Of course they do. They also think Trump is the second coming, and that there’s a “gay agenda” trying to take over. I even witnessed a Southern Baptist preacher blame LGBTQ+ for 9/11 at a vigil back in 2001. I really wish I could make this stuff up.
Oh and don’t get me started on their disrespect, condescension, and overall sanctimony concerning those new to the church. They call them “baby Christians.”
No doubt. I've encountered extreme catholics who were sure Martin Luther was similarly (they proved it via a prophecy). Extremism exists in all religions I guess.
The first #EarthDay march in 1970 paved the way for environmental reform. Since Reagan those laws have been chipped away. We need to demand a lot of changes from both Republicans and Democrats. Pope Francis, Bernie and Project Drawdown showed us how. https://reginamia.wordpress.com/2015/07/page/2/
I remember being a young girl going to see the Pope give mass at a stadium in Phoenix, and being stopped by evangelical "christians" warning me that Pope John Paul II was the devil, and we were all destined for hell. I was like "don't you have better things to do - like feed the hungry?" So weird.
I haven't claimed Catholicism in many years, but I remember that experience clearly to this day. We were children going to a worship service. Who decides that is the perfect time and the audience to harass?? It forever shaped my view of that style of faith, and nothing has ever redeemed it.
Evangelical Christian Nationalism is not a cause comprised of Christians. It's full of people that want the power and influence of the church, without all of that Jesus stuff.
I don’t mind having stakes that high. It’s fine to try to find important truths.
But the question is how you disagree. Do you debate? Do you self segregate? Do you take over a govt and create a theocracy to bend others to your will?
America was founded on freedom of religion for a reason.
Southern Baptists (in sheep’s clothing as evangelicals) taught why every other denomination was wrong and why Catholics and Mormons were of the devil — as well as why any other non-Christian religion meant burning in hell
Right???? I am a Christian. Always have been. But "evangelicals" ?? Never Christians. Greedy horrors. Rest with the Angels, Pope Francis. And Bless you for all you did for both the Cathlic community, and the "true" Christians.
Had a brother and his family invite me to their evangelical church. I was amazed how afterward, they and everyone they introduced to me to, would ask with disturbing enthusiasm 'wasn't that a great message, awe-inspiring. The disappointing looks when I hadn't transformed into themselves.
Florida..
Yup! I have been saying this to people the last few days who dont understand or know.
Grew up Christian myself and knew exactly what they were saying especially MGT with that tweet.. Christians hate Catholics, Mormons, Jehovah Witnesses, and jews.. and anything else not Christian...
The Catholic Church tried to guide us to do good things for others, but evangelicals only seem to care about getting saved and creating big mega churches.
You are right. I was raised Catholic and went to Parochial school. When I was in my early 30s, I became an evangelical. Then after a number of years and seeing how evangelicals judge other people it made me stop all together. I still have faith but not in any organized religion.
I'm spiritual, not religious. I respect people's choice to believe in what they like but I will never understand how people can believe in some fictional story/book but want to ban non fiction truth and facts and also any fiction that doesn't fit their narrative. They are the epitome of hypocrisy.
The American Religious Crusades will be the Evangelical, Heritage Project 2025 vs the Opus Dei, OSCO Catholics. Who will be the ones to take over this country?
It's funny. I've seen a small surge of support from some evangelicals for Catholics in one specific way: now that Protestant pastors are also being caught committing sexual assault & abuse & evangelicals don't want to accept that it's happening, they now doubt the abuse cases the Catholics have had.
Best friend in grade school (about a hundred years ag🤪) was Catholic & I was a Lutheran & I remember have conversations about this & how we thought personally that couldn’t happen to us while also knowing that’s exactly what we were being taught every Sunday. So messed up
Yeah, many people were wary of JFK bc he was Catholic. Also a bunch of Catholics I know will tell you that they aren’t Christian, they’re Catholic. It goes both ways.
The pope has found out,as will ALL religious people, THERE.IS.NO.GOD! There NEVER was. The "good book" is a series of fairy tales that predate writing.
