“Uh I don’t really get what the moral dilemma is here. A rapist murderer gets his comeuppance and that’s bad? There must be something I’m missing. Yeah, that’s it, the movie is just too smart for me. I don’t want to look dumb, so I’ll say it was genius!”
For one thing, Kidman and Cruise were miscast. (Kidman might have been okay with another costar; Cruise didn't belong in that film.) But I think the script was not good either.
I had been longing to see his steampunk movie, The Extraordinary Adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec. finally caught a video screening at a con. Not only bad, but horrifically racist. If I’d seen it first, it would have spared me the experience of Valerian.
My favorite visceral reaction to a movie was my best friend screaming "Oh, COME ON, Stanley!" out loud in a crowded college cinema as the minister takes ten minutes to scuttle his way towards a hospital bed.
I can't opine on any of this Mr. Bouie - since I don't ever watch a movie that can be described as "scary" or "tense" or "violent" or anything else that carries largely negative overtones...
I tried watching it again recently and was like maybe I'll finish it later. I wonder if Kubrick using the original ending of the book would have made it hold up better?

Fortunately Blade Runner 2049 is both gorgeous and a good film.
I do understand the praise for 2001. It’s good.

I recently watched it for the first time since its theatrical release, and as much as I hated it back then, I hated it more.
I think the American version is better but the author strongly disagrees.
That guy, just like, as a human, is... not great.
Beautiful movie, awful movie.
(I watched it a second time thinking that maybe I would have liked it more on the second viewing. Nope.)
I try so much, but I can't
[ducks]
