That’s a much more recent book in the genre, but I remember reading books that are now in the banned list in the 80s and 90s as required reading in school. 1984, Of Mice and Men, To Kill a Mockingbird, Animal Farm. That was all 90s Alabama high school reading.

You know what bothers me about Tree Brooklyn? The main character promises God she will stop writing if her mum gets well, but keeps writing after her mum gets well. Now, I don't think God wants us to follow through with evil promises like that (Don't know) but MC didn't seem to struggle with it.

I have always seen that as the realization that making promises to a deity type under duress aren't the best promises. That we'll say things in desperation that harm ourselves. I felt sad that Francie became more hardened.

As someone who has been actively stock piling some of these books, if you have a thrift store like savers near you they tend to have most of these super cheap ( most i think I've paid is $3-$4 sometimes less than $2)! Just a little helpful tip since books can get pricey! :)