Because evangelicals don’t realize Catholics are also Christians. Evangelicals think they’re special and have some kind of in with god and Jesus which is why overall they’re the most racist, judgmental hateful and selfish people I’ve ever come across.
I went to a prayer breakfast once with my priest, Father Tom. Father Tom was a firebrand in the lil red town of Mt. Vernon, MO. When the lead 'preacher' got up to commend everyone's attendance, he remarked off hand "All of Lawrence County's lead Christians are here, and Catholics too."
They’re judgemental and passive aggressive about most everything but they often believe in “good works” for the community. I see evangelical radicals only helping those they deign are ‘worthy’ ie ‘white’, etc. Many good pp in all faiths. Many hypocrites also.
Had a dipshit SB tell me bc I was brought up C, I was taught to worship Mary over Jesus, and my religion was a “false religion”. Ignorance. They couldn’t spell schism even if they were ever taught about it.
Such judgmental paralytics! To me Christians of all denominations who hate each other are equally worthless and have no authority or agency to speak for god much less cast judgment on others lest they declare themselves god and stand the trials other gods have endured.
Yep, I grew up in Missouri, and every single Baptist Church I attended had old people stating that Catholics are all going to hell. It was a very weird thing to learn as a kid. And then I became friends with a Catholic, and it became very murky and hard to be friends with her, knowing what I 'knew'.
Catholicism is a cult. It's simply a very powerful and long standing one, with a large following.
One which seems happy to ignore the extremely bloody history of the Cult (of the Catholic Church) in much the same way they ignore the extremely bloody behaviour of the "God" they choose to follow.
I grew up Catholic and then cycled through non-denominational and evangelical churches for years before leaving them all. The strange part is the Catholic church has the most extreme doctrine on paper but the least cult-like followers. Most Catholics emphasize ritual and community over faith.
I agree. Spaniards (more than 90% Catholic) observe the calendar of saints and celebrate their Easter processions with a passion yet are pretty liberal when it comes to actually practicing religion. Like you said, it’s a community thing.
I think people outside the community would be surprised to find many Catholics grew up in Catholic schools/communities but when they are asked privately about the sacrament being blood and body respond, "Oh no one actually believes they change."
My parents were Cuban, who are like the Italians. The attitude is that you need the Church to be hatched, matched and dispatched, but you know ... the Pope's old, so he doesn't understand about needing an abortion or your son being gay or how you just show up at Christmas and Easter.
My hypothesis is that growing up in a specific faith, surrounded by similar folks, means that you just ARE Jewish or Catholic or MAGA, without having to be introspective or examine what that means, for good or bad.
Converts tend more towards dogmatism, as they had to make a choice.
The proper response is [shocked face]: "OMG! I was just thinking the same thing about you! How did you know that?" Act as if they miraculously read your mind about them.
That’s horrible. Sad to hear. I believe we should see each other as a family under different roofs. There shouldn’t be any walls between. Because, like somebody said, there is only one church, simply because there is only one christ.
I remember being told years ago by an evangelical that Catholics were not Christians. I asked her "Then who the heck was I praying to when I was praying to Jesus all those years that I was a practicing Catholic?" She sputtered a little and then said that that was what she had been told.
Yep. I was told Catholics were a Mary cult & you guys worship her & all your saints were like demi gods & you were all going to hell. Along with every other religion. Fun times. I'm agnostic now. More of a witchy type. Save the earth & oceans type. Evangelicalism is a death cult.
The rule that priests can’t marry has to go. A subset of priests are secretly gay, pedophiles, alcoholics, etc. and they hide in the priesthood out of shame or to avoid temptation. Eventually they get opportunities that they don’t resist. That makes it easy to vilify the whole religion.
So much sickness.sorry to hear.So much irony when entire country was founded on being an immigrant, having a new start &chance 4success & the freedom to worship as you please. It’s bizarre really. But of course so many immediately justified harming the pp already here so there’s the first hypocrisy!
We’re all immigrants except the Native Americans. We really should embrace our melting pot. Our diversity is what makes us strong. We don’t have to agree with each other. But it’s ok to have an open mind and be respectful. Try new things and ideas. We are quickly losing our American culture.
