One thing I realize about “The Emperor’s New Clothes” is that in real life, the crowd wouldn’t suddenly wake up from their delusion after the little boy spoke up. They would hate the little boy.
It sounds like you have picked up a bit of cynicism over the years. No judgement here...cynicism seems to be a natural aspect of the growth process. But I could be reading too much into life.
See, the issue is that fairy tales were designed to raise awareness about issues such as children being eaten by witches, but it required comprehensive reform to how dark forests full of supernatural beings were managed to drive down these sorts of incidents.
One problem is we have been immersed in books, movies, tv series, video games, etc., glorifying monarchy for our entire lives. The theme is the battle of benevolent & tyrannical dictatorship.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court boiled us like lobsters, replacing citizenship with subjection.
That’s because people don’t read fables & fairy tales anymore. They believe them to be “silly stories for kids” when in fact they were cautionary tales for adults! The Grimm Brothers, Perrault, Andersen, Marchen, etc. were for adults, but were given to kids as time went.
I've hypothesized that the inventions of the very brightest of us from the past 200 years have interfered with the natural order of evolution. A lot more people make it through childhood that otherwise wouldn't have.
i'm one of the people who would have died in childhood if it hadn't been for modern inventions, so now i'm really curious what you think should happen to people like me to restore "natural order". maybe my parents should have left me in the woods to die like our ancestors did with their sickly kids?
No, from the evolutionary view, no one would survive if their parents weren't minimally fit to take care of them. This is more about how advances in tech have facilitated being moron and still not only survive but also have a greater chance at procreation. Google replaced memorization
Every person in every generation has to learn everything from the beginning. That’s why humanity continues as a work in progress and never gets to the end of the story. In fact, humanity has hardly progressed past the first paragraph, imo.
Statistically as a participant it shouldn't be this unexpected to discover you're actually just one of the innumerable hapless townspeople who are now stuck spending the foreseeable future turned into a doorknob or something.
Same. We grew up knowing good from bad, fair from unfair and that the good would prevail. It was in all the books and the movies. Yet so many people chose bad.
My daughter found an old Grimes fairytale book and it was not for children! In Cinderella one step sister cut off part of her foot to fit the slipper. All the tales are quite scary.
Ah, but therein lies the problem. Most folk tales were originally told as cautionary tales, not lessons. It was the Brothers Grimm who sanitised them for children. However, right back to ancient Greece, theatre WAS education.
When i studied Chinese, 1 recurring assignment was to write narrative w/ 4 illustrations as the prompt. Sometimes the 4th image was upsetting & it forced me to realize that non-happy endings is culturally atypical or even taboo for most American storytelling.
And for those who don't read, one would think the movies based on books by authors such as C. S. Lewis, J. R. R.Tolkien, Suzanne Collins, and J. K. Rowling would have taught them something.
See, the problem is, people stopped reading GRIMM's fairy tales and started reading Mother Goose or Disneyified versions of Grimm's. In the originals, if you fucked around, you found out, and sometimes that meant staying eaten.
Comprehension is not a flower that blossoms in every garden. The ingredients for success will be present, but will be rejected under a plethora of circumstances.
It’s all sound bites. R’s are great at it. They know their (stupid) audience. They either use an ad to show something those ppl like or fear. End of story. No policy. No true details. Just emotional bites to move ppl in their direction. We should use it too.
Now Ii know why more than one teacher told me as I was forced out of a public high school..."You're ruining your life." I had no idea it began in Sunday school.
It’s one thing to fall back on old toxic habits when things don’t go your way. It’s another to be outright dismissive of what millions of people have to go through daily just to earn what you take for granted, and you vote to make their lives even worse because you think you are the “victim.”
Not all parents read to their kids. You can tell just based on my own life how different that makes my husband and I when it comes to reading. He was never encouraged to read. I got books every Christmas to read over the summer. I can't share any of my favorite books with him. 😞 Zero interest.
Before Nov 5 I thought the story of the frog and the scorpion was something Kamala should consider RE: Liz Cheney. But in tRump's "government" it looks like everyone is a scorpion & even if WE didn't give them a ride across the river, we'll still be getting stung.
The only education most Americans understand comes via fear, loss, or a 2x4 across the forehead. We are not a rational society, and historically, the times we demonstrate being rational is when we suffer significant losses or fear of drastic change is facing us.
Remember it took four seasons of “the boys” for maga to realize that it was calling them out. I think it’s not so much the lack of stories. I think it is that too many people have main character syndrome and take the wrong lessons.
I think about this a lot. Also about Aesop's Fables, that great teacher of sensible lessons on reasonable social responses. Very little is reasonable in the times we approach. To start with the crowd, it seems a majority did not notice the emperor has no clothes.
It really does a disservice imho. The notion that one day people learn their lessons and change as a result, that we all mature eventually, good always triumphs over evil, our bullies eventually get what's coming to them etc. Maybe we should drop the American children's stories and make the dark,
imagine fairy tales that better reflect the real world, where characters repeatedly make mistakes and proceed to not learn from them
It’s like Curb Your Enthusiasm but with elves
Those of us who can actually think and not just feel are at first bewildered by people who actually do not think, just react to feelings they've been programmed with. It's an awakening for us first, and I guess we have to figure out how to awaken everyone else into thinking instead of feeling.
I agree. I've come to the conclusion that the lack of literacy and critical thinking skills in the majority of people -- especially men -- in the USA is going to do to the USA exactly what such circumstances have done to other third world countries led by religious fanatics.

