Ann Telnaes, who has worked at The Washington Post as an editorial cartoonist since 2008, says her cartoon criticizing billions currying favor with Trump was spiked — and now she has quit the paper

Hey, that means there’s a position available at the WaPo! I hope they like cartoons of syphillitic Trump being reamed in the eye socket by Liberty wearing a barbed-wire-wrapped strap-on.
Taken from the CBC obit for Carter: " We've become now an oligarchy instead of a democracy. And I think that's been the worst damage to the basic moral and ethical standards of the American political system that I've ever seen in my life." 2015.
I so respect her decision 🥰 and her as a person. That cartoon was a tragically on point representation of the gutless sycophants that are running to bow down to a corrupt, immoral, felon who will do anything for power.
U have my sincere thank you & a hardy round of applause. There aren't nearly enough bravehearted people willing to forgo their livelihood in the name of social responsibility. We need examples like you DAILY if we hope to escape the victim mentality too many kids in adult bodies currently utilize.
I wish I could be surprised that these companies didn’t even have the balls during fair weather times to remain committed. On their knees before he’s even officially elected.
I love that cartoon, and I'm glad Ann gave the WP a big eff you. She can go independent, which many should do and leave legacy media alone because they're the enemy of the people.
It would be so easy to hurt the Washington Post, I know a lot of people did unsubscribe but I know there are a lot of holdouts, Jeff can keep it afloat with his own money but can’t we just have a backbone and really go for it?
She's right.
"That’s true [employee usually is supposed to be loyal to their employer] except we’re talking about news organizations that have public obligations and who are obliged to nurture a free press in a democracy."
This is another area where the free market kills democracy.
Also, she has a sound argument for keeping the faith on democracy.
"Owners of such press organizations are responsible for safeguarding that free press— and trying to get in the good graces of an autocrat-in-waiting will only result in undermining that free press."
Jeff Bezos disappoints again.
The New York Times thinks this is news. The Boston Globe thinks this is news. The Washington Post has not mentioned it. Her bio page there still says she "creates editorial cartoons for The Washington Post" with a long paragraph listing many awards.
… Cooper is a Vanderbilt. In fact, the last Vanderbilt (even wrote a book with that title). Now, by the time his mom was a little girl, most of the money was gone. But both she and her son got access to plenty of opportunities by virtue of their parentage.
He would have to really acknowledge that most of what he is comes from being a Vanderbilt, if a very reluctant one. I think he’s danced around it, but can’t quite embrace it.
I'd click but it's on Nazi-sympathizing Substack. Which, if you remember from last year's revelations, Substack GLADLY hosts and promotes Nazi newsletters. I feel for journalists, but moving to a platform that helps Trump-ilk from the top-down isn't going to stop fascism/oligarchs.
OK, I dropped after the withdrawal of the endorsement. But after a while, I resubscribed because they have great journalists and commenters. This tells me those smart people are no longer free to discuss. Sadly, I must move on.
The Guardian spiked an entire series covering gender and censored an article featuring Judith Butler because one of their top editors was married to a woman who founded an anti-LGBTQ hate site where homophobes and transphobes share tips on how best to abuse their kids into conformity.
I stepped back for November, went back in December because a journalist friend convinced me that there were other ways to hurt Bezos, but I think it’s time to say goodbye to the @washingtonpost.com
Hard to believe Bezos would've spiked a similar cartoon if it depicted, say, labor unions bowing and throwing bags of cash at the feet of a Democratic president.
Time to start supporting journalists' collectives. What is the most effective way now to support our best journalists? Handing $$ to Jeff Bezos, Rupert Murdoch and Patrick Soon-Shiong doesn't seem to be the way.
Good for her. I have lost all respect for WaPo (and the others) since they've become tools for the oligarchs. It's so sad for the institution of Woodward and Bernstein.
Really I think American Journalist should just for a Guild and look to going for a non corporate way to create news as it's literally the money making side which ruined news pulling the spines from especially print journalism
Ultra rich people want to believe they are special and think they deserve only adoration and praise. In actuality most of them got there either by luck, family wealth or exploiting others. One thing that really bothers them is being laughed at, especially by people they think are beneath them.

Well done.
See in his own words
These people revolt me as much as Trump himself.
This is terrible. 1A is really in trouble. The billionaires are bending both knees.

Which is ironic, given that it's exactly the behaviours and abuses that destroy free speech which should be being exposed.

I'm sure someone like Anderson Cooper would sooner jump out of his skin than acknowledge the oligarchy establishing itself further.
As a result? He’ll stay quiet as long as he can.
