Part of the reason Dalton is so good in that is because he's a counterweight to Blessed! He doesn't underplay, exactly, but he provides a cooler, tighter kind of performance. Errol Flynn as a '70s Eurotrash jet-setter.

I have a theory that this is a trap that every Bond iteration has a danger of falling into. They all start out as relistic and gritty spy thrillers, and then progress into Seagull Doing A Double Take territory the longer they go on before the next Bond iteration starts.

I noticed the same myself! I appreciate GoldenEye even more as an adult, looking at the context of it being a gutsy post-Cold War Bond film. It was the N64 game that introduced little me to the franchise (which i still love, especially with mods).
