reading articles like this always just ends up a surprise about how shallow ppl's ideals are. like, how is she just "capitalism leads to innovation?! well ok it can't be that evil then", how is she not even trying to find out if leftist theory had a response to that?!
like, fine, i had a lot of my vaguely left ideas challenged in my early 20's too, but i didn't just abandon every challenged idea, i looked for what answers to the challenges there were. end-result: i'm now less vaguely leftist, not centrist.
I see, she "bristled" at the outrageous suggestion that she not discriminate against those who clearly needed to be discriminated against
Claims to rampant widespread "woke indoctrination" are always shit like this, statements that ask faculty and students to just be empathetic normal human beings
Really sounds like what they teach at business school is a bunch of talking-point zingers to take those dirty socialists down a notch at cocktail parties
Anyway, I'm just kind of staggered that this woman really thought that there was a space for a kind of "nuanced" freedom of inquiry at UATX, when everyone and their aunt and uncle could see that the "school" was a culture war project from the jump
the fact that a place can just be like "we are actively rejecting long-term sustainability of practices" and not be treated like an unserious clownshow...
I do appreciate that we just leave the apparent free speech being supressed here unsaid. I guess in this case the idea is that education / pedagogical innovation is being hampered by being aware of differential conditions for your students?
Can you imagine being that much of a naive moron and admittingly in public? Kudos (???) to Ellie Avishai for having the self-awareness of a 2 year old.
The only SJW marching orders quoted from the referenced HSGE email are about pledging support for individuals who face discrimination and to uphold values of DEI. So, the rich tapestry of opinion that is lacking here is to not support individuals who face discrimination???
yeah, the oh so censorious pledge literally just amounts to "don't throw marginalised ppl under the bus just cuz trump is president now". if you find that too restrictive the problem really is just you.
It struck me that the ask was to acknowledge groups suffer bc of systemic bias in society. If you don’t believe this, you believe in hierarchy of people and that some groups succeed because they are inherently better, others fail bc they are worse.
"It seemed to us that while the university appreciated the way we were holding a mirror up to educators at other schools, there was little appetite for examining the culture at UATX itself."
As a lifelong Austinite, that UATX makes me ill. If you're from here, you know the whole thing is just an exercise in "owning the libs" by putting a giant right-wing turd in the punch bowl of the liberal oasis that is Texas' capital city. A bad joke, doomed to fail.
Austin has become a primary target of Republicans. They want to "conquer" it. Just look at who is here now: Elon Musk, Joe Rogan, Alex Jones, Tony Hinchcliffe, etc. etc.. It's a concerted effort to destroy what Austin has always been about-- freedom to be who you want to be. Drives Republicans nuts.
They call themsleves "libertarians" but they are really big money fascists who want a very undiverse, uninclusive, ungay, unliberal Austin as their own playground.
I notice there’s no mention of what she thinks causes unequal outcomes if it’s not systemic bias, weird that she doesn’t exercise the intellectual freedom to say it
"is is ok for hypergreedy corporations to exist if they develop lifesaving product???" is such a stupid fucking take. take a look at the pharmaceutical industry and how millions die bc of med costs.
harvard, let me in, let me cook, i promise i can think further ahead than two feet in front of me
literally we just had the covid crisis prove that innovation comes from public funding and involving private interests makes it worse by limiting access to the innovation. but she got baffled by the cheapest pro-cap propaganda anyway. embarrassing.

If the vulnerable are priced out of the market, then yes
"Is protectionism good if it leads to higher prices for consumers and bankrupts farmers [...]?"
Is free trade good if it leads to depressed wages and lost jobs?
Staggering to think that any human being is actually this credulous.
Also, just informed my professor wife that, unbeknownst to her, she is a Communist
Yeah. No.
I almost died of second-hand embarrassment reading that
Ellie isn't very bright, is she.
Also, Go Roos.
I'm guessing some of Bari Weiss's friends are being too obvious.
"Why are there so many Nazis around me?"
Also, before anyone calls me out for saying that, here's me...
Harvard should revoke her degree
Her stunning lack of any critical thinking is shocking.
