Seeing a lot of maga attack the new pope for acting Christian. When you’ve made enemies of Elmo and Jesus Christ, it’s time to reevaluate your positions.
I am not a Christian but I am going to love this Pope. He is the right person for the right time in history. I did love Pope Francis for his compassion and humility.
Time for #PopeLeo to excommunicate all Catholic Republican representatives who support and/or vote for Trump’s anti-Christian, human rights violating policies. Stop using/perverting Christianity to profit and harm. #GOPExcommunication

Strange how things unfold. Majority of American Catholics supported & voted for a man convicted of felonies and found liable for rape, while the head of their Church—now an American—holds values that contradict theirs.
On one level it’s remarkable, theologically, that he basically retweeted “‘thoughts and prayers’ are useless”…except of course he’s recognizing that the phrase has become a euphemism for appearing concerned while doing nothing.
The best part is that woke White Sox fan Deep Dish Pope Leo is young. The new rightwing Catholics will have plenty of time to get to know him and learn about what Jesus really taught.
Tell it like it is Senator. Their thoughts and prayers is just a typical bullshit Republican phrase designed to excuse them from doing something about it. Kind of like their "party of family values" and "party of law and order". They are no longer a party just call them what they are, "a cult".
As a new Pope is elected, the republican party and the shenanigans they so openly exposed to the public, was their hidden agendas. The blasphemy of using God's name to do evil with contempt. They acquiesce to silence. Lack courage to understand what we see.
"We shall know them by their fruits."☝️
I think Pope Leo XIV will continue Pope Francis' legacy. I was surprised to see an American-born Pope, as the Vatican has said that while America is a world leader, they would never elect an American Pope. This clearly signals that the Vatican no longer considers America a world leader!
I am not sure that any of us is ready for a Pope who tweets in a personal capacity, speaks fluent English and can therefore engage in public American debates, if he so chooses
first speculations: he was specifically spoken to activate the American Church and bring it under auspices of Rome through good deeds of sheltering the refugee and feeding the poor.
the roman catholic church was born in the death throes of empire.
I doubt he will speak English often. But when he does, I am looking forward to him presenting as an intelligent and deeply thoughtful man, humble before God. Americans need to see that example. Also the world needs to see that.
Italian TV aired an interview with the Pope dating a few years ago and he spoke a perfect Italian, with almost no foreign inflection
Quite remarkable, indeed
What I am finding difficult to come to terms with is the Pope today has much more in common with me and even though this is not correct, I see him as the first "Modern" Pope when it comes to technology and experiences.
I left the Church in my early 20s (I hated the teachings and misogyny, but loved the ritualistic traditions) and became a practicing pagan. Yet, I am now so invested in this new pope and what happens next. I think this will be good for the Church.
I stopped going after I was confirmed at 14, and quit for many of the same reasons that you gave. I always liked the ritual of it all. My journey is similar to yours and I'm really happy about the new Popes apparent humanitarianism and compassion. I think this is good for everyone. It's hopeful.
I went to catholic school up until high school & I honestly connected so much with the religion when it came to mass & the Holy days of obligation. But as I became older I realized as a woman I could no longer support the teachings. I did get married in the Church & that was it. I was on a new path
That is so interesting. I always loved Mass too. In my teens, and occasionally into young adulthood, I would go to Mass randomly, if I needed some kind of solace. I got married in the church too, but stopped going completely after that. I didn't like the misogyny either and took a different path.
Maybe he could compromise and root for the Red Sox. Massachusetts is the second most Catholic state in the country, and most Catholic is Rhode Island to the south. My lifelong support for the Red Sox is not affecting my objectivity, I swear.
But seriously I know the US is badly in need of moral leadership but the Pope does after all have to deal with extreme poverty, climate change and a world of issues. We really can’t expect him to prioritize only this…
Trump may claim he was sent by God, but it sounds like this new Pope was actually sent by God to tell Trump and his Gaggle of Goons to FUCK OFF. Let's see if Trump tries to tax only the Catholic Church. Churches that are Pro Trump have to make way for churches that are Anti Trump.
Maybe recent Popes going back to John XXIII may have been asked which football aka soccer team they rooted for. But I'm sure they've never been asked about baseball. Oh wait, didn't Paul VI celebrate a Mass in Yankee Stadium? Somebody might have asked him about baseball.
But Francis's support for Boca Juniors was totally a big, noteworthy news item while he lived. It was a thing people knew.
So the Chicago baseball thing does make sense for a reporter to get the story on. (Even if Sox/Cubs lacks the brutal and violent nature of the Buenos Ares area rivalry.)
NBC was interviewing one of the Pope's close friends, who texted the Pope during the interview to ask which team he supports. The Pope replied: White Sox.

