First two questions would be define “quality” and define “popular”. Popular might be the easier one as just a threshold of likes and/or reposts.
Quality is a tough nut to crack because I assume its definition is qualitatively different than popular.

They have an extension, as others pointed out, which is feeds. They are trying to offload algorithm costs to independent operators.

However it’s quite expensive to run and maintain a feed over the whole network. Not possible for individual developers :(

The “popular with friends” feed is good at this but I feel has been getting a bit worse for me, discover is fun but in a chaotically uncoordinated kinda way. Needs something closer to the feeling of how Reddit’s “hot” feeds work.

It’s the one thing that Threads does well if you interact enough on that site. My algorithmic feed there is basically a following feed that isn’t completely chronological. But you have to train it like that, and it’s way too much effort to do it.

I’m a n00b here, so I may be wrong, but I thought part of the deal with BSky is there are multiple algo feeds. Click on the “#” in the upper right of the mobile app, and you can see featured feeds, and search for custom ones. I think you can add as many as you want.

People are trying to host customized feeds for non-eng people but you can imagine the options are sort of limited.

However if you are an eng, they do provide a way to develop a full blown feed.

Popular with Friends is a good compliment to Following, as it's based on it but surfaces the most popular things follows have posted as well as popular things they've liked and shared. Nothing thrown in from randoms.
