The Pret Christmas Lunch. Pret have lost their footing a bit I think. Blandly inoffensive, not stellar. Sandwich version the bread is even more forgettable.
At £4.99 for the sandwich, you’re better off signing up to my newsletter for £4.99 a month: https://www.ft.com/tryinsidepolitics
Pret's sandwich claims a lot - cranberry, turkey, stuffing, some kind of weirdly dried onions - but flavourwise the only thing packing any kind of punch is the cranberry.
The Sandwich Sandwich Christmas Sandwich: essentially the same ingredients as Pret's, but actually good. I had this a couple of days ago and I didn't need dinner that day. Just as well because at £12.95 it comes with a hell of a price tag.
A much more reasonable price tag is £4.99 a month, which you can subscribe to my award-winning daily politics newsletter: https://www.ft.com/tryinsidepolitics
Yeah. Not, I think, worth the investment, time-wise, given the weather. Queues in part downstream of the fact that both Pret and Leon have gone downhill. See also the huge queue outside that butcher and *Paul's* of all places.
Turkey does not have much of a flavour & that is why you need the stuffing, the bread sauce and the cranberry as well as the bacon wrapped chipolatas. Now make a sandwich out of that lot
the horrifically-named, and frankly only christmas-adjacent in terms of filling, M&S "Christmas Sando" is the delicious, unhinged flavourbang you may be seeking
I really miss the VLT. It was the best sandwich ever (apart obviously from home made marmite ones, which are better). I will never forgive them for ending it.
The one I make at about 6.30 on Christmas day which is basically just the lunch all over again between slices of bread. Normally too tall to actually get in your mouth. .
Mozzarella is, in my opinion, the most tasteless dairy product invented, even when it's posh. By chance I had some leftover tzatziki one day, and spread some on top. Wow!
Yes, they do in fact have multiple shops selling sandwiches and you can go from place to place, getting different sandwiches to decide which one is the best sandwich in your area.
I can vouch for this. I do not live in London and I have had (bought) a sandwich. Not today I must admit but previously. This has been on more than one occasion and not just times when I have been to London.
I grew up in London and was shocked, nay, astonished, to discover that the barbaric peoples beyond the M25 also put fillings in between slices of bread!
Well, you know, I've heard of Christmas crackers, and cakes, and trees, even, but I've never come across a Christmas sandwich before. My ignorance, obvs. 😆
It’s a bit like the iPhone. The leap from basic sandwich to Christmas sandwich is an absolute game changer, but then they feel the need to put mostly pointless extra features in every year until you’re pulling out sodding sprouts
Also, in the spirit of the indie Christmas single, we should have a side list of non-chain offers from, say, Max’s, Dusty Knuckle, etc. Perhaps one for @jim.londoncentric.media if we’re staying Londoncentric
It's after Christmas and you're having a hot open-faced Roast Beast sammich with plenty of gravy, on French bread, with some fresh coleslaw on the side.
Unless you had turkey for Christmas, so it's a hot open-faced turkey sammich with plenty of gravy, on French bread.
For me Christmas season starts the day after Thanksgiving, so I’m going with a turkey sandwich made from the leftovers. I kinda look forward to that more than the big meal.
A leftovers sandwich, protein of your choice, side of your choice, and sauce of your choice, all from the holiday meal leftovers. So good that Capriottis serves the Bobbie all year long.
From the high street, Pret, every time.
But… the best is the one you make around 6pm on Christmas Day stuffed full with all the leftovers. With mayo - lots of mayo.
M&S do a surprisingly well-stocked fridge of Xmas sandwiches. 🎄🎁 Cranberry, turkey, stuffing, brie(!) ... I think some of the proceeds even go to their charity partners? 🤔
I was only introduced last year to this British phenomenon of the Christmas sandwich. It is delightful and i thoroughly enjoyed trying one. Another example of not having nice things here across the pond.
Leftover turkey with creamed kraut on rye! The sauerkraut is fixed with bacon, onion, and caraway seed, all of which are wonderful with turkey and rye. 😋
I’m still thinking about Thanksgiving. I’m looking forward to turkey on leftover dinner rolls slathered with French onion chip dip. Think what you will, but I love it!
On Christmas night - granary bread, butter, thin layer of marmite, turkey, stuffing, thin layer of suitable cheddar, sliced properly ripe tomato, bit of letttuce, Boxing Day pickle
I saw a Christmas sandwich made in London that was stacked high with layers of turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffing, and more. Dunked in gravy, of course!
I don't know if it qualifies as a Christmas sandwich, but if you take leftover Thanksgiving items, turkey, cranberry, stuffing, mashed potatoes and stick them on a sandwich and griddle it with some butter then dip into gravy while you eat.
I'm from the states I like a turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, mayo, on whatever bread I have, but usually some multi grain sandwich bread. It's my favorite sandwich of all time. My second favorite would be an Italian sub with mayo instead of oil n vinegar.
Focaccia bread, green pesto spread bottom half, grilled eggplant(olive oil, oregano and red pepper flakes), roasted red pepper, feta cheese, balsamic glaze and top half of the focaccia, black olive tapenade. It speaks of peace and good will.
Anything lacking pistacchio or cranberry.
I see these ingredients in everything these days, as if agri business has planted too many and are desperately trying to flog them off. Bit like ostriches a few years ago.
For me it's slices of roast pork with sage and onion stuffing and a big dollop of apple sauce.
I used to get one every year at the christmas markets and it was always the taste of the season, for me.
But I live in France - where they make some very nice white bread - and I am not talking baguette. Some of the bread is so nice that, on the day, with lots of butter, you can make a very nice what we Dubliners call a "chip sandwich" with properly cooked fresh chips.
No, London didn't invent sandwiches.
Yes, other places can have more than one type of sandwich.
Yes, more than one sandwich shop as well.
Yes, you can have cranberry on a sandwich at other times of the year.
I must say that the Pret Boxing Day toastie is pretty good. It benefits from the addition of caramelised onion rather than cranberry sauce, which is dreck.
I’ve glazed the duck skin with honey and made a gravy using allspice, cloves, and star anise - it tasted very “German” to me so I didn’t think of noodles but that sounds like a fun idea!!
I miss my grandparents homemade cheese on bread 😟 Otherwise it is the type of bread that makes it a Christmas sandwich, it's called vörtbröd=wort bread
I am very passionate about Christmas sandwiches, a few years ago i emailed tesco that they should do them year round (i wouldn’t do that now because the quality has gone down).
Also afraid to say that M&S have the best classic Christmas sandwich
“Gen Z preferred crisps inside a sandwich while Boomers prefer them on the side”. What utter nonsense - crisp butties and chip butties were definitely a big thing right through the 1960s and 1970s

