Oh, Mikey's character was a sullen, angry teen. My mother would never let me get away with what she said and did. Better Things is FABulous! Pamela Adlon is genius!
This was the exact conversation I had with my SO who knew nothing of either. I mentioned it seems like a true TS ending (SEE! That's what the movie was about!), while also mentioning I loved Mikey in BT. But it did have a surreal feeling to it for The Substance. He's seen none of any of them.
Except that Fernanda was better than both. But yeah, it's true. It's always a so so young actress undeservely winning these things. But it says lots about these awards and US as a country.
My point of US voters going for young actresses and overlooking better performances wasn't about the Substance. It was more about a pathetic country and how constantly makes wrong choices and awards mostly US white people. A weak stand in a political standpoint as well. Well, cannot expect greatness
It is when male best actors almost never go to men in their 20s & 30s and go almost exclusively to women in their 20s & 30s. Context matters. Do you think young women winning now will be happy when they're passed up for wins in their 40s and 50s? Is that not exactly what The Substance tackles?
Sex sells.
I watched both digital screeners last night, and there's no way Anora's screenplay was more original than Substance. With that, Demi did some outstanding acting totally naked. Did she lose because she didn't F a dozen xs on screen. 🙄
It's a "slice if life" flick, like his other film, The Florida Project. One was the life of a sex worker, the other about life in the projects. Meh. Good movies, but not creative enough for my vote.
Confirmation of male power - no rewards/awards for women who aren’t in their control… sex worker with grit is still controlled by men… economy male dependent. Demi, in some ways, took the hit for those pissed Taylor and Beyoncé are beyond their control, economic and otherwise.
Anora was… I don’t know. It’s another film where there are these amazing performances in a story that feels like an excuse for tits. I honestly have no idea what it was trying to say.
A white straight man writing about a sex worker where in the end a white straight man tries to save her. The first quarter was like a porno and the rest was yelling and “funny” violence directed at the woman.
Not trying to be harsh, but I think that viewpoint might be a little sexist. I got the impression the movie was trying to make the point that the white straight man needed saving as much as she did.
I get the impression that it was mostly improvised. Or that the actors didn’t have much to work with. And in that sense they did a great job. But thematically it didn’t interest me.
It felt like the millennials and Gen Z just discovered cocaine and strippers.
But to paraphrase Idiocracy:
“we used to make movies with stories. Movies with stories that made you care about whose boobs it was and why they are jingling. And I believe that time can come again!”
Oscar wins are not a validation that a film, or performance is good. Frankly it means you go an award. Big whoop. So many best pictures are at best mediocrities. Some many acting awards are in the end , forgettable. The value stands the test of time, which many of these “bests” do not.
Men prefer women to be sex workers rather than strong independent women. The Substance has men who are misogynists, and women who make their own choices. Anora also has misogynists, but the women in it have no choices. See the difference?
I feel like this narrative ignores that the Oscars are historically pretty prejudiced against young actors in breakthrough roles. Which means for years the Oscars have been staggered as they constantly try to give condolence awards to the person they didn't vote for 20 years ago.
I thought Mikey deserved the award but the oscars have not really been prejudice against young actresses winning, Young Actors they for sure are for some strange reason.
I didn't realize this until Madison won but lol you're right; of all categories best actress is the one that awards younger actors the most. since 2010 tho no actress has won for their breakthrough role. JLaw and Larson both had awards buzz breakthroughs (winters bone, short term 12) the year prior.
Agreed. I am just fascinated that for all the “barriers” oscar has had 1 of the last to fall is giving young actors, best actor. seemed like Butler/Chalamet where about to pull it off, fell short. obviously compared to the historically racist barriers that are much worse its hard to feel bad for them.
The Oscars do not attempt justice. No one "deserves" the award. People in the trade vote. Someone wins. Equally valid views of any performance-"great" and "awful."
I really was hoping for Demi Moore to win. Kind of as a lifetime achievement. Although I thought she was good, Mikey Madison has many more years left in her career.
Demi's, & the others, loss was unbelievable! & sorry Mikey, that wasn't much of a performance at all. i mean f*c¥iπg your way for 120 minutes then screaming & kicking for the last 30 minutes didn't prove you could act. Academy voters, however, evidently wanted to f§c€u¢ something.
