To an extent yes
The problem is the format
It's too professional in it's layout for the needs of a community
It's also not user-friendly for specific individuals or groups
I don't fully disagree here.
The group forums could be pretty great for a community. The comment section could absolutely be better. And UI could be better in a lot of places, but the point remains - it already exists. It might be easiee to build up on what's there than to just start from nothing.
I get it and agree but the main reason it won't work is that it's just too niche
Like the difference of a museum/art gallery vs a mall/community center
It just doesn't offer as much of a wide range for everyone and the folks who need it most, won't get their needs met
Yes, I think so. But, I am hinting here to BlueSky to allow some flexibility. There are groups of us scattered on various social sites that I think would like it here. Tools to help that cause would be awesome too!
Bluesky has the wrong format
It works perfectly for X replacement but can't match the feel of IG or community of FB
It's not just the emotional "feel" either
IG/FB function differently and with more options that this format can't meet
Not counting Bluesky, the best options I can think of:
- Flickr: if willing to pay, otherwise limited features/number of photos
- Pixelfed: web-based, ActivityPub-using Instagram clone; same pros/cons as Mastodon, plus app still in beta
- A blog: not as convenient, but you'll own the platform
That’s fair and I understand that. I had no stake in that part of tumblr but I would be put off at that as well if it was a big portion of my content. It’s still a shit show over there but it’s our shit show.
It’s the one social media site I’ve been loyal to. I’ve had the same tumblr since my freshman year of high school in 08. It’s a shitshow but I love it.
Artists desperately need one. One that protects from Ai or scraping. The threat of lawsuits from broken TOS is the only thing that will stave off that second thing.
I used to post a lot of my DSLR photos on IG until it went to the dumps. I just signed up for Bluesky this week and so far I have more joy posting my photos on here than on IG in the past year.
I have one partly developed and have been asking around to see if anyone wants to create an instagram replacement but as an employee owned non profit run organization. It would take hefty up front funding but it could monetize with subscriptions. As long as all get paid a good living wage.
It wouldn’t be for selling data would be a friends, family and followers focused algorithm. Maybe ad revenue to cover costs for people who don’t want to subscribe. Nothing excessive, it wouldn’t have to be. Only has to break even each year with enough to grow.
Maybe the folks at @usworkercoops.bsky.social can help you think about it. If it was a worker-owned and managed enterprise, it may have a greater foundation for more productive and satisfied employees. There's an interesting metastudy that found ownership plus participation boosts productivity.
A lot of creators have been moving their stuff to cara, but the problem is it's artist centered, which means less ability to find regular old non-artistic people to promote and sell your stuff to... 🤷
Has Hive improved beyond when it first exploded in popularity due to Elon taking over Twitter? It was a bit under baked and drained a lot of battery on phones but seemed like it might have potential.
you would think that there would be one out already for fb and ig with all that bs we have to deal with by being on these platforms … but nope, nothing ..i don’t get it, hello techies? any takers?
Tumblr is so weird because the platform died when they ended their problematic relationship with porn only to have other platforms recreate the tumblr without porn and go huge with it..
i think tiktok (yeah, weird, but it does allow for photos and carousels/slideshows even though the general layout is bad) and snapchat (for stories) are the most well established, though... they're both far from ideal as photo galleries/portfolios :T
Also I’m not a creator -but I am a reader if you are promoting your work ?- I’m always interested in finding new authors- I’m sure there are lots of displaced readers from insta that are interested
Sorry, I didn't have people buying books and Instagram users on the same venn diagram, my bad. I ran away screaming years ago after it became a yawning hellscape of thirst traps. 🤷🏻♂️
I think one of the funky things about bluesky being on the At protocol is that someone can build an Instagram-equivalent (or improvement, rather) and have it be interoperable with bluesky etc. Alternatively, someone could build a bluesky client that has extra features for images etc. I think 🤷🏻♂️
I like the idea of bluesky doing other apps that can tie together
But would need to mirror the better aspects of FB and IG
TikTok is just weird, like some lovechild of IG and Myspace
Wondering the same. Filing away people's suggestions. I have a long neglected Tumblr and used to have a Flickr account, so long ago that it was another life.
This is it for now. I think Snapchat can work for TikTok replacement if they extend post times and allow post to either be deleted or saved. Dealer’s choice.
The problem is that the only way for any of these sites to gain any sort of traction is to have a long term plan to turn into a hellsite. No one has yet figured out how to make a viable social media site business without being a total shitheel.
(And I’m including Bluesky in this - it’s not a viable business at the minute, and they’re burning funding to keep the lights on - there are only two outcomes; they die, or they enshittify it.)
I guess it depends on your definition of social media. It's a community-based website where people interact with each other, so imo it counts, even if it's small.
I think it's a great example of a website that has enjoyed success without anyone losing their soul.
The entire rest of the offline world? I used to wake up and spend an hour checking Instagram before I did anything else, now I use that time to read or exercise
We left Etsy due to super high fees and built our own website. I closed all other media accounts except Bluesky. I love it here, but i do sometimes wish I could add more photos or text on a single post.
Thanks for letting me know. I am just trying it. I’ve heard it is expensive. I sell through interior designers locally but need to expand some and I closed my IG yesterday.
A touch of assumptions mixed with ableism showing in your comment
Do some research
There are multiple reasons why people authentically need IG and or FB
I’m just as happy to keep photos of my real persona private with family and friends. I look pretty darn good for my age mind you… but no need to have to be always in some selfie… at some restaurant… at some concert… in some bathroom… lol
Has anyone tried Neptune? I've heard of it, but honestly don't even know how it works. I loved being able to post content AND go live on Instagram. Now I'm trying to split that between here, Patreon, and YouTube. Would love to hear other suggestions of what platform could combine both like IG does.
I've been making my own feeds using Skyfeed to give me tabs for every little niche thing I'm into. There's an option to use images only and it feels just like Insta.
My boyfriend has signed up to Pixelfed but he says there's no one there. I have never heard anyone but him talk about it so I have no idea if it has good potential.
I have no idea what an image browse function is, but is it text based on Instagram or is it AI that analyses what's in the image? People can always add keywords to an image when they post and then it could be searched or found, and a specific function to do that could be added...

