What state? I am a poll worker in NC and the rules about registration are indeed confusing. But the Chief Judge (the senior person) should have known or is mandated to call the County Board. No one here gets turned away like that.

You could be right but I will say, the one time I volunteered as a poll watcher in NY, I witnessed some amazingly stupid shit where the poll workers were just plain wrong about the law & procedures, & they refused to believe others who were pointing things out in the rulebook.

If you see something like that on election day talk to a chief judge or call the board of elections. They’ll get a field worker out to correct things. (Or potentially dismiss the offending judge…) We all want things to be done right, but there are a lot of judgement calls in a short time.

We haven't had this problem in my area (that I'm aware of) but thankfully we also have poll watchers whose sole job is to confront anyone turned away, have them put in a provisional ballot, and report it immediately.

So far the poll watchers have only gotten people turned away for electioneering.

In Ohio, voters had until October 7th to fix inactive voter status and registration for this Nov 5th election. Voters must be registered and have active status prior to any elections in Ohio. They did remind the public here multiple times, though. Each state is different.

In New York, today was the last day to update your registration. She can ask them whether her registration can be found, and if not, fill out an affidavit ballot and call the election office in Kings county on Monday to cure her registration.

No one should be turned away from the polls for any reason, at all. If you walk in, say your name is Brockton and you're there for the reptile election, they should be giving you a provisional ballot to do so.

It's not the poll workers job to decide who gets to vote.

In some states (Texas, for example, where I am a poll worker), we are required by law to have both Dem & Rep clerks for primaries, especially. So our site has to have some conservatives we can call for those elections. (I will say every poll watcher we've had this time has been conservative.)

New York City poll workers are in my experience shockingly uneducated about how voting actually works. I personally suspect that it has more to do with it being a short term position often filled by people with no or minimal training than malice. Malice is certainly possible though.
