He is correct. But by “any child” he means the children in his church’s youth group who have had to rely for their education on one high school degreed parent who never took advanced math and believes the dinosaurs were wiped out in Noah’s flood.
Unfortunetly being a young earth creationist is not a disqualifying factor in being an American school teacher. My HS biology teacher DID NOT BELIVE IN EVOLUTION.
he's just factually wrong AI tools are limiting, they don't innovate and they can barely stay in context without constant prompt engineering. All these idiots senators are falling for snake oil marketing shit.
It’s not an effective tool as it makes mistakes and is generally not much better than a search engine. Oh and it uses water and electricity to a degree that should alarm more people.
What he's saying: "Republican-led states can cut their public education budgets by half, fire a third of teachers, get more gig-economy-type workers into schools (less paid than substitute teachers), and put kids into online courses." Because we saw how well _that_ worked during the pandemic.
I thought we wanted kids to be in school.
So now they will be in school, in front of a computer with an AI generated teacher?
Who monitors, who takes them to the restroom if they need help?Who comforts them when they are crying?
The FUCKING COMPUTER?
You people are FUCKING STUPID!
I'm a public school teacher. Overuse of tech tools is DEGRADING THE QUALITY OF EDUCATION. There is a ed-tech industrial complex undermining the quality of education. They want to replace teachers with computers for a variety of reasons. One is to limit the development of critical thinking in kids.
I'm engaged in an ongoing push against the overuse of IXL this year. Last year I was doing the same against overuse of IReady. There are much better ways to use that time for instruction that involve human to human interactions, rather than putting kids on a screen.
In an effort to rehabilitate their math skills and increase critical thinking, the only technology my geometry students get is a calculator. No desmos "tricks" for finding the answers
Favor -- could you share more about the "tricks" that feel problematic? We'd love for Desmos to support critical thinking instead of subverting it, and counterexamples are really helpful in making design choices.
It mostly stems from admin pressure to get students past the algebra 1 SOL. To meet the expectations, teachers are teaching "tricks" to get them past the test.
Human teachers > computer programs. It is well documented by Self Determination Theory that humans need relatedness, autonomy, and competence to thrive and maintain intrinsic motivation and develop agentic motivation. Software cannot provide relatedness. Less money on software more on teachers.
I'm an ELD teacher. I don't put kids on tech. We read, talk, and write together in community. I use a projector to project conversation questions, stems, and word banks to facilitate our discussions and writing. When I try using tech, they always show concerning, addict-like behaviors and dont focus
So kind of like returning to the days of ancient Greece, where people had to learn through the oral history before it became commonplace to write things down so they could be shared, referenced, and built upon rather than being rediscovered anew time and time again, where those eager to learn...
had to seek out a mentor to teach and guide them...
...and turn that over to a bot that has been trained on an unimaginable volume of data that can come from any crackpot, conspiracy theorist, internet troll, reality TV host/fan, "influencers" that will say or do anything just to get attention...
...foreign and domestic propaganda machines, advertising agencies, scammers... or reliable sources that get fewer like, stars, upvotes, or re-whatevers because their not as much fun as the rest. So you end up with a generation or more, being taught by a the results of a multimillion dollar...
...project that has absorbed all the sarcasm, racism, misogyny, and bile of the previous generation and repeats it with no more filter, imagination, or understanding of the potential of damage that could be done by perpetuating the mistakes of the past than a goldfish.
Won't the children feel slighted when they see all the AI generated people have 8 fingers per hand, two floating sausage fingers with nails at each end, 3.5 arms, a head popping out mid-torso, one set of toes pointing north and the other set pointing south, and everyones eyes are identical?
Comments
Republicans: the nexus machine has so much to teach our children.
It thought that obelus symbols (used for division) were plus signs.
The GOP: hold my beer, they are not dumb enough
It is the adults who are most likely dumb.

America's going to become dumber isn't it?😭

Yes, Kevin. You've given children a richer educational experience. Handsome 😉"
