TBH lot of people are on public assistance and don't even realize it, because it's not explicitly framed as govt assistance.

You might not need public assistance today, but life can happen and you need it tomorrow.

"The government gives me nothing!"
(Drives 10 miles on a paved rural road to pick up their kid from 4H at the school auditorium next to the county Sheriff office and fire station)
(It was a huge thing and I took advantage of it for years - it's just the tax laws have changed)

There's a lot of shit the govt does that people don't notice because it's the norm.

Take 4h and farmer education in general. That's govt assistance. Crop insurance? that's the govt. US farmers are subsidized in a way developing country farmers aren't
Again that's federal money. Highways - which by extension means cars - are subsized more than any other form of transport which is WILD when you consider how expensive car ownership. The avg US household spends ~ 15% of take home income on cars.
The postal service, which the GOP has been systematically trying to dismantle is a fuck you to rural areas. I live in NYC FedEx, DHL, and UPS love me. They don't love you.
You help them to get people to think of themselves as "taxpayers".

Still government, but hmm
Once upon a time, I borrowed their seed sample collection and learned to identify them, but that knowledge is long gone.
Seriously what
Note: unlike ships, Norfolks floats poorly.
Freaking lucky. I have to renegotiate it every 5 years here in Canada and we don't have 30 years option.
and that's fine and how it should be.
This ain’t a country of handouts, grandma.
Plus loss of research, meds & all else
Headstart has already closed its doors in the county I live in this week.
When pressed, he detailed a bunch of assistance he’d received to help get him on his feet, both private like a family members couch and public like food stamps.
It was such a weird moment. I think I understood conservatives like him *less* after talking to him.
1. assistance is bad
2. people who take assistance are bad
3. I'm not bad
4. therefore the stuff I took wasn't assistance
F'ing magic!
