My introduction to #booksky I guess?
📚 Reading is political
🎧 Audiobooks count as reading
📖 Reading is not a competition
🤔 Reading critically & reading for fun are not mutually exclusive
👉 If you support problematic authors, you deserve to be called out on it
🚫 Toxic positivity can eff off

Aristotle.
Hubert Selby.
Dante.
“Problematic.”
And obviously everyone decides for themselves what is problematic. There is no committee.
I for one refuse to give JK a single penny.
I dislike the books for being derivative, unoriginal, cobbled together myths, legends and copies of ideas from other authors of fantasy & RPGs
IF, hypothetically, I had HP merch I wouldn’t throw it away. But I wouldn’t buy new stuff
And reading is amazing
Is Faulkner problematic?
Is Hemingway problematic?
Is Kipling problematic?
Is Poe problematic?
Obviously, I'm dubious about the criteria.
By fawning over their works you keep them relevant and encourage them.
Quite obvious and basic logic.
Is it ok for you to directly support someone that in turn actively opposes and harms people you care about?
Is that different from involuntary, indirect support to someone you don’t know about deep down the hidden supply chain?
1 for Work
1 for Fun
1 that's too darned hard
1 that I expect to disagree with
Regardless listening to audio books is 100% valid.
Thank you for your support.
Could have stayed beloved if they’d just not gone out of their way to hurt other people.
I can, and do, occasionally reread my HP books that I've had for decades. But goddamn, Robert Galbraith is a piece of 💩. I will never support their work financially again. Trash human.
As if not buying that little keychain would make anything to those multimillionaires.
Telling someone grieving or depressed they should smile and be happy is toxic. It denies them their right to the full scale of emotions and demands a fake façade of positivity.

I strongly disagreed til the day he died. Reading for escape is absolutely 100% valid.
I keep track with a spreadsheet, not really for numbers, but to keep track of what I've read, sequels I need to read when they are released, authors I enjoy, etc. 😊
censors can eff off
Genuine question.
I don’t think they understood the critical reading part of the post either based on this.
Monetary support on the other hand is not something I do for problematic authors. You ask for critical reading, how about critical writing also? Where to stop?
your fav genre.
The Monsters We Defy
Bindle Punk Bruja
Hell’s Library Trilogy
The Inheritance Trilogy
Wr will see an increase in book bans that align curricula with conservative values, at the cost of suppressing intellectual freedom, critical thinking, and diverse perspectives in schools and libraries.
Added bonus: being able to modify the playback speed, etc.
It's kind of bananas (but rad!) how different our book consumption needs are.
Problematic Authors?
This all sounds pretty subjective and divisive. I taught Literature/Philosophy for over 30 years, which mostly consisted of banned books. When you ban ideas, you ban context and complexity. Ideas do not exist in a vacuum. There is no happiness w/o sadness.
Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian is still important to Read
Orion Scott Card Problematic
Ender’s Game and Speaker for the Dead are absolutely important books
Harry Potter - Do not buy new!
I won’t even type her name, she is so vile!
Aristotle was problematic.
And what does any of what you said have to do with toxic positivity?
If you are unfamiliar with that discourse, that’s totes fine! No need to be hostile! 🙂

I cuddle in my favorite chair with a cup of tea and start to read with zero concern with any of that nonsense.
Wait.. people think audiobooks is reading?
Also plan to read Kurt Vonnegut one of these days .