As a recovering Southern Baptist, I can attest to this. When I was 8, I'd leave the service, go to the bathroom, & stay there because the whole vibe was so dark it made me physically ill. I denounced Christianity at 18 because nobody did what Jesus taught, though I still live by similar principles.
alignment with the teachings of Jesus is most beautiful form of Christianity.Regardless of the house. It’s so simple. Love your neighbor.Be kind.Help others in need. Mankind gets their egos, opinions and dogma in the way. That’s the whole practice isn’t it? When you forget, return to Grace again? Asap?
I’m shocked at the so called “Christians” who think Pope Francis was practically a devil!
Never knew. Can we troll them by calling them anti Christian?
I have been told so many insane things to my face about what these people believe re: Catholics. One such "Christian" told me that the priests have deceived us, have led us to believe we're praying to God, but in reality, we're praying to Satan. And that's the mild stuff.
The number of times I’ve been asked, “Are you Christian, or are you Catholic?” Bitch, we are the OG Christians. It’s Catholic or Protestant, not Catholic or Christian.
Err... I think that's a little un-Orthodox in truth. There was a little schism a while back before the Protestant reformation, a mini annulment, if you will, still friends but... separated from the Western Roman church.
In Europe... Yes, but how many Americans even know enough European history to understand the distinction? But this is a WASP country if you run the numbers on Christians.
Look at it from this perspective - when I had neighbors who were Mormons on mission, I surprised them by saying not to bother
because I already decided no on the Jesus being divine issue, another sect of Christianity won't work. They looked at me very surprised and asked how I knew Mormons are Christians. I said "the Jesus part gives it away".
How often do we hear “Christians and Catholics” from these people? And that is limited only because they lack any knowledge of Coptic or Orthodox Christians. But then, most believe other Protestants are going to hell too.
I wasn't but I lived in Ohio, which is enough to have managed to amass a collection of Chick tracts which a suprising number feature how hellbound Catholics are.
100%!! Grew up in an "agnostic" Christian cult (Evangelicals that thought they were better than other ev. but whatever). I refuse to pursue religion with my kids. They watch me in my pagan practices but until they ask questions or find some interest in what I do, I won't expose them to any religion.
evangelicals thumbing their noses at catholics will never not be hilarious to me. like… i’m sorry, but y’all were born again yesterday, refuse to study even the scant history you have, and mostly hinge your theology on individual charisma. the other guys are literally the OG. it’s embarrassing.
When I was a kid, and Kennedy was running, my evangelical relatives said if he won the pope would run ourvcountry and we would be branded with 666 on our foreheads
Yep! Old enough to remember hearing that. And to remember my very gentle-soul, accept-everyone, help-the-poor, Catholic dad crying the day Kennedy was assassinated. 🥺
Absolutely true. I was raised in a "born again" household, with churchgoers speaking in tongues and all that. And it was drilled into me that Catholics were heretics.
I feel incredibly lucky to have escaped that garbage, for as we know, many are locked into it for life.
Today's evangelicals suck, but so do generalizations. I was born in 1970, confirmed in a Lutheran, evangelical church, went to private school to grade 9, and was never told to hate catholics. We studied the differences and acknowledged them. My pastor didn't politic, and I think the pope was good.
I was a graphic designer at a large Christian book publisher publisher in the early 2000s. Was told frequently by coworkers that I (raised Catholic) was going to hell unless I developed a “personal relationship with Jesus”. Those “Christians” were some of the worst people I’ve ever known.
"Personal relationship wifh Jesus" when I was told that the first time I laughed for 5 minutes muted in an Xbox chat party.
"So Jesus is like Snuffleupagus on sesame street. The imaginary friend you hope is willed into existence?"
I have never met a worse class of person than American Evangelicals. They are without a doubt the least pleasant people to be around, both individually and as a group.
I cannot think of any PERSON who was more responsible for my loss of faith as an adult.
I believe their holy book would say they haven’t even entered the kingdom of heaven and so they keep others out. Except they think it is referring to everyone else but them. The phrase two-fold sons of hell rings a bell.
