I've gone back to paper books from a physical bookstore/library for most of my references. It's not ideal or foolproof but it cuts a lot of crud.

Also! There's an ai blacklist filter you can install on UblockOrigin. It really does seem to help.

This is a great example because peafowl are common park birds, so lots of non-specialists have seen peachicks and know what they look like. But many other birds, and certainly most fish and insects, are more obscure.

For Google you can limit search results to those before a certain date. Enter “before:YYYY-MM-DD” in to the search bar.

I have learned that typing "-ai" and "-prompt" seems to filter out a good bit of the ai junk on google, I hope that helps

In google, you can stick “before:2021” at the end of a query to filter out AI images. I tested it with this query and it got rid of every one of the big-eyed blue-and-greens and the ludicrous chick-with-mating-plumage results.

Beyond all the ethical concerns around AI images, which are important in and of themselves, the fact that these get mixed up with regular images, most of the time unlabeled and with no way to be blocked from the search, is annoying at best and dangerous at worst because of misinformation.

I know there are work-arounds for the more tech-savvy among us so in that way it's not much more than an annoyance. But it really makes it clear how misinformation can spread, even if (with the benefit of the doubt) that wasn't the original intention.

I use different search engines entirely. Google is a big nope for me because they do this.