Yeah…it’s meta when the art kinda plays with real life right…what’s it called when life kinda plays with the art? Also meta? Cuz whatever it’s called that’s what that was.
I really liked Anora. It had quite the journey but essentially is a love story. The Substance was so difficult to watch. Demi gave that role EVERYTHING and without her would have been nothing.
Anora is a disgusting movie no matter how I Look at it . I’m not a prude my any means but the filthy language from start to finish , screaming beyond reality and sex ever 5 minutes . This movie should never been nominated much less win Best Movie and 25 yr old Mikey getting best actor over Demi.
And also demi is a giant hypocrite doing this film about how you shouldn't augment yourself or try to make yourself younger and that actor is 95% PLASTIC. Screw all that mess
If you're so fucking butthurt by some curse words I suggest you limit yourself to children's shows and movies. Don't try to watch our grownup stuff ... It's too hard for your poor 1950s sensibilities to handle. Touch grass
Demi is a plastic Barbie hypocrite. Running around blathering about how you should age naturally when she's been sucked and tucked and her whole face and boobs are plastic. She died as a feminist hero about 5 years after GI jane
Unfortunately, while it may be degrading as you say...it's real life for some. We can't continually sanitize things because we find them offensive...sometimes, people need to see the cold, hard truth. ☹️
The Academy loves a 20-something Best Actress nominee the way it loves a 40- or 50-something Best Actor nominee. 32 Best Female Actor awards went to performers in their twenties. Only 1 Best Actor went to a man in his 20s (ironically, it was Adrian Brody, who won against this year in his 50s).
Mikey learned to dance and did it well. She worked her ass off in that role and deserved it. Don’t get me wrong, I loved Demi and the Substance. I was very torn about who I wanted to win.
I haven't been watching movies for years, but I still see the names of them on various media no matter what. I have never even seen the word "Anora" before though. Ever. If I was doing Final Jeopardy and the category was "Anora", I would confirm to the audience that I was a dunce.
Anora is a movie like all Netflix romantics, a "classic" that Netflix can make every year with different actors. The Substance and I'm Still Here are films that are critical of the society of cases that pretend not to exist.
I said in the sense of the movie that he's a rich man who falls in love with a poor woman and his parents don't like it. Netflix has several similar movies.
It wasn’t a romance. I thought it’d win Best Picture but definitely not Best Actress. I had my bets on Fernanda Torres. Completely shocked it went to Mikey, though I loved Anora.
I agree that Best Actress shouldn’t have gone to Anora. I disagree with your other comment. It certainly was worthy of Best Picture. After watching all the Best Picture nominees, I 100% think Anora was the best of the bunch.
Haven’t seen any of the Best Picture nominees. The only ones I want to see after the awards are The Brutalist, I’m Still Here, and the Conclave. Maybe The Substance.
The only issue I had with The Brutalist was the long extended architectural shots (made the movie 4 hours long) and there were some things that were alluded to that I was like why not show it. The Substance lost me at the end. Conclave and I’m Still Here 👏👏
I didn’t love Anora. I felt like I just watch an extended Jerry Springer show with backstory. And it was pretty much X rated. I’m surprised the academy acknowledged it.
Mikey was a spitfire and it felt real not like she was acting so she deserved the nomination. Surprised she won though.
Perfect. I was all in for Demi, as it was the best meta critique of internalized self hatred brought on by social conditioning and at peak effect in Hollywood. The young, hot and greedy steals the life force from the old and washed up, forgetting they are one.
Anora is an independent film, made on a measley $6,000,000 budget, no major film stars & shot on location in not so glamorous, Brighton Beach. That's a hell of an achievement in Hollywood these days and I'm totally here for it. Mikey Madison is something else.
When you don't have a major studio and production co. and their $$$$ behind you that's to be expected. There's no advertising budget. Box office $$ don't dictate Academy votes. If that was the case the Fast & Furious franchise & all the super hero crap would be winning Oscar's.
♦️Everybody they are pushing for an audit of the paper votes yay! They're asking for your help please listen and share. If you can't listen you can read the pics for what to do. This is the best news!! 💜
Watched this movie because of Demi thinking she would win. It is hilariously awful. Mikey’s movie deserved it. It’s wild and fast paced all on a low budget. Independent film.
Saw both movies and IMO Mikey deserved the win. As good as Demi was, the role of Anora required grit, fearlessness, vulnerability, emotional depth and humor — and Mikey crushed it, all without prosthetic makeup.
