OMG, please can we go back to those "innocent times". It was on TV on Sunday nights in the UK and we'd all be talking about it over our coffee break the next morning. Glad it is there to bring you comfort in these difficult times.
Is it as good as the Keira Knightley Matthew McFadden version? I feel like that movie spoiled me for everything else. What you really need to watch is All Creatures Great and Small on PBS Masterpiece. You're welcome! https://m.imdb.com/title/tt10590066/
Jennifer Ehle did a « one chapter a day » reading of P&P in 2020 (on Instagram live and then YouTube). I would listen to it every evening as a way to wind down after working at a nursing home that was hit quite hard with Covid. It was a blessing 😌
Last time around I rewatched The West Wing for comfort but picturing the orange menace in those situations was anything but comforting. I’m glad you found something that works
All the Jane Austen, except Northhanger Abby, are getting me through this crisis. 1995 is the best Pride and Prejudice. Watched Mansfield Park yesterday, two versions. Thank-you Jane Austen.
Watched it last week when I had Covid. Then I tried Poldark but then had to stop after the season one finale because it killed my fluffy mindless romance buzz oooof 😭😭😭 I went in without knowing anything and it was rough…
Its beautiful❤️. When my flight was cancelled from TPA to YYZ bc of an ice storm, I watched the whole series. Love BBC. The new 4K version is AMAZING!
Then I rescheduled & flew from TPA to MSP to YWG (no more ice storms).
That film got me and my mother through the aftermath of my father's death. It will always be my favorite version of P&P.
(To decompress from the stress, I go to the National WWII Museum and sit among the exhibits, remembering we've deal with this type of evil before...and triumphed.)
ALL of the miniseries' are amazing: Emma (2009), Sense & Sensibility (2008), Jane Eyre (2006). People also swear by North & South (2004) but I didn't totally vibe with it, myself.
For me, Jane Austen's words, in any form, need my full attention to get all the subtlety and humor. They push everything else out, so it's like meditating. Haven't made room in my mind lately for that, but should.
Lol. Me too. I read a good preface to pride and prejudice that said that Mrs.Bennett is the only one who understands how precarious her daughter's situations are. Austin's books are not just love stories, they're about money and class structure and the limited opportunities for women
Yes! She’s so good. Great cast. Love this one. I also like the more recent one too. I know it’s not as critically acclaimed, but the dad! I love that actor. Fell in love with him watching Gosford Park.
The scene where she goes through the house telling the contractor her specific, descriptive color choices—then he tells the work crew—blue, yellow, green—makes me giggle every time.
I need to find it on DVD to watch it. I love the story, it's on Sleepy Bookshelf so I have listened to it maybe 100 times? The 1995 one is the only one I think I would like. I watched the trailer for the modern movie one and was horrified 😂
Haha I bet we are. I listened to over 100,000 minutes this year in Spotify wrapped. And a good 6 months of that was p&p every night. Jane Eyre was good too. And Emma
Never, ever tire of it. And listening to the audiobook narrated by Juliet Stevenson. So fun to share both with my teen and do all the Austens (except Emma, shudder) as read alouds. Treat yourself to @sbarolo.bsky.social and @shrewshrew.bsky.social ‘s #skeetjane threads as you watch
Great Movie!!! Writing and acting AND soundtrack AND cinematography are magnificent!! It’s a COMPLETE PICTURE. I will watch it during the next rainy day. Thanks for reminding me!!!
I was staying at the Red Lion pub in Lacock, Wiltshire (that was used for the external shots for the ball), the night before the BBC film unit transformed the pub and the street for filming! Had dinner with the director!
Maybe too close to your work, but Call the Midwife is my comfort watch for a world in which people take care of each other, work to help those who need it in their community, and women's health care matters intensely.
Thanks to the horror show just getting started in the Trump 'administration', I will require a steady diet of Jane Austen novel adaptations for the foreseeable future. This week I've inhaled 2 of the best, both from 1995: Pride & Prejudice (series), and Sense & Sensibility (film w/ Emma Thompson).
I’ve been re-reading all of Austen’s books the last few weeks for the same reason; forgot how much I like “Persuasion”. I may have to start all over again soon myself. Thank you, Jane
I watched disc one and two Monday and Tuesday nights. I’ll watch Keira Knightly’s one tomorrow night. Then Friday I’m watching Austenland.
Then repeat all of them again.
Comfort in chaos.
I had never watched Sense and Sensibility ever in my life... I just found it last weekend on Netflix ... Guess I'm going to have to watch Pride and Prejudice now...

(Emma and Persuasion!)
I watch Ted Lasso to decompress from the stress. Sometimes The Good Place, too.

I try to watch it annually as it’s a family favorite.
Then I rescheduled & flew from TPA to MSP to YWG (no more ice storms).
So good!

At this point, my brain is in Mrs. Bennett mode.
Twice.
Since last Monday.
(I get it, it's been bad out there).
It's a strange movie, entertaining but strange.
Highly recommend Lost in Austen, currently streaming on BritBox. And then watched Miss Austen Regrets.
At the time couldn’t articulate to my fam why Austen…

P&P is my happy movie for sure.
And I absolutely love it when Darcy shuts him down
Or any 90's movie really.
My mother went through an absolute obsession. She has watched it about a hundred times. Can't say I blame her. I would if I had the time.
Liked it too🩷
Then repeat all of them again.
Comfort in chaos.
Make you laugh for sure. Watched it all through COVID.
