I guess there are probably executives in the tech and entertainment industries who would say that completely non-ironically, and think of it as sage advice.
what i want is to make artsy bullshit about being a transgender woman who is mentally ill so i'll always be making shit about that fuck having money what about making something to express the inner spirit of yourself
I used to work in games. It costs just as much to produce a game (~$50M) as it does to market the game. We were nearly done with a brilliant original IP and the publisher just cut their losses. I went 11 years without shipping a title.
nah that won't make you much. instead be the executive who makes terrible decisions while people work their butts off to make a decent game anyway, then fire them all and give yourself a bonus.
Meh on the rest. Is anyone REALLY excited for the rest of it?
Retreading the same shit over and over and over? How many different ways can you come up with a storyline for zombies/demons? It's rote memory now and, at least to me, exceptionally boring.
Zombie fairies... maybe.
Great idea! I’m working on a game I’m calling “Resident Hippos” - it’s like “Resident Evil,” but in the style of “Animal Crossing.” There’s nudity like in “BGIII.”
Also sports betting.

Feature creep? Pfff... That's a myth, go big or go home, make it all by yourself so you don't have to share any of the money. You don't even need to learn anything!
I was literally in a company meeting at a game developer (who shall remain nameless) when the CEO got up and announced with some fanfair that the companies new strategy was to focus on only AAA smash hit games! I laughed out loud, everyone looked at me, no one else was laughing.
It was a company with several internal dev houses and I could see the pained expressions on the poor devs faces, they were the ones who would have to make good on this“strategy”. It was all I could do to NOT say, “good thing no one has thought of this plan before!”
This is like when one of my kids suggested I just write a *good* book and sell a lot of them. Wow. Thanks, son. (He was about 8, so didn't realize that was oversimplifying)
Is there a game that does like a sightline perspective shift? If you spot them on screen, you can switch to playing as that character, changing the story & progress. I’m assuming that’s out there, right?
Shout out to flappy bird for making a "smash hit" video game with no monetization. Able to obtain the massive mental health consequences of being famous for a viral game with zero upside.
Apparently so and the creator made copious money from them per Wikipedia so my original comment is wildly incorrect. I had no idea. I knew the creator ended up in a bad place but I thought he wasn't making money from it.
How about instead of that they make the next step forward in game evolution and give us ready played one alternative reality and make Trillions of dollars.

or you could try making something original and unique like HROT, Ultrakill or Cruelty Squad, instead of copying famous games like every other beginner developer does....
You could try to make something original and unique like these two games that are very similar to an entire genre of FPS games in the 90s? What's next, a metroidvania 2d platformer?
Nothing has ever been as obvious in retrospect as when I learned that the formula for business advice books was to be short (because their audiences are not big readers) but not cheaper than a long book (because that would make the advice seen less valuable)
Who Moved My Cheese being the epitome of this strategy, communicating with business majors in the format of children's picture books, which was wildly successful
My god, when that thing came out my bosses bought us all copies and told us to read them.
‘Personal improvement’ initiatives implemented by people who think a ‘popular’ business-focused book drop is the best approach are unlikely to succeed, but those people will never understand why, sadly.
They’re all just trying to get on the “board,” and will cut corners to get on such board rather than polish those corners to be the next breakout game.
People keep saying "The game industry wouldn't be having financial problems if they just made good games" as if "good" were an objective quality easily determined.
I love how a bunch of gaming companies were exposed for plagiarism, top leaders sexually harassing staff, overworking developers, cutting out content to meet an unnecessary deadline for stocks, etc and these companies just continue to exist.

I can give up knowing i did my best.
Try to score more points.
Also stop the other team from scoring points.
Just do that!
Step 1: Acquire a million dollars

“The bottom line isn't looking good, any ideas of how we can improve?”
Silence.
From the back in a small voice, “We could try making… good games??”
Gasps.
“BRILLIANT!”
Cut out the middle man
like literally guys whatever it was that kept you so busy all that time couldn't have been as important as making the #1 game
Fixed that for you.

I swear if book stores created a "self-destruct" section, large swaths of many other sections would get swept up into it. So much B.S. out there.

He really bought those work hammocks.
The devs are getting a little bump but everything is going back into the game.