I know, David. ✌🏻 I had a “Bridget Jones” nickname at one time; the first movie- ahem, sputter, years ago. Lol.
That’s why the emoji I used. I embrace it, however, admit holy sh*t, I’m getting old ! Renee looked older but great in the 4th and final Bridget turn. Also, her acting range in general- 🤌🏻.
That wasn't what I was commenting on... Of course older women win, it's just hard to believe so much time has passed that Renee is now in that category. 😜
At the same time, Brody was the youngest ever winner of Best Actor, he wins again 20+ years later, and he reflects on what he needs to do to stick around another 20 years... maybe this isn't it?
It's not about the actors age, it's not about supporting sex workers, both movies had great moments, sories & acting...
But Demi Moore was robbed - she acted her ass off!
After years of watching Jeopardy! in remembrance of my departed parents I am considering stopping.
The amount of russian clues, daily trying to normalize these genocidal maniacs when a daily category of russian war crimes and crimes against humanity is possible.
You are all bending the knee.
Anora? Really? 40 minutes of repeat stuff followed by a completely boring middle part. Only redeemed in the last two minutes. Mikey Madison was good but so would a lot of other actresses in the same part. Didn't see Substance.
Thank you! I really did not enjoy Anora. The characters were all selfish and annoying and the last 30 minutes could have been 10. Also, hot take: Mikey was just copying Marisa Tomei from My Cousin Vinny and was not original.
Films "hit" people differently. Also it's the Hollywood academy voting, so there's that. I haven't seen either film yet but I'm a big Demi and Mikey fan and will probably enjoy both.
I’m only here for the Omnibus people. These are my people.
If there are some stupid twitter 2017 jokes about Ken in here, then way to scratch and sniff. The gum is still tacky underneath the seat, I guess.
Yes. It was certainly disappointing. I liked Mikey and the film was very good, but I thought Demi was very easily head and shoulders above the others in this case
Ok, but The Substance had a third act on par with an 80s B horror film. I felt like I was watching The Toxic Avenger. It's like they spent 90% of their budget on close up shots of naked women in an expensive apartment, and couldn't afford any special effects.
So what are you talking about?
Anyway I loved it and it was really relevant.
Plus the whole over the top Carrie scene was great and fun.
Carrie also addressed when girls are othered by peers so it actually fit with the theme.
Oh, well I didn’t understand your point before.
It was supposed to be a little different- as it was then from ellasue ‘s POV -which couldn’t be as natural, as she was a Frankenstein- which reveals the horror of misogyny, ageism and fake Hollywood standards & its effect on our whole self.
I love Mikey’s performance, it’s star making, but in all honestly the best actress of a certain age was Fernanda Torres in I’m Still Here. No contest. I thought Demi was good in the Substance but tbh she wasn’t in my top slots

Shut up Ken Jennings.
Also, did you notice...?
Fernanda Torres really had the best performance
Get a grip.
She was wonderful and deserved it
Go back to Twitter, seriously
and then you proceed to be a total prude
Yeah. This bias toward the carnal came to mind immediately. :-(
As did the words “double snub”…
Mikey was a spitfire and it felt real not like she was acting so she deserved the nomination. Surprised she won though.
Ouch.
Gone with the wind did ten times more without adjusting.

That’s suppression
With that said, I didn’t see the winner’s performance. I don’t want to insinuate it wasn’t deserved. I have no idea.
You’re right. That comment didn’t make sense to me. Agism was never the issue.
That’s why the emoji I used. I embrace it, however, admit holy sh*t, I’m getting old ! Renee looked older but great in the 4th and final Bridget turn. Also, her acting range in general- 🤌🏻.
Years ago. Yes older women win
But Demi Moore was robbed - she acted her ass off!
Make it a Daily Double, could you please?
Damn shame that Demi didn't get the Oscar. She's put in WORK these last 40 years.
Sorry
It's happening:
Has she, though? For 40 years?
And the work here in The Substance was brilliant, stunning, deeply layered, incredibly relevant & expertly crafted.
But we can also get into the “body of work” comment bc they’re the Oscars and DOZENS of times over the years they’ve been given for a body of work
👍🏼
that was not the dinosaur days.
Demi should’ve won.

Real filmmaking doesn’t need special effects

Which is more of a compliment on acting skills
