Cold temperatures tend to dampen tomato flavor by inhibiting the production of certain volatile compounds that contribute to their aroma and sweetness; essentially, a chilled tomato will often taste less flavorful and slightly bland compared to one kept at room temperature.
I don’t refrigerate mine because I feel like it does something to their texture. Maybe you can experiment and tell us what you think. I do refrigerate bananas once they are ripe and it surprises me that people don’t know they can.
You store them the way you found them. If you bought them at room temperature, store them at room temperature. If you bought them cold, put them in the fridge. Pretty much the rule for any fruit or vegetable.
I never leave my tomatoes out. Never. Try an experiment, put one tomato from the same batch in the fridge and one on the counter and see how well they do. I think you'll find the refrigerated tomatoes do better.
Forgive if I’m restating this, but as a recovering chef & former grocery store worker a good rule of thumb is to keep whole produce at home like it’s kept at the grocery store.
No Mia they are technically a fruit and it ruins their flavor. Any other cooking questions feel free to reach out. My dad was a chef and I'm a foodie! Also. Thanks for everything you do for society
If you want them to last, refrigerate them. But definitely let them warm up before you eat them.
(I suddenly thought “kind of like people” and now I don’t know what the hell to do.)
I buy fresh tomatoes from farms all summer. I watch every tomato on the counter every day, and when it reaches exact ripeness I either eat it that day or put it in the refrigerator. When brought back to room temperature the refrigerated tomatoes taste exactly like the fresh ones.
I like them better at room temp. But when I grow them in the summer, sometimes I have to refrigerate because they start going bad before I can use them.
No. You will notice the difference in taste between room temp and refrigerated. If you find you have to many tomatoes on hand, make a quick sauce to preserve the flavors. 😀
generally speaking, if a vegetable isn’t in a refrigerator when you buy it, there’s usually a reason. most stores want their produce to last as long as possible, and they optimize that kind of thing.
No, but I dice Roma tomatos to make spaghetti sauce for my daughter, I diced a qt. size bag and froze it. I pulled it out two weeks later and it was perfect for cooking, a little softer and more juice in the bag. Made a great spaghetti sauce, it helps if you have a bunch of extra tomatos to save.
I was told to store fruits and vegetables the way you purchase them in the store. So anything not in the cooler/ mister section is stored out of the fridge.
My wife freezes some of the tomatoes that she grows. When using them for sauces the peels come off easily. Tastes great.
Refrigerate yes when you buy from store.
I usually don't refrigerate them until after I've cut them up if I have left over. Not sure there's a hard fast rule. But the chill of the refrigerator can kind of take the flavor out of a tomato
@miafarrow.bsky.social - so wrong on the tomato front, but not wrong on the issues that matter to american democracy, join the League of Superheroes and oppose the Turtloid Tyrants.
You say tomato, I say tomato, you say potato I say potato
Tomato tomato

Lets call the whole thing off
🍅 My mother always did. But a friend showed me about twenty years ago that they're better at room temperature before they're cut. After slicing, the remainder should be refrigerated.
Ripe tomatoes
If you can't eat a ripe tomato right away, you can refrigerate it for up to two weeks.
Unripe tomatoes
Refrigerating unripe tomatoes can make them bland and mealy.
The large ones, never!
Little ones tolerate refrigeration better, but in a perfect world where we finish them up in a couple of days, their flavor and consistency much better without

It does extend their life but ruins their texture and flavor
(Unless they are already sliced and you plan to cook those ones up tomorrow.) 👍

Allow to come to room temp before eating.
Anything from the store - dont refrigetate.

If simply using for salad, don’t refrigerate, but use before spoiling.