Seriously! People who voted for #Trump & think we're all just gonna be okay with that are finding out. Divorces, lifelong friends, boyfriends, girlfriends, kids, grandkids, parents, grandparents, friends, acquaintances, coworkers...you're relationships are very likely over for good if you...
actually voted to hurt your loved ones. I know as far as I'm concerned it's that way. I'm never going to have anything to do with people who voted for him.
Oh & he's going to try to get rid of #ACA, #ChipsAct, #PactAct, and the #infrastructure bills! They are going to try to take away ...
#marriage #equality, ban care for #transgender adults, ban #abortion & get rid of #SocialSecurity & #Medicare! That has been the wet dream of Republicans forever! If you've got grandparents or parents who are not wealthy, you better figure out where you are going to put them & how you are...
going to pay for their doctor appointments, medicines, etc. You did this to yourself but what's worse is you did it to all of us. Now you think we're just gonna accept all this? I just don't think many people are going to do that. You were told this wasn't just any election. By the way, you're...
really going to be sorry too. If you're not yet. He's going to hurt ALL of us but there's only ever been one person he cares about & that's himself & you were told that too.

Parents too. Teaching my childhood self not to cheat, lie or be disrespectful then voting for the shitstain who is so corrupt that calling him a disrespectful cheating liar is the nicest thing can be said.
Goofus and Gallant from Highlights alone. There should be non stop reruns of Father Knows Best and Leave It To Beaver 24/7 on all channels until people learn morals and ethics and civics again.
And that people would learn these lessons from mistakes which they would, forever more, cease making. But alas. Same mistakes - over & over & over. (Sigh. I’m tired of our penchant for reruns.)
I've been eyeballing the message behind simple but not so simple Rudolph the Reindeer for quite some time. The red nose was a curse that eventually became a blessing but....
I noticed early on, people don't learn from mistakes. They repeat them endlessly. Amount of times I said to people, if you want a different answer, change the equation.

Perhaps it’s just that the tale isn’t over. It’s just time for the next book in the series…

We have learned nothing from those fairy tales.
Nothing.

Tolkien was right.
Are the readers the ones who are mostt disappointed in (waves vaguely) all this?
They’ll just keep making a profit by renewing the old titles again and again!

Some people have to walk all the way to the end.
And still, no imminent threat of quicksand.
Grimes fairy tale wicked witch..
No one has learnt a Damn thing...
I never thought Pottersville from "It's A Wonderful Life" would be a desirable outcome but folks on the right think it's great.
I'll take Bedford Falls... the place more like Biden/Harris' America.
Fairy tale: I must be wrong
Real world: Everyone else must be wrong

Fairies will take you. Mess with you.
In fact, they're still here. Only, we call them aliens or UFOs nowadays.
