Here on #MLKday2025. He is a role model for all of us today, both a refuge and an inspiration. #Bluesky has taken on that role of refuge for millions. I expect to find inspiration here too! Let's make this garden grow.
Trump ticket sales were only 220k. His crowd would have looked tiny in comparison and that's why he pulled the outdoor ceremony. Wonder if any of those cancelled tickets can be redeemed for money. Doubt it ! Suggestions that they are 'commemorative' tickets.
And his speech brings tears to my eyes & saddens me when I look at what’s happening to our Country & Democracy!
But We Will Never Forget MLK & We Will Remember to Fight
for What’s Right!
And yet only one of them - the one who dedicated his life to humanity and spoke of civil rights, justice and equality for people of color is the one who served time. Our two-tier judicial system at work.
My Dad sent MLK a letter once;
Our congregation was calling MLK communist,
how to speak 2 them.
Southern Minister defending Him!
Letter is in the MLK Library in Washington.
Sent by Thomas M. Ward of Versailles, Kentucky.
My Dad was asking advice.
Apparently MLK got shot before he could respond.
The word should be Traitor.
Apparently you are ignorant of the fact that the USA has more folks locked up than any other free country?
Got stocks in private prisons, Hoodlum?
Just curious.
As a non-violent drug former felon that Cali wanted to put me away for life for smoking medical Cannabis?
Decades ago…
Am grateful for Joe Biden’s pardons,
(Not that any should have needed them!)
Be careful how you throw the word Felon around.
Ever use Cannabis in an illegal state?

Today We Honor M.L. King American Equal Rights Advocate For The Constitutional Rights Of Non-White Americans And Against Gov. Policies Suppressing Them! Today Trump/GOP Plan To Remove All Americans Constitutional Rights, Gov. Protections And Bankrupt Americans Into Fascist Submission/Control !!
As a young teen I was taken to a church in Philly by my pastor to hear Dr.King speak. I think he and I were the only whites there. It was amazing. He got a huge welcome and held the congregation in the palm of his hand with his wonderful words. Early 1960s.
You know similar critiques of MLK were made at the time to undermine him by the very same people. Same playbook.
FBI Reports: The FBI recorded audio and gathered reports of King engaging in extramarital relationships, which they attempted to use to blackmail him or tarnish his reputation.
He spoke and carried himself so eloquently.
We must not standby and let our country be destroyed.
We should not overact, but enforce the laws that have held our nation together all of tues years.
Hate to rain on these rose-coloured glasses… but real change only came after his assassination caused race riots…
respect is what got people motivated to side with him, and he should be admired for it, but violence is what convinced the government to listen to him…
He wasn't entirely wrong was he? Riots are not all the same. Some riots are carried out by naturally violent people. Some are by those who are traumatised by oppression and those are the ones that make rulers listen.
I don't think he's primarily claiming that riots work as a tactic, but rather that riots are more understandable once you realize the causes (irrespective of whether they work).
This is not actually true, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed 4 years before his death, and there's a good argument that the riots of 1968 broke any chance of meaningfully reforming the US on racism, because so many moderates hated the riots and voted for Nixon.
It passed in 1964, it was only enforced 1968, see the orangeburg massacre, schoolboards opposed and ignored it well into the early 1970s they were theoretically officially free 4years before MLK passed, practically they still had to endure segregation for years after his passing…
MLK’s protests only worked because they successfully goaded the other side into violence. He sought out violent towns to turn his protestors into martyrs. Malcolm X was also important for the rights’ movement. Unfortunately, change never happens without bloodshed. Peace alone isn’t effective.
Because you assume the other side wasn't already being violent? That lynchings, individual and mob attacks to enforce segregation laws and perpetuate terrorism weren't already going on? Read what actually happened. He wasn't "goading" them into violence the movement was refusing to cower to it.
You’re reading into it too deep. I’m saying that he was intentional with where he chose to hold his protests because he knew that white people needed to see black kids doing nothing but sitting there being hurt to care in the slightest. People in power will ignore silent and peaceful protests.
Yes, very intentional about locations. All white people were in power over Black people. With lynching and other brutality as the norm, seeing Black people hurting for doing nothing but sitting there was typical "fun." It was the disruption and exposure outside the area that hurt most.
My focus on the “doing nothing” was because it removed the ability for the media to portray them as inciting the violence. MLK was incredibly intelligent in how he handled his protests to support the cause. However, the argument of peace driving civil rights is a product of education erasing other—
MLK (and the whole huge civil rights movement of leaders, advocates, it wasn't just him) chose to expose the horrific violence that was already tormenting them by not responding with violence (and allowing them to become the scapegoats), thereby exposing it to the world.
Also, activism for civil rights didn't start with MLK, he was also taking his inspiration from those who came before him and worked with him. Certainly he scanned the world for insight, but it is useful to have some context on the movement's history and leadership, not just MLK.
He was an African-American man who centered his fight for his people, and expanded it to justice for all people. He explicitly including Palestinian people as deserving. If he didn't advocate harm towards white people, why would he support it against Palestinians?
History will remember this time as another dark age. When technological advancement began to slow as civilization turned inward on itself. Fragmenting into groups obsessed with the meaningless question, what is the gender and color of the lint in my naval?
Perhaps because change needs its Martyrs and MLK certainly brought much needed change to shake things up and shake people out of their ignorance and apathy. He started a movement but it is up to all is up to all of us to carry on the mantle so his Dream becomes an ever lasting reality.
We do need “men” like MLK in our society today…the misconception of being a bully makes you masculine is a lie…call it what it is…for all their efforts to make others look small only makes them look smaller…
I do honor him and I am glad the Me Too and Social Justice marauders were not around then. They would have brought him down like they have so many recently, men who were flawed but achieved good things many people.
My 6 yo and I listened to MLK’s I Have a Dream and talked about the things we can do to work towards equality for all. He’s a little guy but he gets it.
The man who fought for uniting, not dividing.
Love not hate.
Justice for all, not the few.
He was a true American hero.
We celebrate this extraordinary man today!
Seriously? Let’s have a national day of celebration for the confederacy’s greatest loss at the battle of Gettysburg. It happened July 1 to 3, so it dovetails nicely with our Declaration of Independence.

These brave individuals deserved their Presidential Pardon. I appreciate what President Biden did before he left the presidency. Thank you Mr. President
Have to reorient my brain to remember that we’re not starting from freedom of expression anymore—we’re starting from how not to get caught exercising freedom of expression.
It seemed like many were waiting for a charismatic politician who would speak to their hate, embrace it, support it and cultivate it. Once the bargain was reached, they would do anything for him…..kind of like the devil 🍊. Welcome to America January 20, 2025.
That could of not been said better. Just a bit more of an add on, a Felon who should be serving time in PRISON and not completing his failed mission to ruin our Nation.

Smart strong women rule 👑
On the same day, unfortunately, America returns to power a hate mongering racist and bigot, convicted felon and adjudicated rapist.
Dark days ahead.

We celebrate this extraordinary man today!
There comes a time when the cup of endurance runs over, and [hu]men are no longer willing to be plunged into the abyss of despair.”

Wouldn't that be crazy?
I find it interesting how many hated Dr. King and also Jimmy Carter, but now give them acclaim. How we forget our own bad judgments.
