been consistently ranked at the bottom on reliability, particularly before Elon became so publicly horrible. They're just bad cars
Yes, and then he violated Covid restrictions in his Fremont auto plant (after years of making the news for labor violations) the Bay Area has the most teslas and the most exposure to how awful he’s been.
unrelated but did you know that some of the British cavers who were part of that rescue went on a victory lap of cave diving in American caves and one of their guys (Josh Bratchley) got lost and then improbably rescued by legendary cave diver Edd Sorenson?
My mom got one about 2 years ago, both my folks thought I was a total loon & conspiracy theorist when I was giving all the reasons they shouldn't. Then he started messing with the election & they realized I was telling them the truth.
Same. There was lots of concerning things before, I never liked him, but then I never knew him personally. But that was the first wtf is wrong with you moment
Ya. I didn’t really know him before then. Was more “eccentric smart guy,” which I suspect was where most were. But that moment was when he kinda revealed who he is.

It’s a pattern for him lol

It was getting to be clear then.

That we now know he was run out of earlier startups should have been part of due diligence. Good PR and the press it generated hid *a lot*.

Oh no.
At the least, that was the moment I went from, "eh, he's a bit odd, but he seems to be working for good" to "okay, maybe not"
