I think the choreography in situations like this, is important. It’s easy to criticise in a posting as we munch on our toast in the morning but it’s not a role I’d envy and the implications of a misstep are enormous.

It might work in the short term (it’s unlikely Johnson tried it and failed) but as soon as Trump talks to Putin it will all fall apart. I think trying to manage Trump is a waste of time.

I think he’ll try and fail. If there’s any doubt in his mind, he should communicate the seriousness of the situation. He has to appear strong and decisive. There is no time.
