Today, a study suggests that the shingles vaccine—the current one—makes you less likely to get dementia.
In surprisingly notable ways.
Can’t vouch for it.
At all.
But consider getting it.
Especially if you’ve had chicken pox.
I did in the last few months.
It takes two appointments.

A recent study identified a significantly lower incidence of AD in individuals prescribed valacyclovir and acyclovir.
1 study showed that individuals with untreated shingles had a higher risk of dementia compared to those who received antiviral treatment.
Trust me, I got horrible case of shingles 5 yrs ago, lasted 4 months.
Caused significant nerve damage which still rears its head.
I wouldn’t wish that pain on anyone!
Cynically, it would more than pay for itself in a couple of years, considering how costly dementia care is.
I really hope the study is proven correct because the one thing that I am most afraid of is losing my memory
i’ve been hesitant due to not knowing if it would make my joints hurt for months after. 🫠
i’m so glad it works tho and i may bite and get it anyway.
I had a painful bout of shingles in November and I am still experiencing nerve damage and chronic nerve itching, which is enough to drive anyone up the wall. Definitely worth it to get a vaccine to avoid this.
Goes to show, though, that a virus that doesn't kill you is more likely to leave you vulnerable rather than stronger.
ty for sharing.
Get the vaccine.
But the recommendation in most countries is that if your status is unknown then you can safely get the vaccine.
This help preventing dementia, though, is some especially yummy icing on that cake.
But be ready: The shot is more painful than most vaccines, although I don't know why.
I’ve seen what it looks like when Chicken Pox bites your intercostal nerves….

Check with your doc/pharmacy about the shingles shot before or after a c pox vax
But I was able to get in at the last second and I'm glad I did.
Better safe than sorry.
Really glad to hear this news today.

The shingles vaccine knocked me out for a day+ each time- not pleasant, but I'm very happy to have done it.
0/10 would not recommend.
I’m not old enough to need the vaccine but you’re damned skippy I’m getting it asap.
Another relative almost lost her sight when she got Shingles in HER EYE
I recommend everyone get the vaccine as soon as you can
Whoop
I got the shots last year, after hearing how awful shingles is from relatives. Had severe cpox in tweens, don't want to risk it. Even offered to help pay for a friend's shots (they're on a fixed income).

Get the damn shots.
That's probably the only good thing I have to say about CVS.
You can't do that with Covid shots because they have to be thawed. But I get all my shots there.
It was the most exquisite pain I’ve ever experienced; it traveled along nerve pathways, erupting on the left leg.
Do.not.recommend.
I know, I know.
