I've started seeing big shiny ads pushing VR headsets at Christmas shoppers, and it was striking that they described two uses: the ability to function as a big screen for watching movies, and single-player VR video games.
Nothing memorable about interacting with other people, let alone a Metaverse.
I remember the "this is how you shop in the metaverse" video where you go into a store and you had to pantomime putting things in a shopping cart adding extra steps to online shopping. It's making a solution to a problem absolutely no one was having.
I'm sitting on a vast swath of meta land for a yet to be developed meta gated seniors retirement subdivision. Lenders won't go near me, I'm kinda screwed.
Only because a girl on the reality tv show Winter House said this was her job. A Metaverse real estate agent. That fact is forever stuck in my brain now.
Then they had those cringey Atlas Earth ads all over the place. Like they'd really broken major ground. As if there wasn't already a problem of actual real estate agents signing up people for real mortgages for virtual properties in Second Life.
Anytime someone says generative AI art is the future and it will be there whether we like it or not I must remind them of the dozens of tech that is not here anymore because it sucks and is lame
That's because while the time difference netwneen SL and Metaverse may be forever in tech years, in normal business years it was well within memory, and so skepticism was a thing...
Jail is probably too harsh, but I think if you write an article this bad and uncritical of an obvious scam you should probably at least have to do community service and I’m not kidding
It’ll never be not funny that mark zuckerberg was so into this idea he renamed his entire company around it and sunk personal billions into trying to make it happen, and all that came out the other side was “second life but shitty”
i read a murder mystery where the victim hid millions of dollars from the government by buying land in the metaverse and decorating the walls with NFTs of famous paintings. just absolute baby-brained bullshit
yeah but you got to admit the meta food is amazing and The meta medical treatment is off the charts cool. if the screams of your starving children bother you the meta noise cancelling headphones are the bomb
This only existed because all the “metaverse” and “nft” people were sucking each other off on Twitter - definition of an echo chamber. And NYT drank the koolaid
This reminded me to check and see if he'd made an account here. Turns out the answer is yes and he's still suffering through the horrid UI of junk like this so we don't have to.
It's worth thinking about why Zuckerberg and then the entire business press tried to make the metaverse a thing, it wasn't just collective madness, it represented big tech and those around it desperately casting about for a new revenue stream after two decades of failure.
No joke, you could hear the cogs turning in the investor class's heads. This is a great new way to deal with Blackrock owning all the housing - the plebs can pay us to rent virtual status symbols.
Have to say I hadn't put self driving in the same category because it was too "real world" but yes, it was hyped to hell despite having the hardest problem to solve (effectively general, not generative, AI) and no chance of surveillance capitalism level returns even if the problem was solved.
Media companies don't know what they are talking about. They have no skin in the game, no investors to answer to, no capital to commit. All they do is farm attention and engagement. Rule of a thumb would be to do the exact opposite of what they have to advise their audience to do in the short run.
You could easily google up dozens of research papers on the subject. One of the most notable would be covering Jim Cramer and his little show. Don't be offended by them tho, but be skeptical of everything they say and you will do just fine for yourself.
My conspiracy theory is that they did this not because of the metaverse but because “Facebook data” was such a toxic term when people searched it, but “meta data” is such a common term it won’t surface info on data leaks.
Plus separates the brand Facebook which is dying from the company.
Wahoo, more abstractions of the concept of money! That's totally what we need more of, not, you know, getting rid of investors entirely with employee ownership

That means it gets attention first.
When you post an image of test you disagree with you should edit the image itself
person in that picture is more likely to be playing candy crush than logging on to check out the latest starbucks ad in the metaverse lol
