Air-cooled Volkswagens were *not* reliable by today's standards. They *seemed* reliable b/c, prior to selling 1 VW, Volkswagen established a network of dealerships across the US w/mechanics trained to service its cars. Other foreign automakers with arguably superior cars, such as Fiat, did not.
Indeed, VW bugs had a very Germanic, Gotterdammerung habit of randomly bursting into flame, which would happen when fuel pump pressure popped out a little brass sleeve connecting the fuel line to the carb, so that gasoline would spray onto the ignition coil. Arrogant VW engineers never fixed it.
My 1.3 liter 1978 Fiat 128 4-speed was awesome, 1 of the earliest production autos to use the transverse front wheel drive power train. It redlined at 85 mph & was really built for windey Italian mountain roads. I replaced a leaky head gasket to get mine running https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiat_128
BMW. I had 2 motorcycles that were the greatest workhorse bikes of all time. I could strip the entire bike to its frame with the tool kit that came under the seat. No chain, always shaft-driven, always reliable.
Brilliant. Meanwhile, if the Chinese can embed technology in TikTok and every other device to spy on us, how are they gonna skip the cars that Tesla is producing?
That's because it is not a genius, it's just a rich man-child that bought someone else's good idea and hasn't been able to innovate anything with it since the original concept. Hence why Tesla models all look more or less the same.... Except the truck thing which is obviously Musk design- childish
Tesla cyber truck. Hasn't been issued a road worthiness certificate in Britain.

I still miss my VW bug. Drove it cross country twice. May have been primer grey but the engine ran smooth. Worst part about driving cross country? No radio.
Funny. I despise him as much as anyone. I have to say though, the car I bought in 2018 before he went off the rail is the lowest maintenance and most reliable car I’ve ever had.
When one has as much disposable income like Elon, why not buy cars in a six pack? That way there are always enough spares on hand when the eventuality of one of them catches on fire.

It rattled far more and felt a lot more flimsy than the 200,000 mile Mercedes I owned at the time.
Tesla was fast, but very cheaply made.
