The Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie snubs are aggressively obtuse. Gosling's nomination, in the face of their absence, only underscores the point of Gerwig's film.

Not to mention shuffling them to Adapted Screenplay... adapted from what? They aren't even trying to hide that they are purposely not giving this film fair treatment.
I am under the impression that adapting is not adapting a plastic toy with no back story. Adapting is taking a story that exists and 'adapting' that for film. The story in this script is original.
Adapted is a broad term, though. I don't think this was a snub, it's just the academy rules on what is considered adapted. Also, I don't think "adapted" should imply "lesser." In many ways, adapting is probably harder because you need to be faithful to what you're adapting.
I don't think it's broad enough for the script to not be considered an original screenplay. There is no backstory. There is no existing lore or structure. There is a message being sent, and it's not a good one, I think. Not just me saying it, I'm nobody. Also, no nod for Robbie, but the "guy" is in.
Here's the thing: the precedent is that adapted here has always meant that the story itself is adapted from another story. The categorization in this case is a subtle snub perhaps because they're changing the precedent for just this movie.
Also, the WGA already classified it as "Original" so, it's not just me some guy on bsky who is confused : "Oscars Shakeup: ‘Barbie’ Moved to Adapted Screenplay by Academy Despite WGA Classification as Original" - From Variety
"... for the best screenplay adapted from previously established material. The most frequently adapted media are novels, but other adapted narrative formats include stage plays, musicals, short stories, TV series, and even other films and film characters..." No mention of toys, or objects. MEDIA
I would be shocked, but the institutions of power in the industry gave us the scraps last year by giving Everything Everywhere All At Once basically a full sweep.
Every other year when they're not mired in horrifying controversy, they're basically giving brilliant creators the middle finger.
Honestly, that's the biggest lesson in coming over here from the Other Place. Block early, without hesitation. You are not obligated to see anyone's ramblings that fuck with your mental well-being.
I used to think blocking wasn't warranted unless I strongly disagreed with someone about important stuff or they were trolls, and now I just block people whose comments give off shitty vibes I don't like, and my social media experience is so much better.
Idiot. But just imagine if I'm right. The PR nightmare would be if someone like Mike Flanagan talking all this anti-addiction stuff, when one of his inner circle was dealing with their own internal problems and no one had done anything. On set it wasn't my place, but now I just want to know he's ok.
Ok, bringing out the dip shits. Cool. I'm right here. Hey do me a favour cause I'm sick of having a nonresponse on the matter, and having seen the dude on the set of Girl in the Bunker, check in on Henry please. If he was just deep in the role, cool! If that's the case, /I/ am fine looking like an
Its director and star who are the producers of the film. Have to wonder if Robbie telling the Oppenheimer folks they can move their opening if they're worried when declining the request to move hers played into this. (I don't wonder, I am a cynic.)
Gosling's part wasn't award winning. I mean he did a good job, but not like "OMG! You have to see what Ryan did with Ken! You won't believe how great it was!" is likely something people are saying.
The lack of Gerwig for Director is obscene. Every frame, every performance is a unified, incredible vision, in a way that only a great director can bring together.
No, no, think about it! What better way to honor Gerwig, Robbie, and the message of the movie they made than to nominate Gosling but not either of them and then let newspapers report on it as if it were just the normal way things are done in the world?
They've done /more/ than just honor the creators; they've set out to make those creators' points real and bring them to an audience that might not otherwise have seen them!
I'm so irrationally mad about this. Barbie is not a perfect movie, but any criticism of its inconsistencies and/or faux feminism would go two-fold for Poor Things. It's hard to read this as anything other than two women being put in their place.
I'll say what I've been saying. I agree they both did incredible jobs. Tell me whose spots they take to get the nominations and I'm all with you. It's a zero sum process, so tell me who's out when they're in?
Award shows are BS. When Twin Peaks Season 3 got snubbed by the SAG Awards and most of the Emmys, (It won two "Creative Arts" Emmys) I was done. #OscarsSoMale

B) There are approximately one million extant Barbie movies, video games, novels, and TV shows.
C) the WGA and AMPAS are different organizations that may not always agree, and these are the AMPAS nominations.
D) Toys are media.

It's possible (?) I'm the "It's fine!" dog and I've just blocked all the fire.
Not so, here in this place.
