I would say Guitar Hero had legitimate musical value just based on how many songs I instantly associate with playing on Guitar Hero. There’s some songs you have an entire relationship with like yeah I know how to play that on a plastic guitar

Thought about this post some more today. I first heard of The Living End through GH and I don’t think I’ve ever heard them from any other source. 20 years later I checked out their discography because that one song was stuck in my head all these years. Turns out they’re amazing.
it's funny when people say "play a real guitar" because I played both quite a bit and Guitar Hero actually helped my dexterity at the time as well as teaching me the muscle memory for solos, I remember picking up my guitar and just playing More than a Feeling solo perfect despite never learning it
Part of it was having a knack for scales but the other part of it was part of the finger movements being engrained in my mind combined with hearing the song.
Yeah I'm thinking of buying a plastic guitar again to play Band Hero (can't find my copy of Guitar Hero 3) to improve my dexterity on the actual guitar.
I was gonna try to find you the link to the new guitars that just got released (third party, PDF Riffmaster) and i came across this...hadn't heard about it, looks incredible. (Pricey, but nice) https://crkd.gg/pages/crkd-x-gibson
Guitar Hero has been more foundational to my entire life than I give it credit for.
I think joy and happiness in the world died the same time rhythm games did. With a brief exception for the week Pokémon Go launched I haven’t felt optimistic since I was on tour during games night with friends.
The only game that has come close to scratching that itch for me has been Spin Rhythm XD, and I contend that it is the only rhythm game that feels natural to play with a keyboard+mouse https://store.steampowered.com/app/1058830/Spin_Rhythm_XD/
This and Rock Band. I still have vivid memories of getting a perfect on hard drums on "PDA"by Interpol, and I can't hear that song without thinking of that.
Guitar Hero was a big reason I picked up the bass and I learned how to play the drums because of Rock Band, I think it is responsible for a lot of people's entry into music
Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1 soundtrack is seared in my memory. If I hear "Ace of Spades" anywhere, I'm immediately transported to the foundry where I'm terrible at all my tricks.
There is a part of my soul forever trapped in a North Yorkshire family holiday ‘doing’ American Woman by The Guess Who. Whenever I hear it, I am transported back to that dark time.
I recall Dave Gilmour’s observation regarding friends’ kids who had spent so long playing Guitar Hero that, practicing on real instruments, they could have formed a band and gotten somewhere
I love paramore and flyleaf, but I dont think Id have heard of them til years later without Rock Band and I am so glad for it. and thats just the tip of the iceberg
For better or for worse, my college housemate LOVED playing Wonderwall on Rock Band so much that I’ll forever associate hearing the half-baked user-played version of it seeping through the thin walls of my first college house
I am not ashamed to say that my extensive level of cultural knowledge of modern popular rock music was influenced heavily by rock band and guitar hero.
I literally have never heard Avenged Sevenfold's Beauty and the Harlot outside of playing it in Guitar Hero 2 at the kiosk in Wal-Mart's electronics section one day and managing to actually score really well despite never actually owning any of the games. Still stuck with me, though.
There's a special itch scratched whenever I hear the Toadies' "Possum Kingdom" cause of Guitar Hero II and 2006. That itch evolved over time via them also being from Ft Worth and making a bonafide classic in RUBBERNECK. But there's nothing like the plastic clicks and squeaky PS2 sound effects.
hell yeah GH, one time i 100%ed "no one knows" lefty-style (i'm a righty) just to show off at a party—had to face away from the screen and look over my shoulder so the buttons lined up in my brain
to your original point i've heard people say the same about the tony hawk game soundtrack(s?), i never played TH but my version is discovering daptone label artists via an in-game radio station in sleeping dogs (2012)
