Elon Musk is powerful, dangerous and an incredible bore - we’re going to have to hold him and the other tech bros to account because Donald Trump certainly won’t.

I'm getting to like @eddavey.libdems.org.uk more and more. He's the only British leader of a main party who is calling out Musk and Trump and not cow-towing to them.
Please make yourself heard in Parliament. I fear that our government is already pandering to the orange felon and his head of propaganda and some of the guff coming from Reeves at the moment is terrifying. Wake up now or we will have our own far right filth in number 10 by 2029.
Musk is unhinged and his manipulation of X is dangerous! We need the Digital Services Act (DSA) in the UK to demand transparency of X. The EU has already begun a probe into X with regard to election interference using the DSA. (Nick Klegg should be able to help now that he’s left Meta.)
With respect to foreign owned apps... will the UK/EU potentially follow the US's lead and start banning certain foreign owned apps that don’t comply with our standards?
I would argue this is a matter of national security.
As far back as 2015/16 (with the Cambridge Analytica scandal whereby Russia used Facebook data to influence the passing of Brexit and election of Trump), there have been concerns about the transparency of algorithms and data usage.
And now, as both Meta and X have abandoned fact checking and reduced content moderation standards, there are growing concerns about hate speech, disinformation, propaganda, and potentially the instigation of violence.
I'm not sure what the answer is, but I know the fascists are loving the fact we're talking about them. I would say starving them of oxygen, but they're are hugely influential, so the place to hit them is in the pocket.
Good article. Can you try and persuade Starmer to use this platform as well as X, along with other cabinet ministers & Gov't departments? @rthonwesstreeting.bsky.social @yvettecooper-mp.bsky.social @darrenpjones.bsky.social
I agree! We need Ed Davey to be a bold and courageous voice for the UK and greater world order.
Starmer unfortunately has to strike a balance to maintain diplomatic relations with the US. Badenoch is moving farther to the right chasing Reform votes. And Farage has always been a Trump sycophant!
Starmer is just showing how weak he is by not speaking up. Other nations have denounced what happened over the last couple of days... From him .. bugger all
It's a dismal position with lunatics like Trump & Musk. They are totally unpredictable, though both driven by power & money. And Trump can do huge damage to the UK just through grievance. I have sympathy for those dealing with him. Outright attacks will also have consequences. Starmer is in a bind.
The only way to shut Trump up and for him to back down is to be forceful back at him . If you appease him , he walks over you and wipes you off like dogsh*t on a shoe.
Starmer's refusal to restore the Leveson Inquiry, let alone to introduce legislation to set up a much needed official press regulator in view of today's admission by News Group Newspapers that private investigators working for The Sun had acted unlawfully on many occasions, is even more alarming.
Well, Nick Clegg left Meta when Zuck decided to stop fact checking and join the dark side. And recently Clegg has been instrumental in getting several Lib Dem MPs elected. So I think he has a role to play, especially in protecting the UK from social media threats.
Sorry didn't realise that FB was a lovely company up until the point of taking away fact checking, my apologies.
Also the libdems are a bunch of turncoats, especially after getting into bed with David Cameron. If they hadn't done that, BREXIT would not have happened.
Part of me also wants to say this ketamine user shouldn't be given headlines now. Jess took the right approach with him. We need to prioritise trade with EU, proportional representation and social care reform.
Definitely worth all govt, county council members and district/city councils to leave X and move to BlueSky. X is dying in the water by the day, numbers are dropping. Trump understands dropping numbers. Musk will get the fallout.
I'd think about strategically voting for the Lib Dems if Ed Davey would come out and clearly state that the actions of the LibDems between 2010 and 2015 - propping up an austerity crazed Tory government - were reprehensible.
Over to you Ed.
We and I included Europe have within our power to simply say , that if you as a IT platform ignore information , that illegal content is being shared on your platform then a fine of £10k /€10k per view of said content will be issued until removed. If ignored then the amount could be raised daily 🤔🤷♂️
Ed Davey is yet another politician still to grasp this.
I’ve seen better analysis from Musk’s own AI bot Grok than has appeared in the media so far (with the exception of Business Insider - link included as well below) ⬇️
Well said, Ed. "Elon Musk appears to give fascist-style salute", says the Guardian photo caption. I thought it was unambiguous, and I never thought I'd live to see such as thing. Utterly depressing.
I take it this means you'll be closing your 𝕏 and Farcebook accounts now then. Or will you continue to support their credibility by aiding their success? I'll respect you and your party (and the others) more when you all disengage from the sewers.

Unfortunately, it’s challenging for our elected leaders to immediately get off of X. Davey has to be able to reply to misinformation about himself or others until we can move a critical mass of users to BlueSky. We can help by leaving X ourselves now and bringing more friends over to BlueSky.
I fully appreciate the ties to X. However, with algorithms etc being controlled by someone as cynical as Musk you really have to ask "is it worth it?". Good politicians bring the people with them. Someone has to go first and he is the best placed of our party leaders. A generic acct can always stay.
Besides, his latest posting is self promoting, not answering misinformation. In the grand scheme of things, leaving is by far a louder message than anything posted if staying. Someone, somewhere needs to have the courage. Besides, Ed always has TikTok, and we know how much he likes that😁

But he's a fragile little boy who seems overly obsessed with the UK, considering he just bought the presidency of the USA.
You'd think that would be enough, wouldn't you?
Keep on poking that Nazi snowflake, Ed!

But what do we do if he calls Musk a Nazi (many in his party have) and they decide to put 20% tariffs on all UK trade?
It's horrible because these d***heads have a win win situation.

I do also agree with another poster that withdrawing from his social media platform is now a very obvious thing to do.
We must all get together to protect democracy and we can only do it by hitting their pockets.
Ban their businesses and ban them from entering the UK.
Over to you Ed.
I’m proposing this for UK and Europe.
Brazil banned and fined X and it worked.