Same…
My dad worked at the church. He was fired because his best friend, the pastor, was cheating on his wife with the deaf interpreter. The associate pastor, who hated my dad, blackmailed the pastor to fire my dad. Oh, and later the assoc paster was fired for embezzling. Sadly, not uncommon 🤦🏻♀️
If none of those stories (and yes, I've heard plenty of them) were real, I would still have a problem with Evangelicals and their self-righteous cruelty.
But yeah, the hypocrisy is strong with them too. I left faith completely for personal reasons. But there's just so little GOOD that comes from it.
So true, this could have been a thread about cruelty as well. I left the church 20 years ago and whenever I hear “church speak” or “pastor tone” I still cringe.
It’s essentially a license to be judgemental and so normal ppl are put off and the church attracts ppl who enjoy being mean spirited and awful, with the flimsiest ‘religious’ pretext. If you challenge them they explode like a typical narcissist in meltdown.
Common to all is a lack of empathy
Speaking as a deconstructed Christian who later lost all faith in faith I would never want anyone to lose their god because of people. Even though their apologetics are atrocious, for me it should always be a personal relationship, even if it's just parasocial. But some really do make it easy to go.
summer '05, after biking 5 miles in good time someone told me I "needed Jesus" as I'm walking into a store. The look on their face when I pulled out my Razr and called my buddy was already gold, but ending that interaction with "I've got him on speed dial, how about you?" made them go nuclear. 🤣
I believe in a personal relationship w/Jesus& God 4myself;still evolving.never agreed w/the tradition that you needed an intermediary for this &that I was somehow not worthy.Plus the history w/the Catholic Church is so disturbing. But there is also beauty. How can one be wrong 4 Divine Love practice?
Same time I was finishing my undergrad and had fellow students frantic over the required intro to religion course. "Xtian" homeschooled young woman so distraught that she was allowed to sit in the hallways during lectures and debates that conflicted with her "beliefs."
Grew up in those churches and heard Catholicism called a “cult” by some. Fortunately my parents, including my minister dad, did not believe that at all.
I was raised Catholic. I now am Protestant. In Bible studies I've heard Evangelicals say that Catholics aren't Christians. There are nonBiblical things that Catholicism added to itself (ex: Mary never sinned and is Queen of Heaven). But Catholics certainly are Christian.
Read their Creed. They know we are all sinners in need of a savior and that the only Savior is Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God. And that we are saved by accepting Jesus as our Lord and Savior.
My family and many friends are Catholic. They don't believe in most of the unbiblical stuff.
I don’t think a lot of people understand the level of deception and brainwashing that goes on in evangelical churches. We were taught that the pope was Satan and all Catholics go to Hell because they pray to Saints and don’t believe in the priesthood of the believer.
My middle school/high school/church/youth group/etc were all the same building. About 110 students and about 20 faculty. 2 youth pastors were pedophiles, my first principle quit in the middle of the night and shredded dozens of trash bags of docs, and my 2nd principle was also a repeat pedophile.
Well I have to agree with that because it says in the Bible that you cannot come to the Lord but by the Son if he did not SPECIFICALLY ask the Lord to Forgive his Sins and accept him as Savior YES he will Priest cannot absolve you Priest Nor Mary Can get you into Heaven only by way of the Christ
And there is No Purgatory the scripture says absent from the body present with the Lord. PERIOD
The Judgment for Everyone on that Day and then....... Well
Wasn't raised in a Evangelical Church (Baptist) but I'm a Bible Believing God-Fearing person and it states clearly in the Bible in the scriptures I posted
Ha!! It always makes me laugh that "those" Christians don't know they are actually Catholic. Every single Christian denomination roots from the Catholic church. Hating on their ancestor church is hilarious.
I continue to find people who simply don’t believe this. They look at me like I’m making it up. Yet I’ve been subjected to this nonsense from evangelicals for decades. I’m a lapsed Catholic so it doesn’t matter, but to be hateful to this pope?!
Trump says the Cardinals should select the Pope based on the highest bidder. He offers Canada, Greenland and two Tesla Cybertrucks as his starting bid.
I don't have a dog in that fight (I'm not a Christian), but I know this because of the significant number of people who've expressed it to me over the years without my asking. I live in Missouri, though this "belief" is not exclusive to the state.
