The ending paragraph of the article is disgusting. If I made a broad sweeping statement about a genre that was untrue because I was only aware of, like, three games in the genre, my editor would body slam me through a desk.

this guy has clearly never played Final Fantasy XVI, the Legend of Heroes: Trails, Soul Hackers 2, or Tales of Arise.
The only JRPG series he played is Persona, which ironically enough a fan favorite game, Persona 2: Eternal Punishment, stars all adults.
heck, i dont think a single final fantasy has a party of all teenagers. theres several middle aged men and two kids in iv, the scions of the 7th dawn in xiv are mostly in their 20s, etc
FF occasionally has all-teenage parties (VIII, Type-0, The 4 Heroes of Light, and the DS remake of III come to mind) but the main casts are much more often majority 20+ in age, including some of the most iconic ones like VII, VI, and IV.
fwiw clair obscur is made by a team that clearly adores JRPGs and is wearing its inspirations on it sleeve very proudly. some bad articles giving racist takes on the genre shouldn't deter you from such a good game.
That’s good to know, it just seems like when a lot of a praise for a game comes from dillweeds even if they are misconstruing the developer’s intent it leaves a bad taste in my mouth
i feel bad for the clair obscur developers because they have been so open about how much they love jrpgs new and old and they absolutely didn't ask to be treated as The Western Saviors of the Genre that a lot of hack writers are treating them as
As a fan of JRPGs since I was little. I can see how much the development team truely love the genre.
Everytime a new mechanic or gimmic pops up, it like opens up a memory of games I had long since forgotten. It feels like the ultimate tribute game/swan song made with love
What irritates the shit out of me about articles like this is that they clearly do NOT understand that the creators of Expedition 33 **fucking adore** JRPGs and this game is quite literally a love letter to the ones they liked.
It’s crazy to see takes like that because FF7(both versions) is nothing like they are describing and is also one of the most influential video games of all time
>unsubtle
The irony is that they mistaken characters being quite the same as being subtle. Many JRPGs are loud because it’s fun, and the subtlety is in the negative space of that storytelling, what’s not being said
everyone at polygon is out of a job and people who write shit like this are still getting a paycheck. example number infinity that there's no justice in this world
No, no, everything must be Depression. That's why every single game must be devoid of color, every character must be Morally Grey (ie actually evil) and backstab you at every turn, and have no hope or cheer in the story or world at all
Still remember the huge scandal when Diablo 3 had "too much color" because there was a rainbow over a creek that you can easily miss if you're not paying attention to the environment, with some complaining about this absurdly cheerful map you need to intentionally follow a 10 step process to see
It'd have been fine if all they said was that they weren't into the genre before Expedition 33, but this paragraph is like if you got past first base with the coolest partner ever and you insulted their heritage and everything they stand for out of nowhere, in front of their family.
This is super disrespectful to the devs as well cause they aren’t trying to fix the genre or make games better than jrpgs … they LOVE jrpgs and they have pride in the fact that they’re inspired by jrpgs
This tone deaf article is insulting to them as it disregards that the devs of expedition 33-
I'm sorry but Clair Obscure is literally a Final Fantasy 10 clone with less content.
It's really good. I love it. But it doesn't invent the wheel anew.
It definitely has FFX as one of its inspirations but its exploration is more like earlier FF games (world map! waow) and even the battle system and the way you set up character abilities could be said to be more like Shadow Hearts or Lost odyssey
I love their take on the world map!
And you're right. When I posted that I had just played through a section that was very Zanarkand, with a soundtrack that sounded like a variation of To Zanarkand. I guess that influenced my opinion, lol

You'd think sheer weight of competition would eliminate stuff like this, and yet ..
*looks at Xenoblade 3*
Yeah, that's definitely exclusive to games about adults. Sure.
The only JRPG series he played is Persona, which ironically enough a fan favorite game, Persona 2: Eternal Punishment, stars all adults.
MAYBE II, but I don't know their ages, and even then the 4th party member changes throughout the story and there's at least two adults there.

Hell they fucking promoted the hundred line a verrrry anime jrpg
