The '82 film is one of my all time favorites, I can't recommend it enough.

I actually kinda agree. The original is my all time favorite movie. This one has some neat kills, good creature design, but suffers with bad CGI, some shaky character logic, and being too much of a scene-for-scene remake

The shaky logic I mean, is there's no logical reason for the Griggs-Thing to change, there's no good reason Joel Edgerton never says what happened to the guy guarding him, stuff like that. In the original, the thought processes of the characters make disturbing sense.

i agree with this, I actually really like the 2011 thing and champion it's characters. that said, I wish they'd stuck to their guns and made the movie with practical effects, because the cg is not great and undercuts the ties to the original.

Agreed. I enjoyed that they didn’t delve into the lore of the Thing whatsoever except show the ship a little more. Too many prequels destroy the mystery of stories with an origin that no one is happy with. Fun movie.

i think the film dropped not long after the Romanek Wolfman film was scrapped, and it was this double hit of "wottif?" practical fx swang song for classic creature features.

I feel like a lot of people were put off by the CGI heavy creature effects. No idea what happened to make them do this but most of the creatures were first done practically but were later almost completely redone with sometimes subpar CGI.

I always thought "the CGI is bad" was a weak accusation. Sure, it's a large part of what's beloved about the original, but the prequel is made with care, and with obvious reverence. It's unfairly maligned.