Also, Foto is in beta, but I've been using it for months now and it's basically like old IG minus the filters.
The community that is there, it's very specific
Flickr right now is a sausagefest. I don't participate in it much at all. But if all our photography pals at IG come on over, the community changes.

Honestly not trying to be a contrarian pain in the bum squirter

Make BlueSky truly 0pen as intended.
I get the most interaction here, but I set up portfolios of my work on Cara that I can send links to, which is helpful.
As far as if people want to host personal photos to share with friends and family, that one is still up in the air.
Which as an art nude photographer is like 85% of what I shoot.
Not going back no matter how much they’ve reversed course.
Cara upon the other hand is were I get a lot more attention, same with Bluesky.
Truly weird
But I might do that.

Come on now! It’s… it’s….
I want to say great, but I can’t remember those 3 weeks of my life…
. If you’re being watched, your followers can actually see your stuff. None of this “snowball rolling downhill” BS where only 10% can see your posts.
Plus their recent que post upgrade has been a godsend.
I'm still refining it and inputting metadata! (Clearly I also need to fix the SEO stuff 😅)

Or you know, not.
Nobody really cares. The age of FOMO is a collective, narcissistic delusion.
Break. The. Spell.
Allowing the immoral turning of people into product is the top one.
Turning vast numbers of creators and small businesses into dependent and powerless vassals of an online monopoly is not far behind.
But would need to mirror the better aspects of FB and IG

Support independent decentralized social media.

I’m still there and never left.
And its daily user base (less than 2M) is tiny compared to Bluesky at the minute, so their costs are fractional in comparison.
I think it's a great example of a website that has enjoyed success without anyone losing their soul.
It should be publicly funded and run, preferably through a consortium of libraries, with librarians at the wheel.
The “town square” should belong to all of us. Along with its records.
The investors… they might not be on the same page. No-one who has dumped millions into this is going to be happy with a ‘public works’ ROI.
I would love to see a concerted effort to create a publicly funded competitor. Then we can let the free market decide.

I can’t do TikTok (the UI is akin to 90s computer viruses), so eagerly awaiting what comes next.
Not using Instagram is the Instagram replacement 😁 I quit & deleted the app months ago and I am so glad all the time

I'd also love for this place to add image posting in DMs.
It's the ONLY thing I use Instagram for these days.
(Unfortunately I have a handful of friends that I only stay in touch with via Instagram or Facebook, so I still have private accounts on them)
…anyone?
You can post images here.
