Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey (R) signed a sweeping bill Wednesday that will restrict the teaching of “divisive concepts” and limit diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs at public schools, universities and state agencies.

If you teach about segregation then SOME people are going to loudly insist that you DO something about it,
and by "something" they don't mean "making more of it".
What does Alabama consider divisive? The earth is older than 6000 years? That LGBTQ+ are human and deserving of equal treatment under the law? Those divisive subjects?
“…. the bill’s definitions of divisive concepts include teaching that “any race, color, religion, sex, ethnicity, or national origin is inherently superior or inferior.” Sounds like it bans Christian Nationalism, Nazis, and American exceptionalism?
Teaching the history of racism and white supremacy in the US, if anything, REPUDIATES the idea that anyone is inherently inferior or superior. These people are racists and white supremacy trying to preserve the last vestiges of it with dishonest arguments.
Completely agree with your point in general. Im sure the bill is utter trash. Just interesting how the definition of divisive language referred to in the article (as quoted) would not lead to historical materialism being defined as divisive language - but most religious education would.
How can we make that happen? How about we get the leagues to refuse to hold any playoff or championship games in the state? Time to make the state pay in their pocketbook for their bigoted laws.
I don't think the powers that be would do that. They're old rich white guys.
There would have to be an organized movement amongst the athletes, and not just the black athletes, to not sign for schools inside Florida and Alabama. Make an exception for the HBCUs, but thats it.
Mississippi changed its flag from the confederate design precisely because the SEC threatened to not play in Mississippi anymore. They took that flag down so fast they had nothing to replace it with. Took them a while to come up with another permanent design.
I remember that. But in today's environment, I don't see the SEC or NCAA doing anything. The fragile whites would scream "woke" and the media would treat it as if it's a 2 sided issue.
The kids are going to have to lead the way. I wish it wasn't true, but today I think it is.
I think you are right here, and it pisses me off that the right wing racists are basically calling the shots today and calling anything they hate woke.
So a Public Library may not lend a book that mentions gay people to a 17 year old without a letter from their mamma? WTF is wrong with Republicans in these red states? Are they truly living in the 1950's?

Nah, they're not stupid. They're just a bunch of racists who don't want history taught because they want to repeat it.

Whatever my faults, I've never wanted a right that I want to deny to others.
