A man who was president 43 years ago dies, and "maybe it's not the right time to debate all this," as if he was America's grandfather and the news should just be playing mournful classical music for three days while all stores and shops are closed.

Maybe now, today isn't the right time for you guys to debate all this, at least publicly.
Please, in this time of chaos, allow us to have someone to revere for his goodness.

I appreciate your perspective and insight. Thanks for sharing. 👍
At least he wasn't eaten by wolves and was... delicious.

If it rubs you the wrong way when others do it, maybe that’s a good thing to keep in mind.
Yours is a very weird response. Be careful.

I mean, I’d bet a LOT
I still think though that Joni Mitchell’s “Help Me” is a good song. 😁
(I used to hate it too. Then I realized her singing in that song is kind of unbelievable. So many changes)
Transferring sovereignty of the canal to Panama? If so, should Reagan have reasserted US control over the canal?
Reagan and Trump have similarities.
Carter and Trump have none beyond a title.
And of the 3, Carter was the better man.
No matter, really.
We are about to suffer greatly.
Reagan paved the way for this.
So I hope folks keep the same position when it happens to the other side.
But I wonder if this were 2004 and Reagan had just died, if you'd feel the same way about people criticizing Reagan's legacy?
I struggle to see where the emotional reactions are coming from. It’s not like these people have a personal relationship with him.
😂
I never mind different perspectives as we assess a life.
I was born during Carter’s presidency and later I remember my parents - diehard Democrats - telling me that yes, he was a good and very smart man, but an ineffective president. Imagine.
I choose to revel in the wonderful life of public service, love of family and unwavering faith President Carter led.
His memory gives me comfort and hope, maybe there will be another like him who will step forward.
Why choose to be cold and calculating, emotions are OK too, right?
That is why some people are upset with you
I think highlighting Jimmy Carter's wonderful character is important right now when a very unfit man is about to be sworn in as prez.
Good Lord, even the New York Post is taking it easy today.
I’d bet money when poor Eden died ‘suez’ was in nearly every comment by every journalist right after . It’s not attacking the man as a person.
Note the context in which Suez is discussed.
Tom doesn't have that deft touch. Maybe that's the difference.
The Atlantic has multiple pieces today on Carter, but none from Tom the I have seen. Likely a reason.
I am less interested in the UK press, which is largely a blight.
The more I think about it, though, the more I realize it's just Tom's heavy-handedness. You have to thread the needle.
If Doris Kearns Goodwin were interviewed today, she might say much 1/
-I didn't agree with Reagan, but thought he was a decent man. Bush Sr as well.
-Even Nixon to some degree took ownership of his mistakes.
-Trump: Unlikely.
They also know Aristotle didn't stop with Logos and Ethos (yours are unassailable on the topic btw), if their goal is to communicate with fellow adults. However, a Reagan guy posting Carter critiques on the day of his death, suggests a "troll them" Pathos.
I should bow out, because I like you and want that hatchet to stay buried.
The worst thing we can do is deify the man and ignore what he did, good and bad

Carter isn't a murderer or terrorist. At a basic level, he was a good man. What do you lose by waiting 1 week?
It’s tedious as fuck.
One can appreciate a statesman without the telenovelas.
He was a good man but it's not a shocking tragedy that he died at 100 after a couple years of hospice care.

I lost my sister unexpectedly in 2021 and that was (and is!) completely devastating and life-changing and on some days it's still totally shocking that she's gone.
Carter lived a long, fulfilling life. This is how it's supposed to work.
He was a man all but obsessed with being a good man, a shocking and unusual thing in these times, but we have to be able to discuss his policies.
