I am 69 years old and learned cursive in 2nd and 3rd grades. I can remember writing pages and pages of letters, then words to get it right. I prefer cursive over printing. My daughter is 38 and was never taught cursive.

I learned in elementary school in the 80’s, but I couldn’t say which grade it was. My oldest child moved from MI to TX between 4th & 5th grade. Cursive had already been taught when he got there, so he is almost 30 and has never written a full sentence in cursive. I taught him his signature.

I'm in the UK. In the late 1970's, I was 9 and was taught cursive writting. We were given cartridge fountain pens to use. Before that, we'd only ever wrote in pencil.

I moved at 8 from a district that hadn't taught it yet to a district that was using it for all written assignments. I had to stay in at recess to get caught up, and I will never forgive the system for trading precious hours of my childhood for a skill I only use to read cheap home decor.

I taught English in South Korea. The kids were never taught cursive, but we required to read it. Almost impossible if you've never seen it before. I taught them the letters Aa, Bb, if you remember the charts
Then I had them write the whole lower case in one move in their notebook. No issues after

This is very true for me, but I grew up with handwriting, and the only keyboard in the house was my Mom’s for her college essays. So cursive is a big part of my brain development. I wonder if studies take into account the differences of folks who grew up on keyboards.

Just retired as elem school educator. Most schools do not teach cursive. Kinders and first graders learn to print their letters and while there is a lot of hand writing practice it is more with printing. Plus- around 3rd grade kids use devices all the time. From Colorado. Hope this helps

yeah, in grade 3...a few years ago i was cleaning out my massive shoebox of elementary school school work and decided to keep it as a historical record. I was at a private school in Toronto, but I distinctly remember by public school friends having the same "Cursive Without Tears" handbook.

There are calls by some groups of parents to not only stop cursive but to stop teaching grammar as well. The logic being that AI and computers can do that and it takes too much classroom time. I am so happy for you that you retired!

As a university professor, I’m horrified they want to stop grammar lessons. My students (mid sized state school) already struggle with reading because they don’t understand subjects and objects of verbs. They can’t even communicate orally since they don’t know how to express ideas beyond a phrase.

keep in mind that everything takes time to teach. So instead of asking if it's worth to teach X or not (answer is always yes), ask yourself if given the limited schedule of a school it's the best among all other options

This is as bad as not having spelling tests because of spellcheck. None of these programs are infallible. You have to be able to review before turning something in.
Schools here in NC stopped teaching grammar & parts of speech years ago. I had to teach my kids both, along with how to write properly.

I attended a Catholic elementary school in the early 1960s. We all learned the Palmer Method of cursive writing in grade 3. We used special pens, and had to pass a test for a grade in cursive writing. I’m appalled that children aren’t being taught cursive writing anymore.

The only bit I can find for actual news sources show an increase in states requiring cursive writing since 2016, from just 14 states, to more than 25 states in 2024. My son is 20 & was taught cursive.

They tried, and I rejected it, preferring printing. In high-school, I had a particularly strict teacher, so I wrote and essay about why I print, and positing the question, why should I be forced to write in cursive?

He changed his policy thereafter, and I print to this day.

It was probably 3rd or 4th grade when I learned cursive. Lefthanded too so my teacher was always on my case about the angle of the letters. It was uncomfortable to get the angle they wanted. I later learned hand drafting block letters so my natural writing is a mix of cursive and block print.

My grandkids never learned how to write in cursive I’m 61 when I went to school, we learned both my kids learned both and they’re in their 30s. I know that my granddaughter is 19 and was never taught cursive.
