Let’s remember that schools are business. They don’t give a damn about your education. They want money. How many of you have a college degree and have a job that doesn’t pay the bills. You’re made to believe you need this piece of paper because they want your money
Columbia negotiated with a dictator who is not going to suffer quaint little things like academic freedom…especially now that he knows the administrators will happily bend the knee.
Thank you for amplifying this news. For those of us working in higher education this feels embarrassing, scary, sad, extremely stupid and really important.
A member of our team has been arrested for having her name change on her Identification card. She is a trans woman and is on the men’s side of the facility were it’s dangerous
The most onerous demand is for "the university to place its Middle Eastern, South Asian and African Studies Department under 'academic receivership for a minimum of five years.'”
So that means Steven Miller gets to dictate the curriculum?
There’s a reason I’ve always put my trust in ordinary people and never in neoliberal institutions who would readily look out for their financial interests over people’s lives.
Better that than to break open the magic seal of the huge endowment investment funds. Because, you know, with tuition at, what, 100k a year, the school might go bankrupt, right? This is pathetic. Appeasing a dictator never woks out well.
I would’ve thought that Columbia University’s endowment - which was worth $14.8 billion in June of last year - would be sufficient to cover the loss of $400 million in federal grants. Columbia University‘s leadership lacks the courage to fight fascism, even though they have the money to do so. JFC!
The withdrawal of $400 million in funding from the government made them quick to appease the worst administration in the history of the U.S. The history books will not forget this appeasement.
I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. Are they going to ban women and other minorities from holding leadership positions? If and when we have a decent president, I hope we revoke the tax-exempt status of religious orgs and cut all funding to faith-based colleges and universities.
This is a problem. Do act like Canada, which has refused to bend to Trump’s will; don’t act like Chuck Schumer, and Columbia University, which have bent over and capitulated to Trump. (Are New Yorkers going soft?)

Sure he’s no criminal.
Well know, formerly respected, University folds before Fascist pressure.
Truthful, concise. Go with this instead.

Without the funding Columbia would have likely shut its doors.

Roll over and play dead
Who wants to go to a very expensive school that will sell you to the government?
But you’re giving the Ivy League way too much credit.
