1/ Media needs to explain this is NOT a legal option.
Yes, Trump said he's “most likely” to give #TikTok 90-day extension.
No, that's not a legally available option.
The 270 days lapsed. An extension is no longer available (even if TikTok met 3 conditions for extension, which it surely doesn’t.)

Without U.S. approval, there is no TikTok. With our approval, it is worth hundreds of billions of dollars — maybe trillions."
State-owned media, what could possibly go wrong….
😏
"not a legally available option"
Aren't you adorable. This is so far down the scale of illegal things he is doing or has done and has gotten away with.
"Media needs to explain"
Bless your heart, you are the sweetest.
Corporate GCs are a different matter since the financial penalties for ignoring the law are severe.
He probably can do it, and presidents have in the past. Like when Obama said he will not be enforcing federal marijuana laws. If the law is there, but if the instruction is to not enforce it, does it matter?
And it’s been made clear by the moves of the billionaires who own so much of the media they have ZERO interest in the truth. Just profits.
WE have to explain. So I appreciate this thread.
outrage to shape the narrative rather than sitting passively by while trump portrays himslef as the hero- lay this egg on his feet- his executive order, his supreme court https://www.threads.net/@5nark_twain/post/DE_2kxYxLUD?xmt=AQGzFoLKoyX_1P0VnW_xAOcA6ZP8xne3BDOu-unDhrX3qQ
“ I have total Immunity” drink. The numbness will help get through this fascist corruption.
- NYT
Immunity on steroids❕
They also know the message their base will hear:
“I would have done it if it wasn’t for those pesky Democrats and their rule of law….”
This ongoing GOP Coup has many tentacles.
Control of the media is imperative.
Controlling minds is the result.
Which comes back to the problem of a president being above the law. Choosing which laws to enforce. Not ideal.
(I feel much like I did when legal expert after legal expert told us there was no way SCOTUS would give him any immunity. Then...)
"I'm told TikTok's host (Oracle) and CDN (Akamai) brought it back online today because Trump assured them they'd not be subject to penalties - something he can't entirely promise."

It doesn’t make illegal stuff enforceable, regardless of how its officiality is characterized.

Dems wring their hands and whine that they cyaaaaaan't, while the Pubes laugh.
Can also read here the conditions for a presidential certification for an extension.
They can just change the rules.

Cotton et al have said that any company that aids TikTok (say, by allowing people to download its app) would be liable for legal action.
@martylederman.bsky.social on why Google, other companies may not risk supporting TikTok even if Trump says won't enforce law
@georgewang.bsky.social on concerns re precedent of investing government officials with broad authority to turn off and on citizens' access.
On why Google, Apple, etc would not want to risk hosting TikTok even if Trump tries an Exec Order or non-enforcement.

Trump IS the law, unfortunately.
And why not? He is immune from any penalty for violating law. Supremes will probably back him, and even if not will give him years of ambiguity.
Senators Tom Cotton and Pete Ricketts:
"Now that the law has taken effect, there’s no legal basis for any kind of 'extension' of its effective date."

"[A]s I understand the law, it's 270 days unless extended, and once that time runs, I'm not sure you're talking about an extension anymore."
That said, ...
Laws? Please, those don't apply to him.
"We have not run it to ground, in part, because it's simply not presented here, and I'm not prepared to take a position on that statutory interpretation question."

I hope this is NOT the case....
They're supposed to be for things like declaring it National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day and little else.
These folks have too much money and they can control a lot with it.

T does not follow laws. Elon doesn't either. Zuck/Bezos are in hot pursuit. Because in America, accountability is for poors.
I too would like news outlets to alert us to the likely lawlessness of an executive order to extend
and to Trump as he is: emulating ancient Germanic kingship, treating laws + Bill of Rights as not how world works
Tomorrow a new day of lawlessness begins. It will be much worse than the last time.
Why listen to SCOTUS when you can make money otherwise?
Good luck with that.

Who, exactly, is going to enforce the rule of law after tomorrow, 12:01PM?
Can’t Trump just waive a chubby little finger and make any law go away at least from an enforcement standpoint?
So, ignoring the fact that 3a-c aren’t currently applicable, is the extension really dead?
Why anyone expects anything more out of them baffles me
After all, if they did you would have actually investigated the massive fraud in the election. Or stopped Trump because of his impeachment. Or sent him to jail after being found guilty of serious crimes.
The US did NOTHING.
But don’t dare call it deplorable!! Basket as party.
I’m just reposting this to all those “aghast.”
The president cannot over-ride the ban without Congressional action.
How long are we going to keep doing this for fuck sake.
