Seriously.
IME, most people will like the little effort, even if it sucks lol
Something like thai, in particular, you will *never* get right. Don't sweat it.
One of the main things was learning that you order gin by the 'copa', which is an absurd amount
(people also mostly nice in those cities but the tourist slam is real, esp kyoto. speaking japanese helps a LOT to defuse that)
And that has worked pretty well!

The one time I was traveling & a German guy spoke to me in German first (before switching to English, because I’m American) i found it really surprising. And charming.
really the bar is on the floor, just be civil
They piss us off, too.
every nation has some flavor of Those People
The worst moment was a busload of American students at the Golden Temple in Kyoto. It had been so peaceful and then it wasn’t.
I travelled a lot during the Bush years, and despite all the "they hate us" discourse, i never had any trouble.
Fit right in.
Also, I've gotten really good at apologizing in Thai, lol
BTW I said I love New Yorkers & other E coasters- that takes my tally to a little over 6 I think...
First was an American student studying in China, who saw a homeless old lady (yes, there are many in China) and offered her his water and food
