Sincerely delighted to discover, 45 minutes into this nearly-wordless three-hour documentary about French monks who take vows of silence, that among the reasons they *can* talk is "to make sure the monastery cats know when it's mealtime by making little kitty-calling noises at them."

Kindness. Also good luck on the job!
Today was looking at it when I was getting the stuff to start my seeds, which somehow feels more exciting & satisfying than what I used to do Saturdays at work.

Fuck god.
"And with your spirit."
It was known as their 'Sow of Violence'.
My cats remind me that dinner was due 45 seconds ago. 😆
I hope they take me. I have salve-making skills & I've been baptized.

Sorry. Now I've embarrassed myself.
Have you seen the 2016 doc Kedi, about the cats of Istanbul?
"The cat did nothing at dinnertime."
"That was the strange behavior."
I could understand the vows to reflection, to spend time without distractions, but silence?
There is nothing wrong with taking time to be silent and reflect.
It is entirely different from taking a vow of silence.
I spent a memorable half hour of a religious cultures medieval history class translating a medieval monastic sign language manual and learning the signs with a prof who was clearly having a blast helping us muddle along.
And the road is the one they take. It's theirs. No use being judgmental about it.
And even before that you didn't become a monk overnight.
A couple days later it came out he'd left Alice to the care of the brothers because she'd been with him every day working at the monastery & many of the brothers ...2/3
I heard a couple years ago that Abbott passed away - & I guarantee you he didn't end up where he was expecting (& hopefully the same for every one of the brothers who didn't fight him for Alice.
She ended her days with a wonderful human, but didn't last av. lifespan. Stress.
I also hearily recommend Frank Bianco's wonderful book "Voices Of Silence" about Trappists in the USA
