I always try to smile at service workers and be patient with them, because I know they get a lot of anger thrown at them. And it costs me absolutely nothing, but it might be the thing that saves someone's day.

Also, it just makes sense to be nice to servers/bartenders from a selfish standpoint even if you're naturally an asshole. They will give you better service if you aren't a dick. If it's a place you go to often, they'll be happy to see you and make sure you're taken care of even when they're busy.

Years ago I worked a food stand at a music festival and a guy left a 10 in the tip jar and I was so broke that I said “thank you” in such a genuine way that I believe I actually disturbed him. He was like “uh no problem man, it’s totally fine it’s 10 bucks”. Never forgot to be that way myself

Agree so hard. My wife and I have split from entire friend groups over their treatment of service folks, and being polite to people is like one of our top priority lessons we teach our kids. It is, like literally, the bare minimum you can do. Plus tipping well. Basic stuff.

This happened to me on Monday. Dinner at a nice restaurant for a work trip - table of 8. Main waiter was very nice and did a great job. I felt like I was the only one at the table thanking him as he hauled out drinks, dishes, etc. As we were leaving, dude gave me a sincere pat on the back. 1/2

The nicest thing I've done in my life: 15 of us went out after a work event, everyone had ~2 drinks, some ordered at the table and some at the bar, a few left early. When the server came over and said resignedly "how do you want the checks?" I paid for everyone's so she didn't have to sort it out

We have a local mobile app in my country for sending money to friends, and we always have one person pay the restaurant bill and then we just divide up the bill and send the money to the person paying.