I was raised Catholic and have lived surrounded by evangelicals for years. So I find it surprising that given their animosity and hatred of Catholics, evangelicals have joined forces in this administration with so many prominent catholics. IMO they’ll be at each other’s throats before too long
Not out of loyalty but from experience, I attended Catholic all girls school with Opus Dei leanings, I can tell you that I expect Catholics to fully win in the tussle with evangelicals. Not only win but they will demand their total subjugation. Catholics, especially Opus Dei, play the LONG game
speaking of the long game, I don't think there's any older continuous bureaucracy than the Vatican (in Europe, anyway - I don't know enough about South Asia or Persia or China)
Right. The Vatican has been around since the 4th Century. Which is just one reason I say they’d win the tussle. They’ve been through worse and come out the other side with even greater power and riches. Evangelicals don’t stand a snowball’s chance in hell
"You fell victim to one of the classic blunders, the most famous of which is 'Never get involved in a land war in Asia.'" And second is “do not start a beef with a Jesuit on twitter”
Yeah, how many people have all the churches kept hidden for SA and Child bad stuff. I am so not religious, and I think it is funny the mass sadness for a man who cared nothing about us. Hated Sundays when I worked in restaurants too. Fake, evil people. Evil to the core.
My grandmother was Catholic and attended church with my baptist grandfather. She was told this for years. She caught hell from both religions. But she was a very good person who believed in a personal faith....not showy just personal.
My Southern Baptist grandparents thoroughly believed Catholics were evil. She shopped with the Italian grocers because they would deliver, but she had to repent every Sunday for giving them her money. Not even kidding.
It’s the American way! We need to remember that the Pilgrims and the Puritans came to America seeking religious freedom *for THEMSELVES*, not anyone else. A few years later they were hanging Quakers on the Boston Common.
My great-grandmother was S. Baptist. My grandfather, her son-in-law, was Catholic-lite. She constantly tried to convert EVERYONE.
At her funeral, per her request, the paster offered anyone in attendance the chance to accept Jesus into their hearts. My grandfather bellowed, "We've heard it before!"
As someone who was raised Southern Baptist, this is actually not even restricted to religions out of the Southern Baptist circle. I lived across the street from an Episcopalian church and every time I said anything about it, my mom would call them weird “because they prayed out loud together”
Yep, I was Catholic and 40 yrs ago married a man from a Christian family in a rural area in what is now a red state. Was shocked at how upset his family was that he was marrying a Catholic!!
We are no longer affiliated w any religions, raised our kids to value kindness, service, and not to judge.
Oh, and it’s not just evangelicals! Read a pamphlet from Jehovah’s Witnesses. Every single one mentions the evils of Catholicism.
They stopped coming to my door after I laid them out, saying that denigrating other faiths doesn’t enhance theirs, it only shows how petty and insecure they are.
How many pp have died because someone thought their version of worshipping the SAME GOD was better? In history…trillions? All the holy wars…ironic isn’t it? Killing pp for a practice of LOVE. Pilgrims came to have freedom of religion. Then y are they the most judgemental and hateful? Let everybody be!
Being raised in America, it amazes me how much folks are unaware of our own gd history. Anyone who paid attention history class should know these basic facts. Catholics were outcasts from the beginning. WASPs controlled everything for most of our history.
So it's no fluke or coincidence that only 2 of 47 presidents have been catholic? One had his head blown off. To this day, only 25% of Americans will admit to being catholic.
How many of those in the deep south. Are descendants from White Anglo Saxon Protestant. Not that many I dare ask.
Most wouldn't be allowed within the vicinity of their fine 24 bedroom houses in Angerland.
🇮🇪🇪🇺
Along with Blacks and Jews, Roman Catholics were KKK targets for hate and elimination. Most have forgotten how controversial it was that President Kennedy was Roman Catholic. People in the south feared he would just be a puppet for the Pope. Evangelical stupidity is that bad.
This blows my mind. I was raised Catholic in CA, even though my parents weren't very religious. Had friends who were from all sorts of religious backgrounds- Episcopalian, Presbyterian, Mormon, Jehovah's Witness, Jewish, no religion, etc. Not a big deal for anyone from what I recall.