I long for the days when public officials made public statements accepting that they were representing their institution - and in the case of the President, an entire country - and kept their personal, snarky, juvenile, embarrassing comments private. (Can’t believe Nancy Mace is a public employee.)
One of his first acts should be to send Cardinal Dolan to a new assignment in a diocese filled with refugees so he can see what his buddies Trump and Vance are doing.
The interesting thing to me is his choice of the name Leo XIV, which seems to be a nod to Leo XIII, who was best known for his open letter "Rerum novarum," which was an ode to the dignity of the working class & a pushback against the sins of both Capitalism & Socialism
I think it was also in the early times of what we now think of as Socialism. I'm no expert, but my understanding is at the time is was seen by Socialists as a massive smackdown.
Obviously 1890s Eurooean socialists wouldn't have enjoyed the pope (then much more influential) rubbishing their movement. But the substance is pretty unconvincing.
I’m wondering whether the cardinals might have opened up a can of worms by abandoning their unspoken rule against electing a pope who is also a citizen of the world’s dominant superpower. Every conspiracy theorist in the world (outside the U.S., anyway) is going to speculate that he’s a CIA agent.
You have a point. Even with all its aircraft carriers and nuclear submarines etc., the U.S. under Trump really isn’t a superpower anymore. Anyway, the extremely traditionalist Catholic current within the MAGA movement is plainly unhappy. That has to be a good thing.
Pope Francis did just that - he put in place the people who would elect this guy. Like Trump got to pack the courts during his last stint in office to get favorable results?
Francis saw the writing on the wall with the American Catholic Church and knew the shit they were trying to pull. He made…
One of Jesus' teachings is about visiting those in prison. trump better reconsider bringing Abrego home or there may be an international crisis with those Catholics. I'm loving the idea of the Pope sending a message to those who would profit off of the unjust incarceration of others.
I can understand his aversion to guns. He started out his work not very far from the infamous Chuck's Gun Shop which finally shut down for good only weeks ago. Chuck's was responsible for selling weapons to all sorts of people who shouldn't have had them, many of those up until recently,
He was born and schooled in the USA but left for Peru where he worked decades with the very poor. He's got a Peruvian passport!!
Would he have been more in the USA he would have spoken English. (His mother is Spanish)
I'm very curious how he'll react if he ever has a clinch with nr45. 😅
Italian is the everyday business language in the Vatican
And the crowd in St. Peter's square, Italians apart, was mainly composed of Spanish speaking people, I guess
I believe that was Francis's goal- in making him cardinal in '23, bringing him to Rome to train him as insider & to appoint bishops around the world, & likely lobbying for him before his death. He wanted someone who knows this culture & could engage the danger, ugliness emanating from the top.
I’m mostly happy to say that I couldn’t remember all of the elections that happened after 11/5 that went leftward. Thank you for replyers for adding to the list.
Also jedenfalls war er in beiden Fällen noch nicht Papst LEO XIV , beim Datum habe ich englische Schreibweise angenommen, 17. Februar 2010, mit der Aussage zu Vance hat er vollkommen Recht!
You would have thought gun control would be a no brainer. And Trump may bang on about drugs coming north but what about the iron river flowing south into Mexico? And as I understand it the gun cult was largely started by Samuel Colt. I think they call it marketing.
He also believes in fairy tales and magical beings that don't exist and thinks humans should base their decisions around both. Maybe not the hero everyone is making him out to be?
The fact that Pope Leo has made his support for improved U.S. gun control publicly known on his first full day in the 'big chair' has me feeling pretty darn good about this man. 🙂
"The Catholic guy likes immigrants and thinks school children shouldn't be decapitated by bullets!"
We live in some dark, dark times when this isn't just a given.
The far right extremists are mainly Evangelical Christians, not Roman Catholics... for the most part anyway. Heritage Foundation religious fanatics are the problem. Catholicism has its own problems without lumping fanatical evangelicals in the mix.
But a lot of American Catholic leadership made an unholy alliance with the Moral Majority. This is the reason the Catholic school of my youth in the 80s went from teaching that Jesus is love, be like Jesus, to getting kids as young as PreK involved “life chains” and other “prolife” demonstrations.
A Pope that tweets - how comforting. If religion has taught me anything, it's that everyone massages the base teachings to suit their own personal narratives. Popes included.
Pope John Paul ll ( who was Polish) helped to precipitate the downfall of communism, perhaps the new, American pope, will help precipitate the downfall of cruel capitalism
@anneapplebaum.bsky.social
Apparently this new American Pope came as a surprise. Not a frontrunner, not expected! It's hard not to think, given their choice and the rather quick process they went through, that he is largely in response to Trump!💙✌️
As a supporter of the second amendment I love this. Americans think the right to own a firearm means that there shall be virtually no regulations on that firearm which is just crazy.
Btw -Interesting if a foreign born that took on USA citizenship wins the Nobel, he is an American. If an American that took on Peruvian citizenship, as he pursue his religious call, becomes Pope, he is not Peruvian or Peruvian American. He is American. 🤔🤔

Whose gonna argue with that!
👍
Quite remarkable, indeed
By far better than Woityla and Bergoglio
Well said.
Americans themselves can only be divided. How they express themselves will set the general tone.
What will the Orthodox church have to say?
Who will be interested in whatever narrative is to prevail?
