He was a good dude, and was never not delighted to meet Engineers he inspired.
I am certain, as an engineer in the US, that I get a 40% bonus for having a Scottish accent. And wearing a red shirt.
Nichelle Nichols took her role and span it to NASA where she became a hugely influential recruiter for them, and if you don't know the MLK story, look it up.
The Trek Folk are pretty much always cool, at least the ones I met!
Clue-by-four: Who is the one not showing respect to alcoholics?
was the name Scotchy already taken?
we also love heroin, and food that will make your heart explode at age 50
Which suggests he might have had worse attempts at other nationalities.
'The character of Montgomery Scott mostly originated from James Doohan himself. Doohan was asked by Director James Goldstone... to come in and read a few lines from the script of TOS: "Where No Man Has Gone Before" ... The role he was proposed for was an unnamed Chief Engineer...'
So yeah that all does sound extremely yikes-y.

Also here's a doctor with Irish heritage.
His name is McCoy.
He is also an alcoholic, with anger issues and a racism streak.
Bones has a drink in his hand more often than Scotty :)
You'd drink too.
SNW feels hobbled by already established canon.
And, that was one of the character building episodes they gave her that season.
So I've got this character who's a tree...I'll call him. Erm. Treebeard, I guess. Yeah. That'll do fine.
(by the way, I love Scotland very much, it was one of my favourite places to ever visit and the Scottish people are the very absolute best)
Fantastic city though, loved visiting.
So the main characters are the captain, who’s a white American with a Scottish surname, and the chief surgeon, a white American with an Irish surname, and an alien dude. …
And there’s a Scottish engineer, and the white nurse with an English surname. And there’s an Irish lieutenant who causes trouble sometimes.
Oh, and we’ve got one African and one Asian-American.
They probably couldn’t have gotten away with more Black characters, but they could certainly have had characters from other parts of Europe then just the UK.
I can’t imagine the executives making a fuss if Nurse Chapel had been, say, Nurse Delacroix instead.
There's a second page, but it wasn't relevant to what we were talking about.
Lots of people see Riker as the villain in the Enterprise portions of that episode because he was a snotty little shit.
I aspire to be the man Admiral Jellico is.
That's just your personal interpretation 🤷🏼♂️