Those evil POS' gave me nightmares! What a POS Jack Chic was to distribute such trash to children and adults. Had many given as tips.🙄 JFC!! I am soooo atheist now, I hate religion everyday all day!! 🙌🙌💯💯 Tax the churches!!
Protestant fundamentalists have taken the worst lie from Roman Catholic doctrine--eternal damnation--and added their own idolatrous fixation on the Bible interpreted literally. The result is unparalleled toxicity and hatemongering.
As a catholic in the south, I'm called a heathen. But without the Catholic church, none of these "Christian" religions would exist. Catholics are the original Christian church.
I was raised Catholic. In high school I had a girlfriend and one Sunday I went with her to the Lutheran church she and her family belonged to. First time I ever heard a pastor rail on to a congregation about the evil sinful Catholics. Yes, after church was awkward.
I always found that odd, that Catholics were viewed a heathen idol worshippers. My son invited one of his classmates to his first communion and the Mother told me her daughter could never go into a Catholic church. How the evangelicals bonded with the Catholics in Magaland is fascinating to me.
Southern evangelical "Christian" is basically a home-grown American religion. It hijacks the brand known as "Jesus Christ" and makes up its own catechism and morality. When called out as a fraud, they cry that all Christians are being attacked. It works, and now you have a president who does that.
I don't follow a fake "Christian" or their entitled superiority. If they truly followed the Bible, they would be knowledgeable that there are more than one religion in it, all of which thought they were rightful. "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."
My goodness… why? Now I’m not an expert in religion here, the pope could’ve done a lot more with the current social issues that we have on hand, but he was a good kind man. A man of God. And these so-called Christians think he’s burning in hell…? Evangelicals, go sit the fu*k down.
When I was a kid in the 50’s we were taught if we even entered a Roman Catholic Church the floor might open up and shoot us straight to hell. They have found a common cause in abortion control. An issue invented by old impotent men not mentioned in either book of the Bible.
I was told as a child that Catholics worshiped Satan without knowing it. Absolutely Bullshit. Evangelicals have no place in government. Nobody in a death cult should be in government.
This thread is awesome. Reference after reference of Talibangelical churches that pedophile their own kids at churches around the nation, on the daily. It's not drag queens and trans folks, it's preachers and church leaders. Why do we keep putting up with it?
There are some conservative Catholics who believe the same thing. My neighbor, who's a "Catholic" MAGA actually said she hopes the new pope isn't as liberal as this one was. I told her I didn't see anything liberal about loving your neighbor, helping the poor, and welcoming those facing injustice.
Blows my mind being raised Roman Catholic and dealing with the new brand of conservative American Catholics. We were taught about being humble, generous, kind, and loving people regardless of their background. My Catholic school had tons of immigrants.
I'm so happy at my church. We've been very blessed to have great priests who have supported social issues and have spoken about Jesus' teachings of compassion and love. I've heard of conservative priests in other parishes, so I'm afraid to leave my parish even though I'm 35 minutes away now.

that Chick brand of Christianity puts so many people off of Christianity. which is hilarious as they really expect the opposite outcome.
real gross too. like you can murder all you want but if you say you love Jesus on your death bed— heaven! the fuck? no.
Idiots.
"Judge not, lest ye be judged..."
Every religion is 100% right if it’s to be a true religion. Every other religion is 100% wrong.
“God forbid” if religion was merely an opinion.
But the question is how you disagree. Do you debate? Do you self segregate? Do you take over a govt and create a theocracy to bend others to your will?

Organized religion is used for power and tax deductions. You don’t have to donate money to have faith in a higher power or a moral compass
Immigrants from Italy or Eastern Europe were often the targets.
Eventually those groups assimilated.
The point is the Klan has always been a Christian Nationalist group.
Catholics weren’t considered true Christians.

For example:

But they can hold a donut as they raise their hands high! Hallelujah

As an atheist, it's all the same to me. 👀💭

The tithe basket is near the door, and the lord rewards those who reward me! I mean, Honor Him!
Great book.
