Every single school should have a library & a librarian, to help every single child find the books that will make them readers, and give them all the lifelong benefits of literacy. Libraries & librarians change children's lives FOREVER!

In a word
Sadly
💔
Libraries are ever so more important now that teachers are instructing kids on everything today except reading it seems.
That's like the intellectual capital of Texas.
I used to fly down from Dallas just to crash Barbara Jordan's lectures at the university.
But many families cannot provide all the "taster menu"; the variety of experience at home. But schools, libraries, sports clubs, parks etc could if properly resourced by local champions and funding. Local & Central Gov long term plans ?
Jiving to Ave Maria may have resulted in a Hail Mary pass to power; but it promises the antithesis of servant leadership.
football > education
If libraries and librarians were considered priorities, funding would be found. If education was considered a priority, school personnel would be paid in line with other professions that require similar education.
Budgets reflect values. We just don't value those things.
And: Children/young people can't vote
So politicians& leaders can have luxurious offices while teachers & all school staff struggle to provide for the nation's hope; crammed into classrooms with limited budgets for resourcing (eg) sports, arts, therapeutic etc
Funding reveals our TRUE values.
we need to spend more anyway
But children& young people should not be a charity? 😥
You know the way they say green energy is the future blabla..
Children/YP literally ARE the future!
But government funding shows its REAL priorities...
When are we going to prioritise Children/YP's needs?
By prioritise I mean central/local funds.
Many governments are short term.So they talk about ideals; but buy weapons.
(YOU are a star "RDF🦆"🙌🙏)
Never underestimate the value of a librarian.
SHOULD.
...for the better, you should add.
Instead of having an overworked teacher randomly deal out picture books to each kid, a librarian gets to know you.
When they say "I think you'd like this book," they had time to choose. Their words are personalized.
A librarian is a trustworthy friend.
Once a week, the bookmobile came down the road.
I checked out books by the armload.
The driver-librarian introduced me to Doctor Doolittle & my life was forever changed.
Sadly, the bookmobile was retired.
We need bookmobiles again.
📚❤️🚍
They're so important.
But I do love teaching them how to use the library, when they find out that yes, we DO have books on that topic you mentioned and here's how to pick out the ones you want to read!
Those faces light up and they are entralled.
Why I work so hard to have the best library for kids and people in my community, hand out books at every event I possibly can, and this year I will finalize my Library Faery costume and start hitting the school regularly with good stories and books to read.
Jack move I know, but it worked
(My kids are now grown & great!)
There's many a person out there now you opened doors for & provided permanent refuge from the cuts of life.
Kudos.
I agree with you. I'm tired of parents not being responsible.
It's not just literacy that's at stake but also the experience of finding someone who understands one's particular needs
