the basic logic of personalist authoritarians means that musk is almost certainly going to be among the first of trump's lieutenants shanked by trump--precisely because he has his own money and power and doesn't depend on trump. tall poppies get cut first.

I saw a comment on a different post this AM that makes a lot of sense. Musk, who has personally called putin multiple times recently, is Vlad's eyes and ears. It's why trump has to tolerate him. Musk may be iced by Vlad, but it seems unlikely T has the standing to whack a made man

Musk isn't there at Trump's pleasure; it's the other way around. Even if Musk vanished, the broligarchs still own the WH.

I don't doubt there is going to be a power struggle, I'm not so sure about the outcome. Putin won his war on the oligarchs, he'll probably share his experiences with whom he sees fit at any given moment.

The power relationships are very different:

1. Putin didn't need the oligarchs to become President of Russia. They didn't make him--he made them by doling out the spoils of the crumbling USSR.

2. Trump is owned by the broligarchs: not just Musk, but P Thiel & D Sacks, who forced JD Vance as VP.

Respectfully, w/o credential measuring, I think 1st statement here has been and would be disputed by the academic experts on this historical question. Separately, I suggest that office of U.S. President confers a lot of power and that DJT's support networks far exceed this subset.

The other misunderstanding is that, right now, there's no power struggle. Musk/Techbros and Trump are getting along swimmingly with mutual benefit. It's when a leader feels the need to consolidate their inner circle to eliminate potential threats to their absolute power that things get Long Knifey.
