Agreed. And tbh Ariana grande didn’t need to go so hard on her remake of it! I just listened to it the other day and I was like damn she kinda did something here
The documentary was great! I'm really glad it showed how impt Andrew Ridgely was to Wham & to George Michael, as well. He wasn't just 'that other guy' doing nothing.
Yes they did - after they recorded Club Tropicana it was totally necessary - and don't forget to spell their name properly - with the exclamation point: WHAM!
If I remember correctly, he was "upset" that it didn't hit #1 because "Do They Know It's Christmas" by Band-Aid held that spot for weeks. Would've been Wham!'s third #1 hit in 84
Whaaaaat? It's the greatest White Man's Burden song ever created! 😂
(but seriously the Brit (and some American) star power was incredible! Duran Duran? Sting? Bono? Wham? Boy George? Phil Collins? Bowie's speech in the extended version? Wooooo)
I think Wham actually went pretty... soft on "Last Christmas." Like, it's fine but I wouldn't say "oh hold on bro lemme put on some wham to get this rave started"
Recently on my local radio, a claim was made that on the #LastChristmas track (radio edit), #GeorgeMichael is performing everything that you hear - the vocals, drum machine, synthesiser, and sleigh bells... Written and produced entirely by himself.
It's true. He knew enough about the keyboard to get the tune he wanted and laid down the percussion tracks. You should watch the Wham! Last Christmas documentary on Netflix.
Well, how would you feel if you had confessed a secret ("I gave you my heart") and that someone then blabbered it to everyone ("You gave it away") and then when you show up to the same party next year, they don't even remember you?
Yes, I have headcanon about this song. Ask if you dare. :-D
I know, right? George Michael's vocals are insane on that track. He's really belting out those emotions" Last Christmas' is already a bop, but Wham really brought the heat. That song is a masterclass in 80s pop perfection. 🥳
George Michael laced all his songs. That one about “AND NOW YOU TELL ME THAT YOURE HAVIN MY BAYBAY? ILL TELL YOU THAT IM HAPPY IF YOU WANT ME TEW” is such a banger
I couldn't stand Wham! But at the time I didn't know music would just die. Now it's kind of a good thing because it leaves something 'new' to listen to.
Agree. I’m not necessarily a fan of the music of Wham! But his voice on songs like A Different Corner and a cover of Queen’s Somebody to Love is exquisite. A great loss to popular music and a nice person.
Don’t worry, you are a good looking guy, and you’re cool, you’ll find someone else who truly appreciates you.
Oh oops so sorry, I thought this was a group therapy session… 😬😉😘
I respectfully disagree with you-I only heard this song while watching a doc on George Michael-It was immediately put on my Christmas play list-In fact I already posted it early on my Christmas song for the day posts- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8gmARGvPlI
One sequence of four chords - I-vi-ii-V - is introduced in the first chorus, and then the verse consists of... EXACTLY the same chords. It never changes. Ever. It's the sequence of the verse of Blue Moon, but that actually leads to something - a completely different sequence in the chorus. Shit
Exactly! You got this. That closeness, it’s not ‘just’! Rather it’s the very thing that makes it likely to outlast all modern Xmas songs. The superdense heart of a star: timeless & absolute; an ancient mode: Chiastic structure poetry. 💫
I’m not even joking; I’m GenX. We just crave strange beauty.
But the very next day, the “they” GAVE THEIR (Wham’s) HEART AWAY. At CHRISTMAS. Yes they absolutely had to go that hard. It’s a post break up glow up, bad bitch villain arc. Have you never been through a bad break up???
I kind of wish they hadn't. I can tolerate every version of that song EXCEPT Wham's, because Wham's version is too whiny. The others dial it back a bit.
I played it for my creative writing students and told them to write a story inspired by it. The catch was that the story couldn't be OBVIOUSLY inspired by the song. Chaos ensued. My favourite was one about zombies gifting each other various rotten organs.

"Doodoo Doo Doodoo Doo Doodoo - Woo! Woo!"
(Just that bit.)
How can I make the most of this situation you say? By doing the dance routine until I end up with the butt of the dude in the pale denim jeans.

I appreciate your suggestion and will totally spend my Christmas break binging ALL of their music videos, hiding in the dark & AC on full blast.
People wish they were me sometimes.
heavy sigh.
That man had a voice!
I cried.

It’s a ring structure. The rhymes are in the middle.
Last Xmas / Heart (no rhyme)
Next day / Away (rhyme!)
This year / Tears (rhyme!)
I’ll give it to someone special (no rhyme)
So the center of gravity is in the middle. Perfection
I’m not even joking; I’m GenX. We just crave strange beauty.
My two favorite Christmas songs
