You should be feeling like Germany in 1933. The first thing Hitler did after becoming chancellor was to pardon all the nazis who were imprisoned after his attempted coup. Sound familiar?
Why do people act like this is a repeat? In 1933 nobody knew what totalitarianism is. Hitler seemed super capable, he impressed even people who were against him.
In 2025, Musk is a laughing stock because he lied about playing Path of Exile like a 4 year old.
We know what they are. We see their personality disorders written on their foreheads, while they still don't know. Just as clueless as their spiritual brethren 1933. Not onto themselves at all.
Sure they kill and harm people along they way, but they NEVER "win". Can't. They leech and then implode.
Apologies for spiders for the comparison, but like spiders, they actually are more afraid of you than you (should be) of them. They don't know how to human, so they need money and others to tell them how great they are. And it's never enough, and then they die, as the fools they are.
Everybody dies anyway, why not laugh at some Nazis along the way. They hate that. They LOVE being feared. But they're just dorks, really. They can kill me, but they can't stop me from laughing at them until my last breath, so there's that.
Also many of the Nazis were combat veterans of World War I. There are some veterans of the “War on Terror” that support Trump, but not in the same numbers and in important positions.
Whether or not people knew what totalitarian was/is in 1933 is irrelevant to the fact that they lived under it. Also the conception of totalitarianism was invented by an Italian anti-fascist intellectual named Giovanni Amendola in the mid 1920’s
This, 100%.
Not Vichy France, 1930.
Still nominally 'democratic' Germany, 1933.
Hitler rose to President and Chancellor, declared himself 'Fuhrer', and began to eliminate all democratic structures across the country. Detention of 'political enemies'. Throttled media. Camps.
Anything sound familiar?
I'm reading a novel about the French Resistance fighters right now Luna.
The Nightingale
by Kristin Hannah.
She is an author I don't usually pick up, but so many people recommended it for the parallels to our time in history.
They were so brave!
The quote that's been going around ends with something more akin to "That's when we knew it was deliberate." (Because what would "we knew what was next" even mean? A ginned up war against an oil-rich country that had nothing to do with it?)
Welcome to the fourth Reich. They have repackaged Nazism into Christian nationalism, sprinkling a little God in there to ensure the religious zealots sign on. Same ideology, same agenda just a different place and time.
Do you live in the US? You’re not occupied by a foreign power. You’re led by a fascist self proclaimed tyrant. Supported by more fascists. All of them very, very, very American.
You’re not alone. I keep replaying the beginning of Irene Nemirovsky’s Suite Francaise, when the air raid sirens sound, hitting various human states of mind/body. How to summon the morale to move?!
Actually, someone pointed to Germany after WWI and that seems like more of a one to one comparison but this one isn't outlandish either. It still conveys the sentiment of feeling under siege and not knowing who to trust.
Because it may be close at hand, and these people are starting to give off Nazi vibes.
Go watch The Light we Cannot See or Number 24 on Netflix. They make you feel like you're on ABC's "What would you do- Nazi edition"
Not by a long shot. Bush was inept but he didn't disrespect the Constitution. I served under W, and while we took steps backwards in environmental protection, he didn't dismantle the agency or the law. Trump is far worse.
The good news is that fascist regimes have a hard time keeping it together. The longest they can typically manage is the lifespan of a dictator, because then their incompetence causes the regime to collapse in on itself.
The French Resistance worked because it was part of a greater allied effort. France needed a full military invasion from multiple nations to be liberated. Nobody is going to invade America.
Thanks, Dan. Not talking about retaking the country militarily. Talking about resisting as in slow walking the destructive changes, like his freezing of NIH funding tonight. As in minimizing the damage an incompetent cabinet secretary can inflict. As in being creative.
Sure. But the French Resistance was just one component in an allied effort, including a government in exile that claimed legitimacy. Isolated resistance efforts will not be very effective in the long term to dislodge the regime.
Good individuals can and should do good work and save lives. But that's not the same thing as a resistance movement. Germany had one - the White Rose - and it was crushed.
Mine parachuted into Holland during Operation Market Garden. Was a POW in Germany, came home to be a life-long Democrat. I too am glad he's no longer around to see his youngest child living through this. Can you imagine the kick in the teeth to have to say, "Oh no, not again"?
When I was a child in the 1940’s I wondered how the Germans ,my relatives, could let this happen. Well,we’re here now and I still don’t understand Is it because we want to be polite?

Be mindful that among all those followers are a huge number of informers.
it's freaking cold.
I'm about to Max Manus this stuff.
The internal shredding of America leads me to comparisons with Rome, Athens, or Germany itself but I’m just squirming bug. So I will withdraw.
We'll broadcast the loudest SOS to every country that doesn't agree with Trump's methods as loud as a Japanese rock concert!
We've gotta resist!
If any of Trump's brownshirts come knocking, I will defend myself with my samurai sword if I have to...!
I’m with you.
It has sucked.

But for everything else, there is Master Card. 🤭
but this time if you are a jew you are safer than everyone else
unless you are poor
This is more like when Hitler became Chancellor in Germany.
Sad state of affairs. We are going to have to fight for everything.
