I find 2010 to be superior in every important way. And Helen Mirren as a frizzy-haired astronaut! Also, I didn't know Bob Balaban was supposed to be Indian. Oh, well. That opening scene with Roy Scheider typing on a computer at the beach -- prescient much?
the thing about that scene that always gets me is that he’s typing on an Apple //c with the Apple LCD monitor — both actual products! …but neither of which were ever able to run on batteries, and the monitor was notoriously unreadable in direct sunlight.
as a filmmaker, i find the idea 2010 is better to be borderline absurd but its an opinion ive heard a lot from hardcore sci-fi literature fans in particular
I probably last watched it when I was 11, my opinion at the time was that is was superior. I should rewatch and see how it holds up as an adult who now appreciates 2001 far more
I was also an 11 year old who felt 2010 was superior (having seen both movies on VHS) then when I was 14 I saw a 70mm print of 2001 in a movie theater and it was probably the inciting incident on my decision to become a filmmaker
I will warn everybody that if this devolves into a "films are meant to be seen in the theater" conversation I will absolutely delete anything and everything.
They played this at the Charles Theater in 70mm and good sound. I was more than impressed. Nolan dreams of being able to use this kind of organ pipe sustain.
I find Kubrick a tad annoying, but there is no way to watch this and not be impressed. I would pay 10 bucks to watch the earthrise open.
So, here's my question: I have a tiny bladder. What's the best time to get up and scoot to the bathroom (that's not th intermission, when there will be a line at the Ladies)? I don't need a specific time, just a scene, perhaps, or event in the movie....
I highly reccomend it! Of course, I like almost all the actors in it -- Roy Scheider, Helen Mirren, John Lithgow, Bob Balaban. Festival of character actors at the top of their games.
In my mind comparing the two things is almost impossible. "2001" is an experience more than anything else. "2010" is a linear story. It's two different things.