Cold knocks the arse out of most flavours.
Technically, this just a breakfast sandwich with a festive rebrand.
Honestly, Idk, but few sandwiches can beat tahini and manchego on wholemeal. Salami and Blueberry conserve comes close.
Unless you had turkey for Christmas, so it's a hot open-faced turkey sammich with plenty of gravy, on French bread.
Oh sorry, sandwich...? 🤔
But… the best is the one you make around 6pm on Christmas Day stuffed full with all the leftovers. With mayo - lots of mayo.
3-4 thin slices of your roast meat. Mustard. Mayo. Butter lettuce. Muenster or mild cheddar.
Mix flour & egg into leftover mashed taters. Form a patty. Fry 2 slices bacon. Fry patty in the bacon fat.
Layers: bread, mustard, meat, patty, bacon, cheese, greens, mayo, bread.
With a side of Christmas Cookies for added nutrition.
Yeah that's good.

Venison and Cranberry?

Ok, it's the annual Christmas sandwich debate...
No, London didn't invent sandwiches.

I like turkey, ham, stuffing and cranberry sauce
Instead of bread, also nice in a cold Yorkshire pudding with a bit of gravy if you're lucky enough that there's any left
I’d be happy to help with your leftovers as I’ve never had a leftover duck sarnie!!
Leftover Turkey
Cranberry Sauce
Stuffing
A nice swiss or gruyere cheese
A bit of mustard to cut through the sweet and salty, preferably djion
